I'm surprised that there is such thing as 'islamic ministry' although I believes it should be renamed as "Salaf ministry".
Soon Maldives will be yet another colony of Saudi Arabia.
            Congrats..

            Salam / Peace

Do you think it'll be as bad as Saudi? somehow, kinda doubt that.

They seem to want to uphold traditional ways?? Do they recognise "quraniyoon" as a legitimate sect? I guess probably not.

Salaf?s recommendations further call for specifying penalties for those who openly ?challenge or defy? God, his Prophet or Islamic shariah, and make it an offence to disrespect the Prophet or his companions.

So can Christians/Jews/other live there in peace?

The letter goes on to recommend that the proposed rules are put up for a public discussion among religious scholars.

I wonder who would have the guts to publicly speak in Maldives? though I dunno of any "certified" Quranic scholar.

I remember reading that Maldives was once upon a time ruled by a woman, it seemed peaceful back then according to Ibn Battuta lol if only women could rule P

Dunno if Quranists are exactly doomed but if there is a public discussion i'm sure(or at least hopeful) there will be space for public debate. Also dunno how the system in Maldives works maybe rallying might work? no idea. numbers usually make a difference like petitions or something but dunno if you have much of a chance there. I guess it depends on what exactly the law will do and how it will affect you

                Peace

This is all a good sign. Its a sign that the Sects are getting worried and insecure. Anyways the Quranist should focus right now on the internet. You can reach a much larger crowd than some local convention or newspaper. Going around distributing pamphlets and talking on radio and writing articles on magaines will put you at the mercy of the local authorities and all for a small audience. Internet is the key. So is satellite television. I believe its a matter of time.

Intellectuals and the more educated will pick up these things and then we will have allies. Look what happened i Egypt where the Quranist thinking is slowly trickling down to newspapers and radio after first gaining ground in the internet. The authorities there are not able to stop it because many journalist and right acyvist are now aware of who the Quranist in Egypt are. recently in Egypt International human rights organizations, local human rights organizations and Coptic organizations fought for the freedom of some Quranist arrested by Egyptian authorities under the directive of Al Azhar.

Quranist now are slowly entering the mainstream. But it takes time and internet is the best and safest method to spread the message. It avoids the problems that local activism creates and is far more eefective as a propgation medium. Sunnis are getting desperate as the rise of the so called Islamic parties has ended with bloodbath in Iraq and Somali and elsewhere. They have achieved nothing and they now feel an alternative might come about. They are ideologically obsolete and most of all they have alienated the intellectuals around the world who no longer aspire to the doctrine of these Sects. Look at whats happening in Sudan and Iran. This is the end of the Islamic parties that many people around the Muslim world looked towards to find a way for Muslims to gain back their status in the world.

Today they are seen be nearly all intellectuals in the Muslim world as a negative influence that has held back Muslim advancement.

Patience is a virtue and it pays off. peace

Well that is really unfortunate. Not to take away the light from you, but it's no picnic either in Malaysia..heard of the 'Allah dispute'?

                      http//www.nytimes.com/2010/01/09/world/asia/09malaysia.html

I thought it went quiet about a year ago. But it's getting worst. The fact that Muslims themselves don't know that Allah is not the name of Islamic God, it is actually 'God' in Arabic, or those who actually knew, are using this to gain something, or the fact that they have a Facebook group supporting this brickwall ... I don't know which one scares me more...its pretty bleak.

                            Salam,

I agree with Bigmo, this news is both good and bad at the same time. Good that the God Alone movement is making an impact, bad that they are going out full force to silence it.

My view is that truth can withstand the tests, while falsehood will perish..The sects have built their religions around falsehood, therefore, in any area of open debate or thought, the flimsy spider web they have for protection is quickly torn away.

Below is an e-mail from a brother in Mauritius who also seem to have a situation with the sects

I hope that you are fine by GOD?s Grace. In 2007, we were 3 QA who placed 350-450 posters in the street of our capital, Port Louis, inviting people to the message of GOD Alone. This was well received by Sunnis and on October 19 they persecuted us. The good thing is that there are people when they heard about QA and did their research and acknowledged the truth. In our debates with Sunnis, we learn that they had had previous debates with QA. But most of the QA are clandestine; perhaps they have some fear that the sunni authority.

This 13th of February, the salafis will again organize meeting to criticize us perhaps because we are accepting their request and we have 32 Questions for them, and the debate to be recorded and distributed to the public. (Every time that we ask the leaders questions, they say that we are like Bidatis, in their own terms Ahlus Sunnah by Bidatis. They invite us to come and they will bring their ill-likes and we shall invoke GOD?s curse to be on the liars. We refute them that we will not invoke GOD?s curse on them, if they?ll like to invoke on us, ok. We will surely come but after they?ll invoke GOD?s curse, we?ll ask them 32 Questions).

This is good and bad news.

Our existence has been acknowledged. The true message of the Quran is feared and there will be resistance against it. This is inevitable.

The bad news is that people will be oppressed. All I can do is pray for these people, that God gives them strength and protects them.

If these things become more and more common we will need to work to publicise the plight of these people so that awareness is raised of the oppression.
