It's a physical impossibility, by the way. There are about a million species of living things in existence today...

How many species of creatures were roaming the earth during that period in history? There were definately less than the MILLION we see in existence today...

Depends on when Nuh's time was.

Assuming that Nuh is human (by human I meant Homo sapiens, the modern man), he'd live sometime between now and 200.000 years ago. I think biodiversity should even be somewhat larger in the past; a lot of species had gone extinct because of human presence, so in the past there should be more species.

By the way, of the millions I've mentioned, most will be small. (Insects, bacteria, protists, algae etc.). But I doubt these guys would be considered by those who were thinking of Nuh's ark.

Here's my own understanding of Nuh's ark

The deluge was a local flood. It didn't drown the whole world.
Nuh made an ark to save his family and followers.
The animals carried on board consist of the local livestock, not every species.

Hey guys, so
orthodox thinking dictates that Noah took a pair of every species of animal onto his ark. yeah I hope I'm not the only one that finds this ridiculous and since I haven't found proof in the Quran that states otherwise, I would go as far as to say that I am right. I'm sure that this has been discussed but I thought it was interesting.

Some guy here, (with an wonderful imagination which I miss) wrote an article about
how Noah, his people were scientifically advanced and that he had the DNA of all the speices that would be have been destroyed by a flood.
He did live for a 1000 years. Recently some scientist proposed building a similar ark on the moon, just in case we decide to nuke the earth.

I recall when I studied this the Arabic words in question can imply a local flood, not a global one. Might want to check that out.

This subject depends on the context in the scriptures. The Hebrew usage throughout the Torah don't clearly insist upon a global flood, it could also be referring to a local flood. The usage of it, in it's Hebrew language, implies the drowning of everyone who lived in Noah's area, people who he preached to... However, this can cause a conflict with the Qur'aanic passage where Noah asks G-d to wipe out all disbelievers from the entire earth, meaning the whole planet (7126). This is speaking of all people on the earth, not in one designated land. So, did G-d answer Noah's request and wipe out all disbelievers on the earth, or did He only drown those throughout the land?

In Classical Arabic, and in the usage of AQ, 'ard' can also mean 'land', e.g. 521, 531, 7110, 7137 amongst others.

Contemplating the likelihood of when Noah's time occurred intrigues me.

It couldn't have been too early in human evolution so as to precede the development of speech (advanced enough to convey a message), nor, I guess, could it have been too late so as to leave people with no message.

Are we talking a hundred thousand years? Two hundred thousand? Three, four, five?

A most fascinating thought.

Re LOCATION OF NOAH'S FLOOD IN HIGH LAND
I read once that Noah's ark was found on Mount Ararat in Turkey. I've got a question which i've been pondering on about for weeks. Where did Noah dwell? I have a feeling he lived somewhere in present-day Southern India. This is because in the Hindu scripture, the Vedas, a man named Manu was also told by God to save his family from a flood which was to come by building a ship. The word Manu was probably derived from 'man', a sanskrit word and 'nu', probably an adaptation of the word 'Nuh'. So, mathematically equating, Manu of India = Noah of the Ark (?) Wallahu Alam.

Arguably, Noah was a descendant of Enoch, who was believed to live either in present-day Syria or somewhere in present-day Iraq . Then again, since human population was only beginning to expand, maybe exploration could lead them to India.

Personnally I dont think it was EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL...rather just "two pairs" of what? Im not sure.... But I think it was just a Local Flood not a Global one aswell. It wouldnt make ANY Logical sense to create a Giant Ship....Sail and search the entire earth for 2 pairs of animals and then save them and his family... I think thats illogical and highly highly unbelievable... The ship would have to be the biggest stricture on earth...yet only made by 1 man with no tools.

I believe it more to be kinda like the Movie Bruce Almighty...or not Bruce Almighty but the Second one..with that Guy from the "Office".

You mean of course 'Evan Almighty'. Or how about the recent film - 2012. Showing a global flooding whilst some land masses remained.

I did read somewhere that there seems to be a 'flood legend' in most cultures - not clear on what that would mean in reality.

Also, I am not of the opinion that Allah intervenes in the universe in such a fashion as to 'cause' a flood - rather the pending information of the flood could have been made available to Noah in order for him to save himself and some believers - hence the need for pairs of some animals - for food, rather than the intention to repopulate the world. Imagine two lions right next to two wildebeest...

In my opinion, I would state that the accounts referring to past prophets are related for a lesson as opposed to being historical records. The history is only of any import if it is to show us a lesson to learn from and economise our efforts. We can't be like Noah, nor would we (in all likelihood) come across a flood and build arks...(with lions and wildebeest).

All this time I thought that the flood was connected to the melting of the icecaps, and sea level rise that ended the last ice age. hmm
