well...Since Drinking Alcohol has been made "Okay"... in small amounts....
I guess we should now say Gambleing like this is "Okay"... Since its in such small amounts and nobody really got hurt from it....
(and perhaps even a little Idol Worship in small amouts too... hail (I mean Hey....A little Idol worship never harmed anybody right?) laugh
Personally, I think we could make every haraam thing in the world okay as long as its in minimal amounts and doesnt Directly inflict large amounts of pain on people...
....I mean... we dont want to be Like the Sunni's and Say that ALL Haraam things are Haraam in ANY Amount.
(A little Haraam never killed anyone)Anyone with me?

Now onto the national lottery... in the uk they give to many charities, and fund many community projects (i dont know if the lotto in other countries works the same)... So... if i want to give to charity... why not put in ?2 to the lottery, which allows me to give to charity, and at the same time, possibly win some money. Is this considered gambling as per "maysar"?
The problem with this is there is no guarantee that you will make a ?profit? and you?re basically just playing the game. Many people would for example participate in gambling for a lottery ticket, but will you gain all of their money? No off course not the company rips people off by gaining things all in the name of chance and some lucky guy or girl will win a few dollars.
About the bank offering an incentive, you?re using the bank as a service you?re paying and getting something out of it. You?re not exactly gambling so if they gave you a gift or whatever, you don?t lose anything you?re not gambling you?re 2 dollars away.
Many banks offer incentives also, if you deposit a certain amount of money they don?t charge you. So each bank works differently. But i don?t think it?s gambling. You need to look at all criteria?s... if you?re just doing it to win something when you can save elsewhere that?s just stupid.
They say money changes people. One day we may be poor so the value of money would be high... but sometimes we may get that sum and not even have to work hard for it, will we remember the bad times? Will we remember to grateful and wise?

As Sister Sarah has said, you are playing chances here, with no real 'profits' whatsoever. One thing you have to find out is, how much of your money will actually be transferred into charity? Don't fall into a trap, thinking that you're doing good deeds, but in reality, you're not. You know well that games of chance, along with alcohol, is Satan's work. Anyway, if you want to give charity, do it for the sake of charity and not have the hope of winning some money attached to it. Just think about it, if you win the money, whose money do you win? It's other people's money and you don't earn it through labour. You gain something from the loss of others. Do you reckon it's okay? I personally think, I can give charity to somewhere/someone else, where no strings attached. But that's just me.

I'd Rather play Allah's Lotto....I think I have a better chance of winning that then the State's Lotto.Besides...the state probabily uses those millions of Fiat paper dollars (at interest) for evil corrupt purposes without your consent (like always)...
So at least with Allah's Lotto, you can be sure Allah isnt going to corrupt your money. D -

Wakas Personally I think that it is still gambling, whether or not charities are involved... I take the 2219 to mean that it should be avoided even though one can argue that there is some good in it (like alcohol)... Also looking at the meaning of the word maysir... it also has connotations of "risk taking" doesnt it? And in playing the lottery it is simply a game of chance and risk... although i have not really looked at the end of verse 2219 - what is it referring to? I will need to look into it.

Peace.... in terms of how much will be given to charity... well the same applies to any charity donation - how much of your money actually goes towards the needy (as opposed to marketing/pr/charity expenses etc)? Unless you give directly to a person in need you never have a guarantee of how much of your donation goes to the person in need or to the running of the operation.
Just off at a slight tangent.... do you think buying a charity raffle ticket is gambling also?

I won't know exactly. Hence, I very well researched the charity institution in which I'll give my monthly donation to. For example, I chose the institution that is known world-wide and yet it involves little marketing/advertising of the institution itself, and by reading the update in the website (so you know they actually do work). But hey, charity can also be done individually. So you do not to give charity to an institution to make it work. If you see a homeless person/a beggar, give him food , that will be more effective. With the raffle or lottery thing, I'll avoid it since I know that a portion of my money will definitely go towards buying the winning items p.

Few weeks ago though, my friend said that gambling in a small amount (playing scratchies or Lotto) is OK since we're not gonna lose a big amount to make us destitute, then I just replied, "Sure, a bit of zina is okay then as long as you make sure you don't fall pregnant." and she went quiet lol.
That being said, something forbidden may, in exceptional case, be allowed if the benefits outweigh the harm. Like, you can eat haraam food if it will save your life from starvation; or you'll be forgiven if you fight for self-defense. In the case of gambling/game of chance, you have to think, are you doing yourself and the people around you good by doing so? I cannot think a circumstance where it will... I think there was only one circumstance where a Messenger engaged in a game of chance (Yunus/Jonah), and he got cast out of the ship, he could've died...
no matter how righteous you make it sound to be, like... it's for charity, if I win, I'm gonna give it to charity etc etc, still, you're participating in an activity where one person benefits from other people's loss. How can you use the winning money (if you win), knowing that it's been ripped off other people, that you haven't earned it in a righteous way.

In any case, most lotteries/gambling systems are setup that the players have a small chance of winning but the organizers are profiting, whoever wins the prize. The prize money is small compared to their profits.

A flip side to the story. My cousin used to spend his whole wage on the lottery for several months. He was left with no winnings and a very big credit card bill.
I believe if you are destined to win, spending ?1 a week is good enough ;D If you deffinitly want to win then you can play all the combinations and spend around ?14 million, cant guarantee that your winnings will be more than what you spent though

I used to play some and it went for 2 years, until my mom came to know and she says, even if you won, would you be ok to feed your children with the money that you never earned and it is a money that many many thousands of people put their share, and even though every one is ok with the notion that they might lose and one person would win. but where is pride son, dont you have dignity to feed your kids with the money you earn with your intelligence and hard work and not that it has share for so so many people earmnings. Then I stopped, It may not be a valid reason for others but it made me at peace and i am happy to see my children growing with the money I make from working like normal people.
