The Eleven Surahs of the Qur'an
-
Greetings,
I have a book that includes what the author calls the "Eleven Surahs of the Qur'an. They are as follows in this order
Suratul Fatihaha (1)
Suratun Nas (114)
Suratul Falaq (113)
Suratul Ikhlas (112)
Suratul Lahab (111)
Suratun Nasr (110)
Suratul Kafirun (109)
Suratul Kawthar (10
Suratul Ma'un (107)
Surah Quraish (106)
Suratul Fil (105)Could someone please tell me why these are considered (by some) to be "The Eleven Surahs of the Qur'an"?
Peace,

when I first became muslim I was told by people to only look at the last ten surahs - in case I got confused or something.... I belive trad. islam values these highly because of their prophetic content and the ulama feel we are ok to look at that stuff.. Guess they just added in surah 1 to fill out the picture.
Inshallah someone else may have more informed knowledge of the alledged reasons for such a publication.

Salaamun alaikum,
If it's simply a compilation, then there's no reason. This isn't a divinely ordained name. Sunnis and other sects often focus on the end parts (see how many books they have on 'the 30th part of the quran') of the Quran without authority from Allah, imho.
thanks and peace.

These eleven are the ones that are used in prayers - usually one of those is recited after the 'fatiha' at each standing for the 'raka's.
The reason they are compiled is usually for people to learn these surahs by rote in order to use them in their 5 daily prayers. You'll notice they are the shorter ones and this is what makes them suitable for this purpose.
Regards.

asdfjk, mquran, and truth,
thank you for you responses. right, this section of the book is from publication on salah and "the correct way to perform it". although that part of the book which shows the steps of performing salah mentions that one can recite any other surah after al fatihah, it never says that the eleven surahs compiled in the back are the ones that certain Muslims usually say. and the section of the book with the eleven surahs doesn't give a reason as to why they've been compiled.
i had a feeling that they could be used after al fatihah because they were complete and short, but i wasn't sure since one of the du'a's listed as what "should" be said after as-salah 'alan nabiyy is a few lines from a larger surah (1440-41). i didn't want to assume.
okay, thanks again for your help.
peace,
