Camel Urine: Maybe it shouldn't be laughed at?
-
A lot of people laugh about the hadiths that involve the benefits of digesting camel's urine. I used to be one of them...
The hadiths claim that camel's urine can cure an upset stomach. At first it seems like an absurd claim... But then when you really think about it, almost every over-the-counter drug that's in the drug store is a homeopathic remedy. The hadiths never claim that camel's urine is the BEST THING IN THE WORLD to cure an upset stomach, but that it helps. Considering the fact that Bedouin caravan travelers and such didn't have much to chose from in terms of homeopathic options most of the time (unless they wanted to eat sand... LOL), I am sure that camel urine was a "well researched" homeopathic cure even before Muhammad.
Considering that sometimes camel's dont drink for up to 2 weeks at a time, it's pretty obvious that their urine would contain lots of "stuff" (mostly dead cells, salts, hormones, etc). I am not sure whether camel's urine is normally acidic or basic, but you can bet that the effect of the pH level of the urine to your stomach would have SOME sort of effect on your stomach.. I mean.. You take antacids to settle your stomach down nowadays. Antacids are bases or "basic salts".. Therefor my guess is that if camel urine is indeed basic, it could help settle down a stomach.
My conclusion is that I'm sure camels urine is full of tons of stuff that could effect the stomach / gastrointestinal tract, and the idea shouldn't be laughed at simply because it "sounds funny". Almost every single medicine we have in the world is derived from an animal or plant.
Here's a PUBLISHED MEDICAL PAPER at the National Institute of Health, detailing the cytotoxic effect of Camel Urine
http//www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8771453
It says in the abstract
Camel urine treatment was found to cause a significant cytotoxic effect in the bone marrow cells of mice. This cytotoxicity at higher doses was comparable with that of standard drug cyclophosphamide (CP). However, unlike CP, the camel urine treatment failed to induce any clastogenicity. The cytotoxicity induced by camel urine treatment was substantiated by the reduction of liver nucleic acids and glutathione levels and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in the same animals. CP treatment was found to be highly clastogenic, cytotoxic and it reduced the levels of nucleic acids, proteins, glutathione and increased malondialdehyde concentration due to its prooxidant nature. The non-clastogenic nature of camel urine was attributed to the antioxidant and antimutagenic compounds present in camel urine. Pretreatment with camel urine increased the cytotoxicity of CP and intensified the CP induced reduction of liver nucleic acids, glutathione and increased the MDA concentration. The increase of CP induced cytotoxicity appears to be partly due to the additive effect of the two treatments on cellular lipid peroxidation.
I found one article which claims that camel's urine injected into mice infected with leukemia cells, which states it kills them and helps cure the cancer
http//www.saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentID=2009071143333I found some interesting information about the history of medicinal uses of urine on a website
The history of drinking urine for therapeutic purposes dates back at least to the Holy Roman Empire when great urinal troths were erected in the public squares of each city-state for residents to both contribute to, and benefit from. For centuries European Gypsies have known about the curative properties of urine, using cow urine to cure Bright's Disease (several acute and chronic diseases of the kidneys which produce albumin in urine). It has also been reported that the Yogis and Lamas of Tibet reach extended ages by drinking their own urine.
Through the ages there have been literally thousands of champions of this curious practice In the early 1800s, a book titled One Thousand Notable Things describes the use of urine to cure scurvy, relieve skin itching, cleanse wounds, and many other treatments. An 18th century French dentist praised urine as a valuable mouthwash. In England during the 1860-70s, the drinking of one's own urine was a common cure for jaundice. In more modern times, the Alaskan Eskimos have used urine as an antiseptic to treat wounds.
Horse Urine as a Western Cure
The popular estrogen product called PREMARIN is given to postmenopausal women. This PREMARIN is extracted from HORSE URINE. The name stands for PREgnant MARe urIN. Premarin, has become the third most prescribed drug in the world (just behind Tylenol).
Recent Proof?
Scientists from the United Arab Emirates have proposed using one of the world's hardiest mammals - the camel - in the campaign to fight and eradicate human diseases. A team led by Dr Sabah Jassim from the Zayed Complex for Herbal Research and Traditional Medicine has suggested that camels are highly resistant to many deadly viral diseases and their antibodies could be used for new drugs.
Camels have a unique physiology which allows them to thrive in some of the world's harshest environments. But as well as these advantages, they have immune systems that are so robust, they remain free from many of the viral diseases that affect other mammals, such as foot-and-mouth and rinderpest.
The antibodies that camels carry inside them are structurally much simpler than those of humans, and Dr Sabah Jassim suggests they would be much simpler to replicate artificially than human antibodies. Writing in the British Institute of Biology's magazine, The Biologist, Dr Jassim says the small size of camel antibodies would also allow them to penetrate deep into human tissue and cells that would not be otherwise accessible. - By BBC correspondent David Bamford http//news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1702393.stm
A researcher from a teaching hospital in the Sudan presented a study of 30 patients with ascites -- an accumulation of serum in the abdominal cavity that causes distended stomachs -- that found that they responded slightly better to 150 ml of camel urine a day than to a standard medicine, the diuretic frusimide. And a Chinese pharmaceutical company reported that in a clinical study, its urine-derived cancer drug CDA-II cured 61 percent of patients, compared with a 30 percent cure rate for chemotherapy.
Recent News in the Urine/Medical Issue
In New York City, alternative health guru Gary Null has devoted several segments of his popular radio program on WBAI (99.5 FM, 12 noon, Monday through Friday) to extolling the benefits of the urine cure.
According to Dr. Beatrice Bartnett in her pamphlet, Urine-Therapy It May Save Your Life "morning urine is the richest and best urine to drink, partially due to the greater level of hormonal secretion that takes place in the late night hours when the body is totally relaxed and repairing itself."
While many people are aware that Gandhi drank his urine, few know that leather-clad rocker Jim Morrison began the practice of drinking his urine while on an LSD-induced spiritual quest in the Mojave Desert. One of the more famous modern day cases involves movie star Steve McQueen, who, it is said, in the last stages of cancer, survived solely on a diet of urine and boiled alligator skin prescribed by his Mexican doctors.
An enterprising young company has come up with a way to trap medically powerful proteins from urine. Enzymes of America has designed a special filter that collects important urine proteins, and these filters have been installed in all of the men's urinals in the 10,000 portable outhouses owned by the Porta-John company, a subsidiary of Enzymes of America.
Indian yogis reportedly have been drinking their urine as a cure for more than 5,000 years. More than 600 scientists gathered in Goa, India, for the first World Conference on Auto-Urine Therapy in February 1996. Some proponents in attendance believe human urine can treat everything from baldness to cancer and AIDS. The use of urine as a topical rub and drink not only is common in India, but also in Japan and Germany and a growing number of countries. At least two books, "The Golden Fountain The Complete Guide to Urine Therapy," by Coen van der Kroon, and "Your Own Perfect Medicine," by Martha Christy, provide more info on "Urine-Therapy".
The Second World Conference on Urine Therapy, held last month in Gersfeld, Germany. There, in a tiny resort two hours outside Frankfurt, the Nicholses and 250 other health enthusiasts -- several dozen with M.D. after their names -- from more than 40 countries spent four days debating, discussing and charting the future of one of the world's oldest but least respected healing arts.

Great. So have you practised it yourself?

I've never even seen a camel. Maybe if you want to mail me some P
I was just saying that the idea isn't completely absurd... It makes logical sense that the urine would have SOME kind of effect, either positive or negative. Considering nothing in the urine is digestable, it would probably sooth the intestines.
At a bare minimum, it would clear your stomach from all the contents.... Because you would probably puke it all up LOL

Dear Seattle
First, Even if Muhammad, as an Arab living 1400 years ago, had adviced it to his peers, camel's urine has nothing to do with islam.
Second, Its was most likely in use by Arabs long before Muhammad.
Third, Almost anything could help something. Eat dirt, you may get some worm with rich protein in addition to iron. If you are anemic than you can claim the great miraculous cure in eating dirt.
Fourth, Eating shit is not yet recommended by a doctor for most people; at least I have not yet read or heard about it (Check the Internet and you may find a few articles praising its health benefits). If you knew the number of published medical papers and the subjectivity and complexity of medical research, you would not be surprised to read many contradictory claims on health and medicine.
Fifth, There are hundreds of fruits and herbs, with so many health benefits, it is a wonder to see the camel's milk on top of the short list of Sunnis.
Sixth, I like your open-mindedness, but too much openness will not hold your 3.5-pound grey jellyPeace,

Peace Edip.
I agree on all your points. It has nothing to do with Islam, that's for sure.. I just thought it was interesting because first I laughed at the claim (as I've seen others here do), but upon further thinking it made more sense.
I doubt the hadith in question are even authentic (especially the part about branding their eyes with heated iron)... Like I said in my original post it was probably "well researched" hundreds of years before Muhammad ever lived, considering they only had about 3 homeopathic options on long journeys camel milk, camel urine, or camel stool.

Hello,
You may want to check - amaroli.
Or Urine therapy.
It is golden elixir. Nothing to be laughed at.

For me it depends on my enviornment and situation.
If I am in a Metropolitan area or a place where other natural remedies are readily available, I will choose those.
But If I was in a Major rural desert area and needed it to survive or to help me, I would utilize the cammel pee. D
Speaking about Camels and being stuck in the Desert....If you were Stranded in the desert and a Sandstrom was about to hit you...where would be the most Ideal place to seek Refuge? !

Holy Bhagavad Gita
920
Those who study the Vedas and drink the soma juice, seeking the heavenly planets, worship Me indirectly. Purified of sinful reactions, they take birth on the pious, heavenly planet of Indra, where they enjoy godly delights.

Urine has an incredibly high phosphorus content.
Phosphorus is, of course, used to make detergents...If you leave a jar of cat pee on a shelf... it will start glow, after awhile.

Do you think phosphorus would calm a stomach?

If it has got nothing to do with Islam, then why this alleged statement is in the so-called book of Islam???
People are in fact, doing Personality-Worshipping.
They are not obeying,-----but worshipping the Messenger (SAW).
They are worshipping the names Abu Bakar, Umar, Usman, Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, Hussain, Abu Huraira, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abdullah ibn Masood, Abdullah ibn Abbaas, etc.
They, rever, remember, adore,---and eventually end up worshipping these names of the family members of the Prophet and the Sahaba of the Prophet, whereas these names are not in Allah's Quran.Allah Himself didn't Will us to know these names of the Sahaba, because people start worshipping these names and whatever lie and falsehood is linked with these names, they take it as Deen, out of their reverance for these non-Quranic names.
Right from the beginning, people have always been running away from Allah,---and worshipping the names of the previous pious people.
Whenever the Messengers came, they called people to Worshipping and Serving Allah, by following His Sayings (Revelations).
