Dreams in Islam

What do you guys think of dream interpretation in Islam? I just had a horrible dream and I remembered that I read the interpretation of this dream in a Muslim dream book a few years ago, and it was something very bad. I can't remember the name of the book, but it is a very famous Islamic dream interpretation book.
I surfed the net and found other meanings to my dream. Either way what do you guys think? Does dream interpretation have a place in Islam?

was it Ibn Sirin's book about dreams? that's like one of the most famous. I wouldn't take what he says as gold or any other book claiming to interpret dreams. Ask yourself where do they get the knowledge of understanding to know what they mean? is it like a statistic game? or just mere reference to hadith? even with his book he doesn't justify more than half of his interpretations.
I think dreams have a lot to do with our thoughts and other things that go into our head via visuals such as tv, movies or just whatever.. but that's just my thought.
Do they have a place? well everything has a purpose but i wouldn't dwell upon it.

Yes it was Ibn Sirin. You are right, I was just thinking where did he get these interpretations from. The whole book is like a dictionary with meanings attached to symbols. So blood means this, hair means that and so on. I don't think he ever explained where he got these meanings from.
I just got scared because I've been waiting for some news today and went to bed anxious and woke up at 5 am with this dream and I remembered how I read the meaning of it in this book so many years ago.
It's funny I did a good search to find some psychological interpretations of my dream and found it to be more spot on and accurate about what's happening in my life then Ibn Sirin

Well exactly, his got all these interpretations makes you think woah this guy knows what he is on about.. but rarely does he associate a reference.. it's like um er ok. some of them could be true but as i said i wouldn't take it as gold.
well you know being scared, going to bed anxious.. don't you think it kinda makes sense why you had a not so nice dream?
Anyway dreams are dreams what you step foot out in life is what matters but it's nice to wonder sometimes.

It's interesting because there used to be this Egyptian sheikh who claimed to be able to interpret dreams and became quite famous and had his own program for a while. People would call in and tell him their dreams and he would interpret it for them. Then one day, they had about four or five sheikhs on another program who ripped him and said that no one has that ability.

You do hear some really bizarre things out there like sheikhs making magic water with Quran in it to protect you from jinn.. lol
Sheikh rivalries ay.. amazing what status can do to people, makes others believe anything almost..
Dreams.. dreams are subjective I?d say most interpretations are just guess work but God knows best

if i were you, Confused, i wouldn't bother with "Islamic" or any other kind interpretation of dream. Well, sometimes they do entertain my mind, but in the end, the final interpretation is my own, my choice.
It's been long since i had a "horrible" dream--or maybe i just don't take my dreams negatively anymore. I care more about the "dreams"/imaginations/thoughts i consciously make when i'm awake--because that will help me control not only my dreams in the night/dawn but also my mind in the following day.
Remember this the worst possible thought/imagination comes not while you're asleep.
also, you can always fit any of your dreams to your life--past, present or future. It is your choice, really, that matters.

What would you guys say if I told you that my dream came true? Today I got retrenched from my job, which is pretty much what the interpretation said it means. Coincidence? Either way I am miserable (
I sympathize with you, well ... but you're not going to say it's caused by the dream, are you? Maybe it's time to make a new dream--dream job etc etc... ) coz i've heard stories where people who pursued their dream job was, at some point in their life, triggered by a little accident like yours. Big chance.
So, would you like to share with us what your dream job is like? if nothing, just for fun, to cheer up ... c'mon, say it...

The irony is this IS my dream job. I immigrated to a new country and spent three and a half years unemployed. I had to study again, do internships, work for free and suffer rejection after rejection. In one summer, I applied to 700 jobs (yep 700) and got rejected from all of them. I didn't even make it to the interview phase. So finally when I got this job, I thought God was rewarding me for my patience and hard work and then bang I am unemployed again. The company is losing money and they need to let people go (

You're learning didn't go to waste. you gained some experience at this place now take that knowledge and inshallah apply it elsewhere ) think positive, negative thoughts are mind killing!
Don't be to hard on yourself. there is a common saying i hear my mum say... might be a hadith not sure but goes along the lines of "3abdi yes3a la is3a ma3ou" which roughly translates as "MY servant (in relation to us to God) seek/strive so I (God) can strive with you".
I believe if you strive for good God will aid us.. If you call on God, God will listen (2186) difficulties exist.. and well maybe they're meant for a reason.. beyond the wisdom the eye can behold.
try applying for a more renown company? or ask why you got rejected.

Salam, Confused, i can only imagine all that hard years you have successfully passed. So it's your dream job and you've fought your way to it. Now i can only offer something that you may find of no relevance at all... sadaqah/charity. Not to be preachy ==forgive me if i sound like that-- but there is something beyond our comprehension in sadaqah/charity. It's like inviting miracles to happen in your life. And i'm sure you know better than me about what sadaqah/charity you can perform in your current situation.
There are many verses in AQ regarding Allah's favor for charity/sadaqah --i can't quote all of them right now but it's easy to search them. When i feel helpless, this is the remedy i seek, and after some time, the Help would come in ways i could never imagine before.

It's interesting that you say that san. I was actually thinking of doing some volunteer work just to fill up my time. I am really miserable. I keep thinking how great it would be if I just drop dead and end it all. Maybe charity will keep me busy.
Then we may be connected, unconsciously cos i'm having a hard time myself trying to start a venture/business (whatever you call it). Especially since i don't wanna get caught in bank debts (another topic really). I have high, unexplainable hopes in sadaqah/charity.
Keep posting about your volunteering experience, would ya? Maybe i should look into it, too.
