"Whenever your experience good, it is from God...
-
and whenever you experience the opposite of that, it is from yourself."
...what exactly does this mean? (can't remember verse number)
E.g. if my house burned down, it is my fault?
Peace.
Good question, I think to grasp this is almost like trying to grasp God is running everything, but you can choose to do his will or go astray. So for me it's hard to answer, but since you asked and since it's this is something that I continue to ponder I'll give you what I understand so far.
Before I can come to a conclusion if something is from God or a result of my choices, I will immediated thank God regardless but 'wait and see' or what and see how things pan out before reflecting on if it's a result of a poor choice.
For example my house burns down. It must have been some past evil I have done! But hen two weeks later the insurance company say we will start building your new house, pick your design! (This actually happened to my brother's next door neighbor, his house burning down might have been a blessing as his wife just recently died before and he is able to start a the rest of his life in a new house)
So yeah, because clouds can have s ilver lining (bad things can be blessings in disguise) I think this is a question that I'll always ponder myself, which is from God and which is my fault? REgardless I thank God if it is from and and thank God that he can give me knowledge if it is my fault and wants me to know it!
I hope this isn't confusing lol -

Everything good that happens to you (O Man) is from God, everything bad that happens to you is from your own actions". (Quran 479). Metora

Salaam,
this verse i talking about guidance, not natural events, What guidance is good is from Allah, what guidance is bad is from man, as the Qur'an is a complete guide, in every detail.
All events are the result of the system manifest through Allah good or bad.

Too many people have the opposite view, that if something bad happens God is punishing them, but if something good happens, they did it themselves. Poor misguided people

This makes sense. Thanks for that explanation... handshake

Thats also proves that hadhith should not be followed.

Thanks, that does make perfect sense in context, it isn't about experience of life on Earth, but a spiritual understanding, and guidance to the right path must come from God, and of going astray from choosing to follow wrong desires rather than resisting.

The statement of Grand Qur'aan is ONLY that which is conveyed by its words and not that which one wishes to perceive assigning meanings of his own choice to the words carrying altogether different meanings.

I hope this will clarify.

Sarah, he posted verse references.
It is also actions 817. When we do good deeds we submit to the energy of God prevalent in all of us.
Meteora is referring to 479, which says that anything that befalls you is from your soul. Keep in mind our soul also whispers to us (5016).Peace

true, but I am not sure what the highlighted parts within each verse refer to
I do intend to learn Arabic in future, but at the moment, my understanding of Arabic is effectively absent.

It says that whatever bad happens it is because of the acts which we have sent forward. Once an action is done, it is bound to yield a result, sooner or later. That is why somewhere else it is said that every person is a "prisoner of his deeds". Reference of the Verse are quoted, one can see in any translation, many many are available on line.

The "it is about guidance" argument has no basis.
Edip Yuksel's footnote of this verse
Everything is under God's control (478; 817) and bad things happen to us because of our wrong choices (4230; 6411). For instance, one may harm himself by putting his hand in the fire, and the harm is invited by his action. However, since the fire operates and burns according to God's law, it is from God. It is noteworthy that the word indi (side) in verse 478, which indicates intervening causes, does not exist in verse 479. In the former the indirectness of the relationship and, in the latter, the directness of the relationship is implied. Also, see 5722-23.

Why is everyone magically incapable of reading that verse properly?
478
Wherever you may be, death will overtake you - even though you be in towers raised high. "Yet, when a good thing happens to them, some say, "This is from God," whereas when evil befalls them, they say, "This is from thee !? Say "All is from God." What, then, is amiss with these people that they are in no wise near to grasping the truth of what they are told?Did you see that? "When a good thing happens to them they say it is from God, when evil happens to them they say it from yourselves" and we are to say ALL IS FROM GOD! ALL IS FROM GOD! ALL IS FROM GOD!
Not clear enough? Lets say it three more times, together now, ALL IS FROM GOD! ALL IS FROM GOD! ALL IS FROM GOD!
"What then is AMISS WITH THESE PEOPLE that they are IN NO WISE NEAR TO GRASPING THE TRUTH OF WHAT THEY ARE TOLD"
When they say "what good is from God, what evil is from yourself"
it didn't just contradict itself in the next line, it is saying clearly that All is from God, that the people are wrong who say otherwise, then repeated the thing they tend to say.
The Qur'an has elsewhere repeated ALL IS FROM GOD, the Good and the Evil, and the Bible even says the same too.
Still not clear? Then maybe Islam isn't for you!
Haha, and I'm not trying to be mean to you!
