Verse 66:1-2

Salam,
can someone explain what the prophet made unlawful? What is the law regarding the cancellation of oaths (marriage?)?
660 In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful.
661 O prophet, why do you make unlawful what God has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? God is Forgiver, Merciful.
662 God has already given the law, regarding the cancellation of oaths. And God is your Lord, and He is the Knowledgeable, the Wise.Thank you

Could there be referred to the Torah by "already given the law"?

I think it's a law in Quran, but I don't know what exactly.
Cancellation of oaths=divorce?
Did Muhammed make unlawful divorce? How is that to please a wife?

The verse does not say Ya Mohammed, but Ya Ayyuha Annabiyyu
But Muhammed is the prophet

Peace all,
But Muhammed is the prophet
The point is, "Muhammad" is not specifically mentioned. If you look through some threads on Muhammad here, there's always debates going on if he existed or if he is the one mentioned in the Qur'an.

http//quransmessage.com/forum/index.php?topic=655.0Supposedly the whole "prohibition" of honey (as mentioned in the original post of the first link I shared) may come from hadith
There is another tafsir , that the prophet were used to eat honey when he is with his wife Zainab , so Aish and Hafsa plotted to tell him he doesn't smell good from eating it so he said I'll never eat honey again and told her not to tell anyone !!!
This story written in hadith books with very different version ,One time it is Hafsa who said it another time it is Aisha .The story through hadith in Bukhari is like that the prophet stayed with Hafsa for unusually longer time that made Aisha ask why ,they told her that he is eating honey which was given as a gift from one woman to Hafsa ( eating honey takes long time !!) so that made Aisha jealous and he asked the other wives to tell the prophet that she doesn't smell good but where is the secret her I don't know and this hadith is in both Muslim and Bukhari !!

The Arabic azwajika in 661 and azwajihi in 663, can mean, mates or companions from what Ive read. And a female can be a friend or mate, not just a wife. And if these words do mean wives, still no where is sex mentioned in the context of either ayya. nope

In verse 663 we are told that God made some information known to the prophet about his wives. The question is, how did God make this information known to the Prophet? Certainly not via the Quran since there is no mention of it anywhere in the Quran. The Prophet must have received personal inspiration from God which is not part of the Quran. If we follow the Quran alone we would not know about this information.
First Here we must clarify the difference between Revelation and Inspiration. A revelation is a scripture which God gives a prophet to deliver to the people. Moses received a revelation from God (Torah), Jesus received a revelation from God (Injeel) and Muhammad received a revelation from God (Quran).
However, an inspiration is not a scripture, it is simply a personal piece of information which God inspires to a single person, and for the benefit of that person alone.
In addition, God inspires all people and not only the messengers. For example, we read in the Quran how God inspired the mother of Moses (who was not a messenger) to throw her baby in the river (287).
God in fact inspires all creatures and not just humans. In 1668 we read how God inspired the bee.Second The information Muhammad received about some of his wives (663) was an inspiration and not a revelation. This information was exclusive to Muhammad and for his benefit alone. It is totally irrelevant for us to know about this information in order to practice Islam.
This information, if contained in the Hadith, with many question marks of its credibility, may be of interest to historians but is not in any way a requirement for the practice of Islam.
So once again, this claim does not justify in any way the need for hadith to practice Islam.Third The main message of sura 66 and in particular 661 is that God is reminding all readers of the Quran, till the end of time, that the authority of law making is exclusive to God. When Muhammad made the error of prohibiting something which was made lawful by God, God immediately reprimanded him
O you prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? God is Forgiver, Merciful.
The information God gave Muhammad about some of his wives (663) was exclusive to Muhammad and has no bearing whatsoever on what is required to practice Islam.

Salam,
The verses 660-3 is about Muhammed making something unlawful while God has made it lawful. The law is regarding the cancellation of oaths.
What I didn't understand is; what exactly did Muhammed make unlawful regarding cancellation of oaths? And he did it to please his wives.
Also, Muhammed is the last prophet, Quran is the last Book from God.
3144 And Mohammed is but a messenger, like many messengers who have passed before him. If he dies or is killed will you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels, he will not harm God in the least. And God will recompense the thankful.
3340 Mohammed is not the father of any of your men, but he is the messenger of God and the seal of the prophets. And God is fully aware of all things.
472 And those who believe and do good works, and believe in what was sent down to Mohammed, for it is the truth from their Lord, He cancels for them their sins, and relieves their concern.
4829 Mohammed is the messenger of God, and those who are with him are severe against the rejecters, but merciful between themselves. You see them kneeling and prostrating, they seek the blessings and approval of God. Their distinction is in their faces, as a result of prostrating. Such is their example in the Torah. And their example in the Gospel is like a plant which shoots out and becomes strong and thick and it stands straight on its trunk, pleasing to the farmers. That He may enrage the rejecters with them. God promises those among them who believe and do good works a forgiveness and a great reward.I don't understand how this topic about Muhammed and prophet came up ;D

Ok so there is this verse about the cancellation of oaths
589 God will not hold you for your casual oaths, but He will hold you for what oaths you have made binding; its cancellation shall be the feeding of ten poor from the average of what you feed your family, or that you clothe them, or that you free a slave; whoever cannot find such shall fast for three days; this is a cancellation for making your oaths when you swear. And be careful from making oaths. It is such that God clarifies for you His revelations that you may be thankful.
I still don't understand what Muhammed made unlawful.

Okay, I realize my last post wasn't that helpful.
Holding to our oaths is important. This is stressed so many times in the Qur'an. We shouldn't break or cancel them. Oaths are a serious matter. They don't just refer to marriages; they can also refer to peace treaties (see chapter 9). The oaths spoken about in these verses seem very general.
IMO, the verses in question are simply saying that
(1) The prophet is fallible (661)
(2) Only God can make the law (661)
(3) God already gave the law (662 - whatever it is, is irrelevant... we may never know as per 37)
(4) The prophet tried to go against that law (661)You can consider 663-4 as well. Not saying that they're connected, but the messages in each section may be similar -
661-2 explains through a short narrative that God is the only one who can make the law, and that one shouldn't cancel oaths because per 589 (thank you for providing that verse), God already addresses the topic. Oaths are serious and its consequences for breaking one are serious as well. 663-4 explains through another short narrative that honesty is important. No one should simply spread information when the person (who originally told you the information) has trusted you with keeping it confidential. So these 4 verses combined teach about how one can better their character.
At the end of 661 - "God is Forgiver, Merciful" - the prophet is reminded that even though he went against God, he can still be forgiven. In 664 "If the two of you repent to God, then your hearts have listened" - the wives are reminded that even though they were dishonest and gossiped, they can also still be forgiven.

Thank you, I got it. I didn't realize it wasn't about what the prophet made unlawful. D
