    As-salamu alaykum!

    I have been trying to understand the implications of 923 in regards to relationships with non-Muslims. I thought it was okay to be friends as long as they don?t hurt or fight Muslims based on 608 and 609. But 923 seems to forbid close relationships with non-Muslim family just based on their disbelief?

    I had seen someone mention that 608 and 608 does not include all non-Muslims, which has confused me even more. Could this be true?

    Pickthall translations
    O ye who believe! Choose not your fathers nor your brethren for friends if they take pleasure in disbelief rather than faith. Whoso of you taketh them for friends, such are wrong-doers. (923)

    Allah forbiddeth you not those who warred not against you on account of religion and drove you not out from your homes, that ye should show them kindness and deal justly with them. Lo! Allah loveth the just dealers. (608 )

    Allah forbiddeth you only those who warred against you on account of religion and have driven you out from your homes and helped to drive you out, that ye make friends of them. Whosoever maketh friends of them - (All) such are wrong-doers. (609)

      O those/you who proclaim to have accepted-become believers, listen;
      You should not hold your fathers and brothers as your guardians, protectors, managers if they loved the disbelief over the belief;
      And if someone of you people holds them as patron, allies
      Thereby, such people are truly the evil-doers-distorter-creators of imbalances-disorders-over stepping.

      O those/you who proclaim to have accepted-become believers, listen;

      You people should not purposely adopt My enemies and your enemies as your guardians/protectors/ godfathers/ managers/allies?

      Placing before them gestures of love and compassion?

      While they had publicly refused to accept/believe in that which has since come to you from the Infallible Discourse, they forcing the drive out of the Messenger and you people?

      That you believe in Allah the Exalted, the Sustainer Lord of you people;

      If you people have come out for fighting/striving in My Path/Cause and for seeking My Approval and Appreciation,

      Holding secret the feel of love and compassion towards them;

      And I fully know that which you concealed and that which you openly stated.

      And whoever will do that from amongst you?

      Thereby he has certainly lost the aright path.
