    Selam

    I always thought that the word juma'a mentioned in 629 in the Quran always stood to mean friday. However, it seems that there are other meanings.

    Khalifa
    O you who believe, when the Congregational Prayer (Salat Al-Jumu`ah) is announced on Friday, you shall hasten to the commemoration of GOD, and drop all business. This is better for you, if you only knew.

    Yusuf Ali
    O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of God, and leave off business (and traffic) That is best for you if ye but knew!

    Pickthal
    O ye who believe! When the call is heard for the prayer of the day of congregation, haste unto remembrance of Allah and leave your trading. That is better for you if ye did but know.

    The Message
    629 O you who believe, if the bond is called to on the day of assembly, then you shall hasten towards the remembrance of God, and cease all selling. This is better for you, if only you knew.

    Can someone help here to what the actual meaning is e.g. day of congregation, friday, day of gathering, day of assembly... Also if someone could explain what the verse 629 is asking us to do and when to do it. Historical evidence of why muslims adopted friday for this prayer will also help. Thanks in advance.

    Peace

    Hope

      Jiim-Miim-Ayn

      My understanding is similar to this

      All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

        Salam..

        i remember something about this, isn't the name of days in arabic week are based on numbers,such as follows (correct me if i'm wrong)

        1 = ahad = sunday
        2 = isnaini = monday
        3 = thalasa = tuesday
        4 = arba'a = wednesday
        5 = khamis = thursday
        6 = sittah = friday
        7 = saba'ah or sabtu = saturday

        now i begins to wonder why the names of other days of the week are "numbers-based" EXCEPT for the sixth day only, could this be an attempt to justify the "salatul jumuah" theory? just a thought..

            Good point. I noticd that also. However sabt and sitta(six in arabic) do not go together like the others. So saturday also has exeptions. Anyways its no big deal. Most of these rituals are congregation rituals made in public together. These rituals are like haj, friday prayers, prayers for the dead, tawaaf and so on. However individual daily prayers does not have to be ritualistic. But these congregation are practical way to do collective worship. However it should not be made OBLIGATORY and it should not be Islamic. Its simply a form of collective worshiping as Arab societies are collective societies and these congregation do serve important cultural and communal bonds. But there are but a form of worhip. Islam does not mean a coified ritual. Its why we worship and to whom that is Islam and not just how.

            The problem is that some people can not accept these rituals for ideological reason like Ka'ba being an idol or so on. However other than that there is no reason from a Quranic point of view to oppose these rituals. But there is no evidence that these rituals are an obligatio on mankind as they are or that other forms of rituals would not be accepted. This is tribalism and not Islam.

            We know from the Ot that many houses were built for worship and many prophets prayed with congregations, such as Solomon. We also know that many places in the world have rituals whether monotheist or polytheist. The rituals look the same. However the difference comes in who we worship and why.

            22.18. Seest thou not that to Allah bow down in worship all things that are in the heavens and on earth,- the sun, the moon, the stars; the hills, the trees, the animals; and a great number among mankind? But a great number are (also) such as are fit for Punishment and such as Allah shall disgrace,- None can raise to honour for Allah carries out all that He wills.

            22.34. To every people did We appoint rites , that they might celebrate the name of Allah over the sustenance He gave them from animals (fit for food). But your Allah is One Allah. submit then your wills to Him (in Islam) and give thou the good news to those who humble themselves,-

              maybe it had something to do with the sabbath rest, that Allah rested on the 7th day...and to correct it by revealing that Allah does not need to rest so He commands Muslims for Jumuah on the same day with the jewish sabbath day..just a thought
