Salam,
It has good and bad in it, but the bad outweighs the good. It is permissible without any moral or legal punisgment. Salat should not be approached while intoxicated. Paradise has rivers which flow with it.

Alcohol should be avoided as it was mentioned earlier the "evil out ways the good" and we are told to stay away from evil. There are many differences of opinion on the matter though. I do find it interesting that in the Sunni thought that Hanifi felt it was in permissible in small, non intoxicating amounts with certain types of alcohol.
I have seen a lot of evil the consumption of alcohol can cause and would personally recommend staying away from it.
Some Muslims believe that anything containing Alcohol is harm (perfume, rubbing alcohol, etc). This has no basis in the Quran that I know of.
The strictest verse 590 says
"O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and sacraments, and fortunes are foul tools used by the devil. You shall avoid him so that you may be successful." -Free-minds
"O YOU who have attained to faith! Intoxicants, and games of chance, and idolatrous practices, and the divining of the future are but a loathsome evil of Satan's doing'105 shun it, then, so that you might attain to a happy state!" - Asad
Two notes
First it refers to "Intoxicants"
Second is the difference in Translation as one says avoid "Intoxicants, etc" and the other says avoid "Satan"
Someone who understands the Arabic language better can probably give more insight to that.
However, Allah knows best.

Even if it's not haraam, I would stay away from it. It causes addiction.

Assalamu aleikum..
My opinion it's that the alchool it's not really permited, it says that in the alchool and gambling are great sin, so where is sin it's a bad thing so alchool it's not really a good thing..
They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess ." Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses that you might give thought. - Qur'an 2219

hummm..and you use hadith as what ?
Dear The Reformer One
Your question is shining with wisdom and it deserves a wise answer. The only problem with your question as it seems, the punctuation and space. Especially, I found it very interesting that you did not put space between your "hummm.." and your "and", yet you put a space between your "what" and the question mark "?". If you do not have an implicit message in this interesting twist in spacing, then ignore this pedantic remark.
Now I am in Boston getting ready for a trip to San Diego and the time is too late.. So, my answer may not fit the level of wisdom emanating from your rhetorical question. My dear friend, hadith can be used in thousands ways for thousands of reasons. I have not heard that hadith are used how to make sausages or how to fly an airplane, but if you read the books of FIQH, you will be surprised about the how fertile hadith is... As for us and others, here are a few
We use haidth when we discuss with Christians to show them that Muslim clergymen, like their counterpart Christian clergymen, centuries after the prophet Muhammad distorted his progressive and rational message, fabricated many prohibitions, added many rituals, divided themselves into many sects, and created many human idols... When Christian see themselves in Sunni and Shiite mirror than they ask themselves "Why we should consider our saints, scholars and popes different than of Muslims. If the scholars and saints of Muslims could fabricate in the name of God and his messenger, then ours too could do the same..."
We also use hadith to tell engaging stories to genius people who cannot endure pulp fiction and stupid stories. For instance, the story of miraj is a perfect one. You can keep a genius interested with Muhammad bargaining with God over the number of prayers by oscillating between the 7th heaven and 6th heaven secretly from God while getting advice from Moses on a very difficult problem of knowing that it is impossible for a human being to perform 50 TIMES prayer a day.
I use hadith in my logic class as examples of logical forms.
We also use hadith to learn the great relationship between Sahaba and their extraordinary commitment to created books besides the Quran. As you know Sahaba are likened to stars. Each is a star and you will be guided by following any of them. For instance, we learn that Aisha and Ibn Abbas hated Abu Hurayra and called him a liar. Omar bin Hattab warned him to stop fabricating of Mishna for the ummah. Despite these, they all came together and contributed to the volumes of hadith books.
We also use hadith to learn about holy animals, such as the holy goat who ate the verses instructing stoning to death for adulterers.
Some use hadith to as a peephole into Muhammad's sex life. For instance, without hadith we would not know the great male modeling of the Prophet he made sexual intercourse with nine women in one night. So, it is the responsibility of every Muslim men to marry several wives and should make sure to keep every one of them happy every night.
Some use hadith to learn that raping captured women during wars is permitted.
Some 50-60 years old men use hadith to justify marrying 9-12 years-old girls. Without this hadith all those girls would be bored to death in their homes.
Some use hadith to kill and torture apostate people.
Some use hadith to promote good health and cure almost any disease through bloodletting, cauterization and eating Ajwa-brand date.
Some use hadith to show that all sahaba agreed with Omar's statement while Muhammad was in his death bed, "Hasbuna kitabullah," that is "only smart people follow hadith and sunna"
Some use hadith to stop women distracting men while praying. Women are in the company of donkeys and dogs.
Some use hadith to claim leadership for the Quraish tribe alone. Without that hadith Persians, Turks, Anglos would claim leadership over Arabs.
Some use hadith to promote the right fashion, such as growing beard and shaving mustaches.
Some use hadith for potty training. For instance, they learn not to enter bathrooms with right foot, not to piss while standing. They also learn to us odd number of rocks, such as three, five, seven, to clean their bottom.
...
In sum, hadith has many usages and it depends on who you are. I think you can use hadith to condemn these smileys too, since they are animated pictures

Thank you for the observation, I didn't pay attention to the ponctuation and the spaces because It's a habit from Msn lol ).

Peace,
Edipfirst of all, Salam alaykom .
Second of all, the question was destined to the guy that he doesn't know how to use the hadith, but surely your post will be a great lesson for him .
Third of all, I'm aware of these things that you have stated in your post and I don't agree about using hadith to justify emoticons or smileys , this will be useless plus it's meaningless.Have a nice trip!!
