Well, no where that I've been able to find does the Quran satisfactorily define what it means by marriage, so I don't find it sensible to treat it as a mandate for polygamy in that sense. On the worldly side of things, do you really think that a society where rich people can marry multiple wives is can be one in which people treat each other, male and female, with respect as equals? I think it encourages the opposite, institutionalises both gender inequality and inequality between rich and poor.

I think seeing things that way is problematic, because it makes it then really hard to argue against other forms of sexual deviancy and you totally lose the argument that real Islam is about equal rights. I like to try and link Islamic morality with natural justice, which means to say we are naturally monogamous, and the feelings we have of sexual jealousy are natural and given by God to make us protect our partners from sinning.

Islam is not about equal rights, islam is about submitting to the god.

well actually, The way I see it, Men and Women are Not Equal and will never be Equal
Man will always have the Un Equal benifit in never experiencing labor Pain, Women will Always have the un-equal benifit of ______ (Im not a women, so women please insert an advantage you have that men will never have.)

Women are not Men and Men are Not Women. So We cannot sit here and advocate Equality of things that are naturally made in certain ways.
I believe in Equal Rights as far as Civil Rights,Education,etc....But lets be realistic when it comes to Marriage.

I think (from my interpretation of the Quran) Men are Allowed to Have more than One Wife. We can have up to Four under certain Guidelines and Conditions. Women however do NOT have the right. If a Woman Does not like it...She can either

          A) Divorce Her Husband because He is ultimatly going to Marry another women reguardless of being Civil or concerned...So Allah is going to Judge The Husband and the Woman,

          B) She can stay with him and the 2nd wife,

          C) She can divorce him and get with somebody else, or if she chooses she can choose to get with 5 Guys...
          (and Allah will judge).

So what does this all mean to me?

A Husband and Wife should talk about how they Feel about this Issue especially BEFORE they Get Married. I have talked with my wife before and we choose to NOT marry in another Woman/Mother of Orphans. Some people can do it and some cant, depending on Age, Situation, and type of Love they have. Some Marriages are Deppley filled with Passion, and other Marriages are just filled with Companionship. it all depends.

Especially Older men and women, Alot of Older people Dont get married for Deep Love and Passion, but actually more for Companioinship/Security. (especially since their Sexual Drive (libedo) is probabily gone.)

So if there is an Old Man who wishes to Marry 4 old Women who are Poor and have poor Orphan kids (for whatever reason)...Should He not be allowed to marry them? What is the Problem here? I dont see One.

Does the Quran NOT say that You can Marry up to Four Women? Does it NOT say that? Whats wrong with Polygamy?
If you cannot do it, simpy Dont Do it. its an Option.

Marrying in that sense of supporting 4 old poor women with poor grand children doesnt mean you have to sleep with them in the same bed either, i don't know how i would call such contracts

Men and women may not be equal, but equal rights is something quite different, it's about having rights... but they must be the same in value or quantity, not that the people are the same.

Well old women only if they have children to support and no fathers. Quran 43 demands when you are able to do so, but what if those old grannies demand that you marry one of their younger women? You'd have to take the offer as that is also acceptable according to quran 43.

I think, even a younger couple can do it.

                  Let me ask this Question....

Does Allah Allow Men to Marry Up to 4 wives According to the Quran....YES or NO?
Does Allah Allow Women to Marry Up to 4 Husbands According to the Quran.....YES or NO.

My Conclusion A Man can Marry up to 4 Wives and (have sex with them since they are his wives), If
                  A)They are Mothers of Orphans
                  B) Done in the best interest of Justice.

Yes - submitting to God, NOT submitting to other human beings. Equality is about refusing to submit to other human beings. That's why men and women must be equal. To say that women are not equal to men is to say there are two gods, Allah and Men. If you are a monotheist you cannot believe this. Polygamy is Polytheism. Monogamy is Monotheism.

I disagree with you on the Following Grounds...

Yes, Islam IS about Submitting to Allah...you are Correct About that...
But what does "Submitting to Allah" Mean?

is Feeding the Poor =Equal to= Submitting to Allah? Yes, Since it is Allahs Commandment.
Is Obeying(i.e.Submitting to) the Government/Leader in Authority that is a True Muslim =Equal to= Submitting to Allah? YES

So, would you say you "Submit to your Wife? and Your Wife Submit to you?" thats in turn submitting to Allah.

So In Islam...we say we "SUBMIT TO ALLAH", however we also Submit to other things in Accordance with Allah's Orders.
We do not Worship the Government, we do not Worship our Husbands or wives, however we by deffinition "Submit" to them in respect as that in the larger picture constatutes as submitting to Allah and His divine Order....Does it Not?

If Having More than One Wives Constatutes as Polytesit then how do you translate that verse in the Quran that Says "Marry two or three or Four"?
Also by your understanding...there could be alot of Orphan mothers in places that may never ever get married, have a father for the children OR be intimate with another man again. What heppens to them?

How about the Battle where Muhammad and his followers Lost alot of Muslim Men? what happened to the Widowed mothers? I know History isnt Quranic...But if we are going to believe that Christopher Colubus and Cortez really existed and Killed thousands of Indignous Soon to be Hispanics....Why cant we believe Muhammad and the Muslims had a Battle? !

If Polygamy is polytheistic then Polygons are also Polytheistic....and Polyester is also Polytesitic...and I guess Polly the Bird who always wanted a Craker is Also Polythestic...

SO i guess that makes Monomorphism Monothestic? confused ??? rotfl laugh

                            Salaam Peace D handshake

Well, when it comes to historical events where large numbers of people died horrible and painful deaths at the hands of their fellow human beings, following which there might have been some morally dubious sexual relationships, I think the killing probably raises a lot bigger moral problems than the polygamy.

As to the Quran being suggestive of polygamy, there are several passages which sound like they are about polygamy, but none of them are entirely clear. "Marry two or three or Four" can be talking about marrying a widow who is looking after that number of children. Anyway, I don't think the injunctions to any specific behaviour in the Quran are absolute laws. I think the way it happened is that the power of God worked through the Prophet Muhammad and that what we are meant to draw from the Quran is guidance and principles which are divinely inspired, but still fallible. Even if the book received is perfect, the instructions are not.

When it comes to monogamy, as I see it sexual intercourse is a manner of worshipping God. Hence being married to two partners simultaneously means the 'prayer' of sexual union is unfaithful to its purpose. I view that as the 'setting up of partners' which defines idolatry.

Furthermore, since we human beings are all imperfect, the assertion that men are superior to women is seriously misguided. If God wanted man to have more than one wife, he would have given him more than one penis. One God, one man, one woman, and one vessel to transport the essence of man to woman. That's natural justice, how God created us. The wish to change this is as I see it the intelligence of human beings attempting to change nature. But it is a bad idea for us to try to change something so fundamental which God has decreed.

                              Peace peace

"And be humble in how you walk and lower your voice. For the harshest of all voices is the donkey's voice."
                                    Surah 3119

"When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or (at least) return it equally. Certainly, All?h is Ever a Careful Account Taker of all things."
                                    Surah 486

"God loveth not that evil should be noised abroad in public speech, except where injustice hath been done; for God is He who heareth and knoweth all things. (The Noble Quran, 414"

"When thou seest men engaged in vain discourse about Our signs, turn away from them unless they turn to a different theme. If Satan ever makes thee forget, then after recollection, sit not thou in the company of those who do wrong. (The Noble Quran, 66"

"Who avoid vain talk; (The Noble Quran, 233)"

"And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say 'To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you we seek not the ignorant.' (The Noble Quran, 2855)"

"So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!- (The Noble Quran, 7042)"

"(The sinners will say) 'But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;' (The Noble Quran, 7445)"

                                    As-salaam Brother FAR.
These are all "Islamic" verese that can be used to justify a person reminding someone to be repsectful.
I myself need reminders from time to time.

Will you reply to my As-salam with another greeting better or to the equvilent to it?
                                    handshake
