Killing of apostates in the Hadhith.
-
well, I know about 2256 Can this rule in the hadhith be a contradiction? I want to see quranic evidence.
1682 But if they turn away from you, your only duty is a clear delivery of the Message .
6107 Yet if God had so willed, they would not have ascribed Divinity to aught besides Him; hence, We have not made you their keeper, nor are you a guardian over them.
479-80 Say'Whatever good betides you is from God and whatever evil betides you is from your own self and that We have sent you to mankind only as a messenger and all sufficing is God as witness. Whoso obeys the Messenger, he indeed obeys God. And for those who turn away, We have not sent you as a keeper."
1128 He (Noah) said "O my people! think over it! If I act upon a clear direction from my Lord who has bestowed on me from Himself the Merciful talent of seeing the right way, a way which you cannot see for yourself, does it follow that we can force you to take the right path when you definitely decline to take it?
1753-54 And tell my servants that they should speak in a most kindly manner. Verily, Satan is always ready to stir up discord between men; for verily; Satan is mans foe .... Hence, We have not sent you with power to determine their Faith.
21107-109 (O Prophet?) 'We have not sent you except to be a mercy to all mankind" Declare, "Verily, what is revealed to me is this, your God is the only One God, so is it not up to you to bow down to Him?' But if they turn away then say, "I have delivered the Truth in a manner clear to one and all, and I know not whether the promised hour is near or far."
2267 To every people have We appointed ceremonial rites which they observe; therefore, let them not wrangle over this matter with you, but bid them to turn to your Lord. You indeed are rightly guided. But if they still dispute you in this matter, `God best knows what you do."
24.54. Say "Obey God, and obey the Messenger. but if ye turn away, he is only responsible for the duty placed on him and ye for that placed on you. If ye obey him, ye shall be on right guidance. The Messenger's duty is only to preach the clear (Message).
8821 22; And so, exhort them your task is only to exhort; you cannot compel them to believe.
4828 He it is Who has sent forth His Messenger with the Guidance and the Religion of Truth, to the end that tie make it prevail over every religion, and none can bear witness to the Truth as God does.
3616 17 (Three Messengers to their people) Said, "Our Sustainer knows that we have indeed been sent unto you, but we are not bound to more than clearly deliver the Message entrusted to us.'
3941 Assuredly, We have sent down the Book to you in right form for the good of man. Whoso guided himself by it does so to his own advantage, and whoso turns away from it does so at his own loss. You certainly are not their keeper.
426 48 And whoso takes for patrons others besides God, over them does God keep a watch. Mark, you are not a keeper over them. But if they turn aside from you (do not get disheartened), for We have not sent you to be a keeper over them; your task is but to preach ....
6412 Obey God then and obey the Messenger, but if you turn away (no blame shall attach to our Messenger), for the duty of Our Messenger is just to deliver the message.
6725 26 And they ask, "When shall the promise be fulfilled if you speak the Truth?" Say, "The knowledge of it is verily with God alone, and verily I am but a plain warner."
10.99-100. If it had been thy Lord's will, they would all have believed,- all who are on earth! wilt thou then compel mankind, against their will, to believe! No soul can believe, except by the will of God, and He will place doubt (or obscurity) on those who will not understand
28.55-56 And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say "To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you we seek not the ignorant," It is true thou wilt not be able to guide whom thou lovest; but God guides those whom He will and He knows best those who receive guidance.
109.1-6 Say O ye that reject Faith,! I worship not that which ye worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship, And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship, To you be your Way, and to me mine.
74.11-17 Leave Me with whom I created alone!, To whom I granted resources in abundance, And sons to be by his side, To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable, Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!, Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!
"So have We appointed for every Prophet an enemy - devils of men and Jinns; who inspire each other with seductive, deceptive speech which leads astray; but had thy Lord willed they would not have done so. So leave them with what they do devise. And let the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter listen to it; and let them be well pleased with it; and let them gain what they can gain!" 6113-114
"And when you see those who meddle with Our revelations, withdraw from them until they meddle with another topic. And if the devil causes you to forget, sit not, after the remembrance, with the congregation of wrongdoers. 668
2256 There is no compulsion in religion, for the right way is clearly from the wrong way. Whoever therefore rejects the forces of evil and believes in God, he has taken hold of a support most unfailing, which shall never give way, for God is All Hearing and Knowing
In fact 2-256 is not the strongest verse regarding this issue as its stating a fact however many of the other verses is stating an order to give people their choice of believing or not believing.

This is the answer that I got from a sunni when I posted misconceptions about islam article on killing apostates.
"shortly.. That's b cos the Muslim ruler must give them a limited time for repent. yes . God will Guide them when they repent .
killing Apostates is not a forcing to believe , he has rights to reject in last second also if he don't believe. it's a Punishment. he has rights to flee to other country before Muslims know about it if he is brave.
first why he accepted Islam when he knows this is result , so he accepted death by him self when he embraced Islam with knowing all this. i don't think any one is going to accept a belief without knowing what is it."
What should I reply?
-
I would reply with "Thanks for your answer and providing evidence from The Quran..... oh wait, you didn't. Sorry, I should have made myself clearer, when I asked my question I meant I'd like actual evidence for any opposing views...... wait, is asking for evidence ok according to Islam?"
Some people are lost in ways of their own making.
-
I wrote a bit more logically - "Well maybe he wasn't sure about islam before he joined and after joining he found another faith. And he joined it. What happens to him if he is convicted of apostacy and does not repent or regret. Wouldn't apply here?"
Anyway I like your resoning better wakas. bravo

Many people are saying that I'm too young when I post on these groups.
-
well, I know about 2256 Can this rule in the hadhith be a contradiction? I want to see quranic evidence.
The hadith they rely on was based on a jew who converted to Islam and then reverted. This is not a Quranic principle since Judaism is a monotheist faith and so is Islam. The apostasy in the Quran is going back to paganism and not moving from one monotheist community to another. The Quran says
-
But why do they come to thee for decision, when they have the Torah before them?- therein is the (plain) command of Allah. yet even after that, they would turn away. For they are not (really) People of Faith.
-
It was We who revealed the law (to Moses) therein was guidance and light. By its standard have been judged the Jews, by the prophets who bowed (as in Islam) to Allah.s will, by the rabbis and the doctors of law for to them was entrusted the protection of Allah.s book, and they were witnesses thereto therefore fear not men, but fear me, and sell not my signs for a miserable price. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.
-
We ordained therein for them "Life for life, eye for eye, nose or nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if any one remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (No better than) wrong-doers.
-
And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him We sent him the Gospel therein was guidance and light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.
-
Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.
-
To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah. it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;
One religion but three communities. One left the Torah for the Talmud, the other brought a Trinitarian concept and left the Gospel, the theird adopted the Sunnah and marginalized the Quran.
The Torah and Gospel and Quran are one faith, but Judaism and Christianity and Islam has become three religions if you like.
If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but to test you in what He hath given you so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah.
So there is a Divine plan here.
I don't think apostasy is the right way to label someone moving from one community to another. But in the end its a question of how much each of these communities adheres to its scripture and how much they allow their own traditions to deviate themselves from it. Thats how I see it.
Anyways the Quran also says
"Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians -- whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. And there will be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve" (569).
Thats the criteria and not what kind of religious communities they are part of. many people who say there Muslims might not be real believers and many who say they are Christians might not be real believers in God. There is belief and disbelief in any religious community.
Finally the law of apostasy encourages hypocrisy which the Quran condemned and in some cases more than the pagans. Many Muslims might be non believers but fear makes them act as one or they are attracted to religion based on tradition rather than faith.

So, who's job is it to implement this law--execution of apostates?
On the authority of Ibn Mas??d Radi-Allahu 'anhu, who said The Messenger Sallallahu ?Alaihi Wa Sallam of All?h Subhanahu Wa Ta?ala, said"The blood of a man who is a Muslim is not lawful (i.e. cannot be lawfully shed), save if he belongs to one of three (classes) a married man who is an adulterer; life for a life (i.e. for murder); one who is a deserter of his religion, abandoning the community.?
Sah?h Al-Bukh?ri & Sah?h Muslim (TMH**)
Sahih InternationalThere shall be no compulsion in the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Sunnis can say this is about treason or some form of treachery to the community. Its this hadith that explains it
According to most scholars, if a Muslim consciously and without coercion declares their rejection of Islam and does not change their mind after the time given to him/her by a judge for research, then the penalty for male apostates is death, and for women, life imprisonment. However, this view has been rejected by a small minority of modern Muslim scholars (eg Hasan al-Turabi), who argues that the hadith in question should be taken to apply only to political betrayal of the Muslim community, rather than to apostasy in general. These scholars regard apostasy as a serious crime, but argue for the freedom to convert to and from Islam without legal penalty, and consider the aforementioned Hadith quote as insufficient justification for capital punishment. Today apostasy is punishable by death in the countries of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Iran, and is illegal in all other Muslim countries, though not subject to the death penalty. But in Turkey it is not illegal.
The hadith has been used both by supporters of the death penalty as well as critics of Islam. Some Islamic scholars point out it is important to understand the hadith in proper historical context. The order was at a time when the nascent Muslim community in Medina was fighting for its very life, and there were many schemes, by which the enemies of Islam would try to entice rebellion and discord within the community. Clearly any defection would have serious consequences for the Muslims, and the hadith may well be about treason, rather than just apostasy. It must also be pointed out that under the terms of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, any Muslim who returned to Mecca was not to be returned, terms which the Prophet accepted. Despite this historical point, Islamic law as currently practiced does not allow the freedom to choose one's religion.
also
Heffening holds that contrary to the Qur'an, "in traditions, there is little echo of these punishments in the next world? and instead, we have in many traditions a new element, the death penalty." Examples of such passages include 98317, 452260, 98457, 98458, 989271, etc.
Wael Hallaq states the death penalty was a new element added later and "reflects a later reality and does not stand in accord with the deeds of the Prophet." Montazeri believes that it is probable that the punishment was prescribed by Muhammad during early Islam - due to political conspiracies against Islam and Muslims, and not only because of changing the belief or expressing it. Montazeri defines different types of apostasy. He does not hold that a reversion of belief because of investigation and research is punishable by death, but prescribes capital punishment for a desertion of Islam out of malice and enmity towards the Muslim community.
wikipedia
Volume 9, Book 84, Number 58
Narrated Abu BurdaAbu Musa said, "I came to the Prophet along with two men (from the tribe) of Ash'ariyin, one on my right and the other on my left, while Allah's Apostle was brushing his teeth (with a Siwak), and both men asked him for some employment. The Prophet said, 'O Abu Musa (O 'Abdullah bin Qais!).' I said, 'By Him Who sent you with the Truth, these two men did not tell me what was in their hearts and I did not feel (realize) that they were seeking employment.' As if I were looking now at his Siwak being drawn to a corner under his lips, and he said, 'We never (or, we do not) appoint for our affairs anyone who seeks to be employed. But O Abu Musa! (or 'Abdullah bin Qais!) Go to Yemen.'" The Prophet then sent Mu'adh bin Jabal after him and when Mu'adh reached him, he spread out a cushion for him and requested him to get down (and sit on the cushion). Behold There was a fettered man beside Abu Muisa. Mu'adh asked, "Who is this (man)?" Abu Muisa said, "He was a Jew and became a Muslim and then reverted back to Judaism." Then Abu Muisa requested Mu'adh to sit down but Mu'adh said, "I will not sit down till he has been killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Apostle (for such cases) and repeated it thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered that the man be killed, and he was killed. Abu Musa added, "Then we discussed the night prayers and one of us said, 'I pray and sleep, and I hope that Allah will reward me for my sleep as well as for my prayers.'"
This is the hadith of apostasy but of course some Sunnis will say that Ibn Abbas did not say he heard himself the prophet say that. These are the Sunnis who are trying to find a way out of this apostasy with the Bin Ladens accusing them of polishing Islam. They are stuck you see.
Volume 9, Book 84, Number 59
Narrated Abu HurairaWhen the Prophet died and Abu Bakr became his successor and some of the Arabs reverted to disbelief, 'Umar said, "O Abu Bakr! How can you fight these people although Allah's Apostle said, 'I have been ordered to fight the people till they say 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, 'and whoever said, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah', Allah will save his property and his life from me, unless (he does something for which he receives legal punishment) justly, and his account will be with Allah?' "Abu Bakr said, "By Allah! I will fight whoever differentiates between prayers and Zakat as Zakat is the right to be taken from property (according to Allah's Orders). By Allah! If they refused to pay me even a kid they used to pay to Allah's Apostle, I would fight with them for withholding it." 'Umar said, "By Allah It was nothing, but I noticed that Allah opened Abu Bakr's chest towards the decision to fight, therefore I realized that his decision was right."
They are stuck again.

I took this from misconceptions about islam and posted it in a facebook group!
"Some think that once you are a "muslim" if you decide to change your beliefs you are considered an apostate, an act punishable by death!
The Quran clearly states there are those who believe then disbelieve, then believe again, then disbelieve again. This proves death for apostasy simply did not exist, because if it did, it would be impossible to believe again after unbelief, as they would have been put to death after the first unbelief
Surely (as for) those who believe then disbelieve, again believe and again disbelieve, then increase in disbelief, God will not forgive them nor guide them in the (right) path.
This is further proven by the following verse
How can God guide a people who have rejected after believing, and they witnessed that the messenger is true, and the clarity had come to them? God does not guide the wicked people.
The Quran states, in no uncertain terms, that there is no compulsion in religion
Let there be no compulsion in religion Truth stands out clear from Error whoever rejects evil and believes in God has grasped the most sure hand-hold, that never breaks. And God is Hearing, Knowing.
The Quran states that God could have made all those on earth believe, thus asks who is man to enforce such a thing if God did not
And if your Lord had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have believed, all of them; will you then force men till they become believers?
The Quran states there were those who believed part of the time, then disbelieved part of the time in order to confuse and sow discord amongst the believers of the time. If death for apostasy existed, no sane minded person would attempt to do this as they would be killed the very first time they tried it
A section of the People of the Book say "Believe in the morning what is revealed to the believers, but reject it at the end of the day; perchance they may (themselves) Turn back.
Please also see the clear example set out in 488-91, in which the believers are told to offer peace with those who became hypocrites/apostates (i.e. were Muslim in name only but did not follow through with action during hostilities/fighting in this case) if they also offer peace
Why should you divide yourselves into two groups regarding hypocrites (among you)? GOD is the one who condemned them because of their own behavior. Do you want to guide those who are sent astray by GOD? Whomever GOD sends astray, you can never find a way to guide them.
They wish that you disbelieve as they have disbelieved, then you become equal. Do not consider them friends, unless they mobilize along with you in the cause of GOD. If they turn against you, you shall fight them, and you may kill them when you encounter them in war. You shall not accept them as friends, or allies.
Exempted are those who join people with whom you have signed a peace treaty, and those who come to you wishing not to fight you, nor fight their relatives. Had GOD willed, He could have permitted them to fight against you. Therefore, if they leave you alone, refrain from fighting you, and offer you peace, then GOD gives you no excuse to fight them.
You will find others who wish to make peace with you, and also with their people. However, as soon as war erupts, they fight against you. Unless these people leave you alone, offer you peace, and stop fighting you, you may fight them when you encounter them. Against these, we give you a clear authorization.
To conclude, it is clear that 'death for apostasy' does not exist in The Quran. People are free to believe and live their lives accordingly or not. If a community or system or any structure deprives its members of this basic freedom, it will produce hypocrites and suppressed people who have no strength of belief or goals to work for and will likely result in a weak system or community. Freedom of belief is the air that healthy and just communities breathe."
I got this answer from a sunni!
" No. I'm not Stuck . but I'm not ready for you at the moment with every knowledge in Islamic books.. cuz nothing is here going to concern me today.and I don't care if Apostate was killed or not.I just tried to express my view about this case.
u said killing apostates contradict with the Quran. and all your evidence for this from Quran is unacceptable in this case. because this verse 4137 is not a commandment or a law for apostates . they can hide in Islamic State or they can go some where else, so death for apostasy did not exist as you said and you tried prove from Quran..
God didn't mention which time this is going to happen , future or past ? , at where , in Islamic state or in liberal democratic country. so here it isn't a law.verse had nothing to do with Apostates..
verse this is what they said by them selves , did they act on it ?! or they were leaved alive after apostasy?!
verse 488-91 .. 88 the verse about Hypocrites .verse 89 you became with a twisted translation see from your above post < Do not consider them friends, unless they mobilize along with you in the cause of GOD. If they turn against you, you shall fight them, and you may kill them when you encounter them in war. You shall not accept them as friends, or allies. (489)> this is not what's in Arabic Quran. if you refered an accabtable translation you can see it's
< So take not Auliy?' (protectors or friends) from them, till they emigrate in the Way of All?h (to Muhammad SAW). But if they turn back (from Isl?m), take (hold) of them and kill them wherever you find them, and take neither Auliy?' (protectors or friends) nor helpers from them. (An-Nisa
489)>now do u feel any difference in two translation . so verse 489 proves that apostates should be killed in Islamic State by Muslim ruler , a ruler who can establish Islamic law . i don't think there is any ruler who can, today.
i think this is enough for you today , i don't have much time now . may be i will other about your other evidences later.
and thanks for trying to understand Islam, also your welcome."What should I reply? O0

Don't argue with a Sunni based on specific verses of the Quran. Anotherwords don't argue with them on this verse or that verse. The Quran would only make sense if taken as a whole.
There are many verses in the Quran that says we should not take patrons or guardians other than God. Moses was told this in the Quran. This is for everybody.
4.89. They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they) But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks;-
- Except those who join a group between whom and you there is a treaty (of peace), or those who approach you with hearts restraining them from fighting you as well as fighting their own people. If Allah had pleased, He could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you Therefore if they withdraw from you but fight you not, and (instead) send you (Guarantees of) peace, then Allah Hath opened no way for you (to war against them).
The question who was fighting and what for. There are verses concerning those who FOUGHT the believers and not the pagans. There are verses on the Jews who aided the pagan wars and not on the Jews in general.
Verse 4-89 has nothing to do with apostates. Second as Is aid apostasy in the Quran is concerning those returning to paganism and not Jews or Christians. The verses here are concerning the pagans who fought the believers for no reason except to silence the Quran.
This Sunni does not know what he is talking about.
2.190. Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not transgressors
2.191. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have Turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith
2.193. And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God, but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression
Also
2.217. They ask thee concerning fighting in the Prohibited Month. Say "Fighting therein is a grave (offence); but graver is it in the sight of God to prevent access to the path of God, to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and drive out its members." Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter. Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can. And if any of you Turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will bear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter; they will be companions of the Fire and will abide therein.
9.4. (But the treaties are) not dissolved with those Pagans with whom ye have entered into alliance and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor aided any one against you. So fulfil your engagements with them to the end of their term for God loveth the righteous.
Also
9.13. Will ye not fight people who violated their oaths, plotted to expel the Messenger, and took the aggressive by being the first (to assault) you? Do ye fear them? Nay, it is God Whom ye should more justly fear, if ye believe!
This is what the fighting was about. It has nothing to do with apostasy and when the Meccan clans came to power through the Ummayds and Abbasids they brought this culture with them in the form of hadith. The prophet was a victim of the apostasy laws of Mecca. They say him as an apostate who insulted the ways of his father and tribe and insulted the gods of Mecca. They then brought these concepts to Islam after finishing of the companions Umar, Uthman and Ali. It has nothing to do with the Quran or Muhammad.
As for such who do not fight you on account of faith, or drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness and to deal with them with equity, for God loves those who act equitably. God only forbids you to turn in friendship towards such as fight against you because of faith and drive you forth from your homelands or aid in driving you forth. As for those from among you who turn towards them for alliance, it is they who are wrongdoers. 608-9
Permission (to fight) is given to those against whom war is being wrongfully waged, and verily, God has indeed the power to aid them. Those who have been driven from their homelands in defiance of right for no other reason than their saying, Our Lord is God. 2239-40
Taken as a whole we see a picture emerging.
-
The sunni says that i'm using the wrong translation. He uses the ones with lots of brackets which destroys the meaning.
For example of I use -
They wish that you disbelieve as they have disbelieved, then you become equal. Do not consider them friends, unless they mobilize along with you in the cause of GOD. If they turn against you, you shall fight them, and you may kill them when you encounter them in war. You shall not accept them as friends, or allies.
THen the sunni uses-
< So take not Auliy?' (protectors or friends) from them, till they emigrate in the Way of All?h (to Muhammad SAW). But if they turn back (from Isl?m), take (hold) of them and kill them wherever you find them, and take neither Auliy?' (protectors or friends) nor helpers from them. (An-Nisa
489)>We are getting no where brickwall
