To judge from the Qur'an the particular quality which made Maryam chosen among the women as distinct from among human beings of both sexes was to become the mother of 3isa the massih and the trials that she went through because of that and through which a male obviously could not go. In that sense womanhood means precisely those trials and circumstances to which a woman may be exposed, but not a male.

So I think san is 100% right when he says

Because she was a woman whereas Jesus was not

On the other hand in the aya you mentioned does not say that she is better than any women in the world ever. It says that she was chosen and purified and and chosen from among th women. Chosen as I understand it for that particular mission, to the an aya that God wants to give. It doesn't say that she is not as good as 3Isa or as good as any other Prophet ever. It is not saying anything about better or worse. I do not know that the Qur'an does that anywhere either about Mariam or Muhammad or any other. Prophets are chosen for a specific mission and they are always the best for that mission, but I do not think they are put in a scale.

Other thand the specifics of the mission I think that the virtue of Mariam is the same virtue as that of any other Prophet or virtuous human being utter submission to God and in that sense, her mission entailed a trial which is female specific, but the attitude and spirit is the same as should move every muslim, that is submission and love of God.

    Salaam

      You sum it up nicely.

@Omeiza, you may imagine what it feels like to be in her shoes -- in times of her pregnancy until giving birth to `Isa. Especially being a lady of faith. Her people clearly put pressure on her when she pointed to her baby to answer them.

Mary was not better than Jesus in humanity yet she was the best in womanhood! What is it that makes her a better woman?

It's amazing how little sense you can make.

No I'm sure it was you... D

Edit Okay maybe I understand. And to answer your question - why Mary was a "better" woman? I dunno maybe cause she's the mother of JESUS. Maybe you've heard of him ;D

by that i guess you're implying that she may have been made the role model for all hermaphrodites on earth.

May be because she gave birth to a child on her own even

Maybe it was because of her characteristic traits no?

And maybe her hermaphroditic nature had something to do with it?
