    I think this verse has been discussed earlier also on some section of the Forum. The perception gets confused or distorted when we convert the tense from present to past. The first line is like this
    http//haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.Arabic%20Text/033.%20Al%20Ahzaab/33.37.gif
    And when you were saying to the one, upon whom Allah had bestowed favour and you had bestowed favour upon him, after he had divorced his wife, "You hold back your divorcee wife to you , and you be cautious and afraid of Allah"
    After divorce, husband has two options, retain divorcee wife or let her go respectably after the completion of "restrictive period known and decided by the husband, and also counted by him".

    One of the causes why he was being asked to reconsider his decision and to holdback his wife
    http//haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.Arabic%20Text/033.%20Al%20Ahzaab/33.37a.gif
    And you had the fear in the heart of your heart that which Allah was going to make public; and you were apprehensive of people , and Allah is more deserving that you fear Him.

    The fact of divorce first comes into the notice of the household and later becomes known to people if the husband has not retain/held back his divorcee wife on compromise/reconciliation.

    http//haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.Arabic%20Text/033.%20Al%20Ahzaab/33.37b.gif
    Thereat when Zaid conclusively fulfilled all after requirements from her
    http//haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.Arabic%20Text/033.%20Al%20Ahzaab/33.37c.gif
    We caused the marriage of her with you, the Messenger so that henceforth there remains no harm and embarrassment for the believers in the matter of wives of so called sons when they have separated from some of them after fulfillment of divorce requirements/laid down formalities.
    http//haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.Arabic%20Text/004.%20An%20Nisa/temp%2014%20%204.047.gif
    And the command/decision of Allah is bound to take physical existence/get executed.

    Chapter33

    Question 4 is quite clarifying. The List is of those women who are not permissible is exhaustive. That List does not include or mention divorced or widowed women who were in the Nikah of so called sons. And here the reason mentioned is that henceforth there remains no "" which shows people were reluctant in marrying divorced or widowed wives of their adopted/or so called sons. This also abundantly makes clear that the man referred was one who was known as so called son of him.

      Traditionally in Islam when someone is adopted they are still considered the son of their father and inheritance comes from their father not their adopted father, nor are they supposed to take their adopted fathers name.

      I don't know if there is a Quranic basis for this but it could be related to the verse. There may have been a stigma about marrying the widow or your adopted son.

        Why would they be reluctant to do something God has not prohibited? If we know the prohibition list and adopted son's wife is not there in the list, isn't it enough to know its not prohibited? And why would someone want to marry his adopted son's ex-wife? I mean have you ever heard of such cases in your life? I haven't! Why it was so important for God to make prophet marry her and mention it in quran? does it make sense?

          Do the PM's accept historical facts and what do they use to obtain them? Furthermore, will they accept any Seerah of the Prophet PBUH and if they do, then on whose or what authority? Looks like a difficult quagmire for some.

          Who was this Zaid character I hear them ask? Don't be surprised if some of them claim that Zaid was a leaf from the tree or some preposterous explanation because the root word in Lane's Lexicon says so!

          Peace

              You know it's true. Some members might not write it now that I've mentioned it, but they sure as hell will be thinking it. I know we all don't see eye to eye, but some stuff I have seen here, is beyond beggars belief. (

                Agreed, with this verse for example I think it is clear, Zaid is a person and the Prophet's (S) adopted son. I look at history but use the Quran as my criterion.

                  I think the prophet's reluctance was with respect to what people might say/think about him. That's what i understand from the phrase you feared men whilst God had more right of fear. I know it's wierd the case of WANTING to marry ones adopted son's ex-wife but it's possible and if the prophet had feelings and it was ok in the sight of God, then he should not have restrained himself for the sake of what others might think of him. As for why this is mentioned in the Quran i don't know. There are other verses that are more controversial IMO as to why they are even there. In this case it might be that an example is being shown in the history stated.

                    For those who believe there is no revelation besides the Quran it would kind of make sense. If there was an uncertainty about something it would have been corrected through revelation.

                    Just a thought.

                      Amongst others declared sanctified it is distinctly mentioned

                      and are sanctified the spouses of your sons who were born of your sperm;
                      With the mention of "sons" a qualification has been mentioned "those who.....". This shows that in peoples perception and practice there are sons other this also.

                      And the historically fact that people adopted and considered sons born of sperm of others as their own sons as mormal honoured and accepted tradition of the society is evidently mentioned here

                      these are oral utterances of you people merely with your mouths ;

                      The time honoured social traditions and practices in a society that has since been divided into believers and non believers carry consideration and restraints and they consider and feel , i.e. a feel of disconcert in its voilation because of negative accusations by other members of the society.

                      Allah asked them to abolish the tradition of calling as their sons who are born of fathers other than them

                      You people call them by their fathers , that is most appropriate and balanced conduct in the judgment of Allah;

                        The story is talking about the prophet peace be upon him and a man called Zaid who God betsowed him and the prophet bestowed him as well by entering to Islam, this man was kidnapped when he was young from the place where he was living with his parents and the kidnapper sell him to a rich man in Quraish, this rich man gave him as a gift to khadija the wife of the prophet peace be upon him may God be pleased with her for serving her but in turn she gave him to the prophet for servinh him as well, instead of that the prophet adopted him after being a prophet.

                        Anyways the prophet became a prophet to his nation and he propose marriage from Zainab for his adopted son Zaid, and they got married but after a year this marriage between Zaid and Zainab was not good, they were not ok, so Zaid and Zainab got divorce and the prophet liked Zainab but he felt that Quraish and people there will embarrased him because he will marry the divorced wife of his adopted son, so God obelished the first thing which is adoption and then made the woman valid for being married with the prophet because after all Zaid was not his son and the woman is Hallal for him to marry her.

                          It is only Bukhari and company speaking through Reformer. No such thing is mentioned in the Qur'aan. Something contrary to it is mentioned and exposed by Allah.

                                    This " But thou didst hide in thy heart that which Allah was about to make manifest thou didst fear the people" has been misinterpreted to be that the prophet had feelings for her when what it means is what was about to be made manifest was that it is legal to marry the divorced wife of your adopted son, which the Arabs at that time would have said was wrong!!

                                    is that what you're saying Mazhar??

                                      Ayisha! I am so pleased, may Allah and His Messenger be very happy with you. It is just wonderful understanding. The story of feelings for her in the presence of his emphatic advice to retain the wife and to be mindful and cautious of Allah was concocted by Munafiqeen who have ill feelings in the heart of their heart and expose it under cover of such deliberate misinterpretations.

                                        so glad I started looking on this forum more bravo

                                          Thanks Aiysha . You may have noticed that Allah keeps negating and explaining how abhorring is this allegation/utterence of some people "Ar Rehman has adopted a son", whereas on face value it may look an ordinary assertion of not much import. But what is not stated yet incorporated in this utterence is of far more serious nature and allegations.

                                          In the like manner the hadith literature was fabricated by Munafiqeen in such manner that on appearance it conveys some thing but what is hidden is of far more dirty nature, this is how they appeased their negative sentiments which they nurtured in envy of the Messenger of Allah.
