    Identities in the Quran.

The Quran uses different terms for different identities. I felt like studying these identities to see what Quran has to say about them(basically just compiling verses about the topic together and seeing what it says, anyone can do it). I thought this will help me understand myself and my position so hopefully it will inspire me to be better. So today I will share some of my findings with you (i?m still in the process), maybe it will inspire you too.

I?ll start off by sharing this verse

    (4913)

? 4913 (Asad) O men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him. Behold, God is all-knowing, all-aware.

The word underlined is atakaqom which is translated as consciousness/God consciousness, it has links with taqwa which root is WQY (Waw-Qaf-Ya = to protect, save, preserve, ward off, guard against evil and calamity, be secure, take as a shield, regard the duty. muttaqii - one who guard against evil and against that which harms and injures and is regardful of his duty towards human beings and God). The first identity discussed will be of the muttaqeen.

    Muttaqeen

    1. God loves, is with and supports the muttaqeen/tqw Allah

2194 God is with the muttaqeen
3125 God will aid the one that TQW
    97 God loves the muttaqeeen
944 God is aware of the muttaqeen
9123 God is with the muttaqeen
16128 God is with the ones that TQW and they are muhsineen
2237 our taqwa reaches God, muhsineen association?
3961 God will safeguard who TQW and shall not grieve.
4118 Saved are those who believe and yataqoon
4519 Allah is wali/protector of the muttaqeen
654 whoever yatiq/is conscious of God, God makes it easy to obey his command

    1. Paradise/hereafter for the muttaqeen

3198 Those who ittaqw Allah have jannat
477 the akhira is greater for the ones that TQW Allah
1335 Jannah is promised to the muttaqeen
1545 Muttaqeen will find themselves in jannah
1631 Jannah is the reward for muttaqeen
2515 Jannah is promised for muttaqeen
2690 Jannah will be in sight for the muttaqeen
3973 Jannah is for those that TQW
4715 Jannah is promised for muttaqeen
5115 Muttaqeen will find themselves in jannah
5217 Muttaqeen will find themselves in jannah
    6834 Muttaqeen will have jannah

1257 the reward is greater in hereafter if the ones that yattaqoon

12109 Dar alaikhira is better for the ones that TQW Allah
1630 Dar alaikhira will be the state of the dar almuttaqeen?
1630 Darr alaikhira is greater for the muttaqeen
2883 Darr alaikhira is for the muttaqeen

2452 those who yatq will triumph
5100 those who TQW will be in a happy state
1972 those who TQW will be saved

    1. Taqwa is a protection

6416 TQW helps us protect ourselves.
7201 those who TQW become aware of evil shaytan thoughts

    1. Tqw is for those who believe.

3102 those who believe must ATQW Allah and not die except as muslims.
511 Those who believe.. Ataqw Allah and the muminoon trust Allah
557 Those who believe, Atqa Allah if you are truly muminoon

26108/110/126/131/144/150/163/179 attaqw allah and take heed
26184 attaqw who created you and generations before.

    1. What does TQW/muttaqeen entail

    221 Ibada
2197 remain and be conscious of God during hajj
2180 muttaqeen must leave wealth with parents/near relatives when death is approaching
2183 siyyam is so you can tataqoon (stay conscious)
241 don?t deny truth, believe/follow in the revelation
3133 are quick to race for forgiveness/maghfira
    376 keep to your 3ahad/pledge
58 being just is close to taqwa
856 those who break covenant/pledge all the time are NOT yataqoon.
1290 those who yatiq are doers of good
1569 one that tqw Allah doesn?t disgrace/shame God.
    3370 speak justly
6416 keep your duty with God, listen and obey (follow Quran?) and spend in charity

    Birr and TQW.

2177 what bir is belief in God and the last day, angels, books and prophets. And gives wealth to relatives, orphans, needy and the person who asks, establishes salat and zakat, keep their 3ahad/pledge/promises, patient in times of tribulation and adversity and times of stress. they are who are true, the muttaqeen.

2189 explains albirr as not entering the house from behind.. meaning being proper?
52 help each other in albir waltaqwa. Talks about not what to do i.e. no ithm or 3idwan.
589 against ism and 3idwan, hold counsel in the cause of virtue and god consciousness

    1. Quran is the guidance for mutaqeen

22 Quran is huddan/guidance for muttaqeen
3138 it is a clear lesson, a guidance and instruction to muttaqeen
3849 it is a reminder (dhikr) for muttaqeen
6948 a reminder for the muttaqeen
6153 this is the straight path following it will keep you tataqoon
    20113 Quran is to yataqoon
3928 Quran is free of all deviousness it?s so we can yattakoon
6155 We have been blessed with this book, follow it and attaqu.

    Overall conclusion
Verse 2177 gives an over view of muttaqeen, we should aim to be muttaqeen their reward is jannah and God loves them. To be guided as mutaqeen we need to follow Quran. Those who seek guidance will increase in guidance and gain/grow in taqwa 4717.

Other identities found in mutaqeen =
    muhsineen, muslimeen, mumineen.

The most beautiful translation of this verse. That's it. I know not arabic. But this translation matches the experience.

        The Muttaqeen

The word Muttaqeen (22) is without doubt the most important word used by Allah to label the people who are the true believers. The most common translation of Muttaqeen as ?God fearing? does not give the proper understanding of the term. Similarly other interpretation by other translators i.e. ?one who guards himself against evil? or ? one who is careful of his duty? or ?one who is God-conscious? does not give more than one particular aspect of the comprehensive meaning of the word. The reason why this word is so important stems from the fact that Allah classifies three kinds of people right from the beginning of Sura Al-Baqara i.e. 1. the Muttaqeen (22-5) 2. the Kafireen, the non-believer (2 6,7) and 3. the Munafiqeen, the hypocrite (28-19). Although a short definition of Muttaqeen is given in 22-5, the detail definition is given in verse 2177, the usual translation of which is as follows

(2177) It is not righteousness that you turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believes in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the Revelation (Al-Kitab) and the Prophets; and gives his wealth ? however much he may cherish it -- for the love of Allah, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the poor and the wayfarer and the beggars and for the freeing of human beings from bondage; and is constant in prayer, and pays the poor due (aqamas salata wa?ataz zakata). And those who keep their promises when they make one, and are patient in times of misfortune and hardship and in time of stress. It is they who have proved themselves to be true, and it is they who are the Muttaqeen.

The above verse gives the most comprehensive meaning of the word Muttaqeen. However, for the Arabic phrase ?aqamas salata wa?ataz zakata? please see the following explanation

In the Qur?an the word Salat has a much wider meaning than just congregational prayers. In fact the Qur?an uses the words ?aqamas salata wa?ataz zakata? extensively and repeatedly. This use is far more comprehensive as it means the establishment of a social order in which every person has the chance and opportunity to develop his/her ?self?, according to the Divine Laws. It is important to note that the Qur?an uses the plural tense in ?aqamas salata wa?ataz zakata? and talks about the responsibility of those in power to establish this order (2241). It also says that they will do so by mutual consultation (423. The Qur?anic system covers all aspects of life, particularly the economic system. Verse 1187 is very significant, where the people are asking ?O-Shu?aib, -- does your Salat not permit us to even to spend our wealth as we desire??. They did not understand as to what Salat it is, that gives direction even in economic matters; they thought Salat is just a prayer or some sort of ritual.

Regarding Zakat the Qur?an has neither fixed any percentage, nor specified the items on which Zakat is levied. In order to establish a social order based on Qur?anic guidance it is necessary that the sources of wealth should be at the direction of the State, and all the citizens should keep the surplus of their earnings available to the State, so that the State may use it, as much as it requires, to provide sustenance and nourishment to the needy (2219). The people in authority will decide the requirements by mutual consultation, as mentioned before (423.

Conclusion In our daily prayers we recite Sura Al-Fatiha repeatedly and at the end we say (16) Guide us on the straight path (17) The path of those Thou has favoured; not (the path) of those who earn Thy anger, nor of those who go astray.

The straight path is given in the Qur?an and Allah says quite clearly that this Book is our ?Guidance? (Hidayat), ?Mercy? (Rahmat), ?Light? (Noor) and a ?Criteria? (Furqaan) to distinguish between right and wrong. Whether we follow it or not is our choice but Allah is indicating at the beginning of Sura 2, by clear definition of the words ?The Muttaqeen?, ?The Kafireen? and ?The Munafiqeen?,-- as to which direction we are leading to. Yet we ignore all these guidance and believe, too frequently, that ?the five pillars? are enough to follow Islam.

        Peace peace

          R.

          Peace R,

I like Asad's work however, translations are translations words/meanings can lose their original meaning or stature. just think of poetry in another language and then reading a translation, it wont have the same value the same awe affect as it does with the original work, you might even think "is that all it said". Or even poetry in the same language you might find words that rhyme but once you change the word even though it make have the same/similar meaning, or if you try explain the poem, the value is lost, it's not the same. it doesn't give the same affect.

I can read arabic, so i'm somewhat fortunate though my arabic aint crash hot, so a translation helps.. also i'm becoming more familiar with the PRL (project root list) focusing on the root of the word. it helps, it's useful ) if you know how to read arabic letters it's useful.

hah glad you found the quote amusing but seriously at least i can say for myself i can do alot of stupid (or not so stupid) things without thinking about it rationally. so it's a good reminder...

          Salam hope,

Nice article, though i found it funny how he seems to go into salat and zakat well more so with salat. I guess it is an attribute of the muttaqeen along with other things but not exclusive to the muttaqeen. Though the funny thing is when he implicates salat isnt a ritual but then mentions In our daily prayers we recite Sura Al-Fatiha repeatedly... Its like, isnt that a ritual?

          Anyway thanks for sharing )

Manafikeen and kafireen are other identities but im looking into the positive identities first. so i can focus on positives and what to do for positive outcomes. eventually, God willing ill look up the negative too then it should be more clear of what to avoid.

Im doing muhsineen. Hopefully ill finish it soon

          Peace )

              peace Sarah,

Thanks for the work. This is the kind of study and sharing of research that is needed.

also i'm becoming more familiar with the PRL (project root list) focusing on the root of the word. it helps, it's useful if you know how to read arabic letters it's useful.

One does not even need to read Arabic these days. By using http//corpus.quran.com for example anyone can find the root of any word they wish to study. It is so easy.

              http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

bravo Sarah -- This is really good!

let me add one to your list

                1. God loves, is with and supports the muttaqeen/tqw Allah
                  ...
652 And whoever yattaqi Allah - He will make for him a way out

If i may suggest, this thread may be best focused on T-Q-W (e.g. by renaming the thread's subject like that of this post's), so any finding regarding other "identities" can be observed in their relationship to T-Q-W. Then afterward we can make another thread to focus on H-S-N (IHsan, muHsin) for example. Just to keep it compact and modular for easy reference. So we'll have a series of "Identities in the Quran".

Insha Allah i will add to this thread incrementally and i encourage others to add new findings on T-Q-W here too. So whenever you read on T-Q-W, please check this thread if what you've just read had been listed (or not) or if you wanted to add a note.

                Peace!

22.37. It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches Allah. it is your piety that reaches Him He has thus made them subject to you, that ye may glorify Allah for His Guidance to you and proclaim the good news to all who do right.

So how does taqwa here fit with God consciousness and how is that different from piety?

Sure, you?re right you don?t need Arabic but what I mean to say is it helps. The PRL is useful for anyone as you said ?anyone can find the root of any word they wish to study?, if they wish too definitely. for me knowing some arabic gives me a bit of a drive.

I could go by your suggestion I just thought not many people would comment about the topic. I guess maybe in future if people want to be specific about an identity it might be easier in different headings/threads? Although some of them link with each other..

I basically was only doing an overview, so I did leave some verses out (well more than some). Anyway you made me feel compelled to look at all of them and categorise them. I guess that is not a bad thing just more time consuming, hopefully by tonight I?ll post it up.

                    Bigmo
The site Wakas suggested is quite useful http//corpus.quran.com/ if you have time or the will, look at it or use it.

Possibly it would have helped you understand the verse you mentioned.

The verse uses the word taqwa and it is the "taqwa" that reaches God.

So the question is what is taqwa? Taqwa is loosely translated as being God conscious right? But what do the God conscious involve?

God consciousness involves being pious. The ones who do taqwa are muttaqeen. So read point 5. it might help you understand taqwa and how this reaches God. wouldn't it be contradictory that one who is pious isn't God conscious? being pious is part of being God conscious is it not?

                    1. What does TQW/muttaqeen entail

                    221 Ibada
2197 remain and be conscious of God during hajj

                        Peace all

I thought before delving into this task that it wouldn?t be so difficult.. Though I was wrong to make such an assumption. It?s not so difficult to categorises verses but I think sometimes it?s difficult (for me) to understand some verses? so it requires more thinking than matching. So sometimes categorising ain?t so easy.

Some of the verses I read and thought ?huh? What does that mean? so I?d read an English translation and still think ?um.. I don?t get it?. So while I am categorising there are still some I have left out..

(I have pointed the verses I left out.. also some words aren?t purely an identity but the word may have the same root as the identity)

Just saying this in case people were wondering why I didn?t use all the verses..
                        basically

                        1. I didn?t totally comprehend it
                        2. I might have totally missed it
                        3. Didn?t know what to categorise them under
                        4. Wasn?t an identity
                        5. Got lazy and procrastinated.

Sorry for any inconvenience, God willing in due time I will try understand these verses and make comments about them.

And I did miss out a verse completely. Someone pointed it out for me BTW don?t hesitate to just post it on the thread

3933 those who bring truth and accept truth are muttaqeen

                            Peace Abdullah,

Anyone could do it if they wanted to...it?s not a secret mystery.. I just read the verses and categorise them..

                            Specifically..

I do a phonetic search on islamicity for the specific identity i.e. ?muttaqeen? that?s just helpful in isolating all the verses relating to that identity. Although when I do a PRL search I find them anyway..

I do a search on PRL for the root and get all the verses. I look them up and make a word document of all the verses. I print out all the verses (Arabic and English; I use Asad?s). I then make notes about what the verses says. I type up the notes and then group them, the ones that are similar. Make headings and there you go.
Things I dunno I just leave aside depending on my time/initiative I?ll look at different translations to try get a better understanding. Sometimes I miss verses because of all the moving and categorising..

But basically that is it. Just read about a topic, try to understand it and see what it says about it.

http//corpus.quran.com this is also good, but I don?t use it that much. I prob will when I go over the verses I skipped

I was separating the types of rewards i.e. jannah, ajr, dar akhira, 3aqiba etc?

(I didn?t finish) but I did notice something there is no mentioning of ?dar alakhira? nor ?3aqiba? to muhsineen

Darr alakhira could be interpreted as

Dar = house? residence? It infers your environment. Akhira something that happens later; future near or far off

3aqiba = future, something that comes after

So to muttaqeen is the future. So what does it mean? They are conscious aware of the future? Or more like they?re successful in the future? because they are conscious of God, of themselves, the present etc.

Could jannah mean more than what traditionalists think and more like better living life. Maybe, maybe not.

                              Just throwing ideas.

                              Salam

I was happy to find this thread researched and started by a moderator.

The thread is the most important since

And you people hasten emulously aiming at seeking protection and forgiveness which is conditionally ensured through the Elevated Messenger to you as promise from your Sustainer Lord, and towards the Paradise.

Her capaciousness-width is that of the Skies and the Earth.

The Paradise is prepared exclusively for those who sincerely endeavour to attain salvation.

It stems from Root . Ibn Faris stated in his famous lexicon

                                . .

That it leads to the perception of fending off - warding off from something else; to defend, to guard oneself. Property by means of which one guards oneself.

The irreducible feature of this Root is protection - safeguarding of somebody or something - something that prevents somebody or something from harm or damage. It can be transcribed by English noun "salvation - deliverance - preservation" which signifies act of saving of somebody from harm, destruction, difficulty or failure. All words stemming from a Root share the basic semantic feature. The concept denoted by English noun and verb "fear" or "awe" is not the component of semantic domain of this Root.

Grand Qur'aan is itself the best lexicon for all its important words and terms. It renders the meanings of its important words explicit by using it with such collocates that leave no ambiguity for the reader to comprehend the semantics of text.

Paradise is for those who sincerely endeavour for salvation
