What about non-Muslims that believe in God?

I have a question, as Muslims we believe in God and Islam as our way of life. But what about the people who believe in God, but their life path has not taken them to Islam are we to consider them as non-believers? I believe not everyone has had the opportunity (not sure if opportunity is the right word) to become Muslim, so they still believe in God and God only, does it make it not right? Just curious on what others think, as this topic confuses me.

If you notice the ayah above, the word 'our paths' in plural. There are a multitude of paths to God, quranically speaking.

I have written an essay on this subject, where I have come to the conclusion that Islam in the Qur'an refers to peace and wellbeing with all existence, this means both God and the creation
"The word al-Din has several meanings depending on the context. In pre-Islamic Arabic it was used mostly for custom, habit, debt, obligation, requital and obedience. It was used for a habitual state that kept returning, so that it could become a custom, and thus became an authority which was obeyed. It probably had several original Semitic sources, as Persians used it for systematic religion, Jews for requital, and Arabs for custom. The Arabs used it for example for rain that always fell at a particular place.
The Qur?an rejects exclusivist religious thought, the idea that only one religion with its specific dogmatism and labels will gain you salvation. The Qur?an shows development is based on a few very rational and universal concepts

And they claim, "None will enter Paradise unless he is a Jew or a Christian." This is nothing but their wishful thinking. Say, "Bring your proof if you are truthful." No, whosoever inclines to peace with his whole being for God (aslama wajhahu lillahi), while being a person who improves the state of mankind (muhsinun); he will have his reward with his Developer. There will be no fear over them, nor will they grieve.
The verb aslama has many applications. In pre-Islamic Arabic usage, it referred to giving over or to incline to something that makes something safe or pure, or to act peacefully or safely with yourself, a product, or someone else. It meant to being something or give over something precious to you or to someone else, and you or that person, will keep it safe as salama refers to safety, wholeness and health. The root word goes as far back as 4000 years ago, where it was used in the Proto-Semitic Akkadian language (2000 BCE) for to be unharmed, peace, well-being and welfare. The word wajhahu comes from wajooh, face, which represents a person?s whole being. Thus aslama wajhahu lillahi means to give over your whole being in the struggle for peace for God (you do not endanger or waste God?s creation), and you keep yourself and your surroundings safe and healthy.
Al-Islam is a verbal noun in the Arabic form of If3l. yulim informs, is the verb form IV and the verbal noun in form IV is i3lam information. As the root verb salama means peace and well-being, then al-Islam is the performing/having of peace and well-being. (form IV) which refers to the performing of the root meaning described in a noun.
The medieval scholar Raghib Isfahani explains in his Qur'anic concordance that al-Islam means
The engagement/entering (al-Dukhulu) into (fi) the Peace (al-Silm).

Religion/DEEN is nothing but one?s LIFESTYLE. The way we spend our lifetime from the time we wake up from our daily rest to the time we go back to sleep again. This sounds a bit weird of a definition, but something to think about.
Islam, on the other hand, is the NAME of a certain and SPECIFIC lifestyle. The said lifestyle, i.e., ISLAM, has been defined throughout The Qur?aan in detail. See 2177 for full definition.
According to The Qur?aan, we are responsible for our ACTIONS only, during our life of this world.
According to The Qu?aan, whosoever that believes in GOD, THE LAST DAY, and leads a RIGHTEOUS, constructive LIFESTYLE, should not be fearful of anyone or get sad about anything. See 262 and 569.
Saying all that, and after all, the ultimate judgment belongs to GOD Himself. Our only responsibility toward our fellow humans is just to promoting virtue and preventing from vice, only when possible in a peaceful manner. See 3104.

It's only a contradiction because you refuse to explain the word 'islam'. You think Islam is something you OWN. When Allah says 'inna ad-deena inda Allahi al-islam', you think He's only talking about you and the 'majority'. THATS why you see a contradiction.
Islam is a universal principle which belongs to whoever practises that principle. It's got nothing to do with rituals or dogma.

Why follow the Quran? Why not follow the Jewish, Christian and Sabian way as salvation shall be obtained either way in line with ayat 262. Heck, why even have a Free-Minds website, because does it not defeat the object of Quran Alone when we can all be part of the ayat 262?

Zulu, the problem is you think Islam as its known in the world is the 'islam' found in the quran. It so is NOT.
3/85 harmonises well with 2/62 and 5/69 if u can get past this 'we are the only Islam' mindset.

2135 AND THEY say, "Be jews" - or, "Christians" - "and you shall be on the right path." Say "Nay, but the creed of Abraham, who turned away from all that is false, and was not of those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God."

2120 For, never will the jews be pleased with thee. nor yet the Christians, unless thou follow their own creeds. Say "Behold, God's guidance is the only true guidance." And, indeed, if thou shouldst follow their errant views after all the knowledge that has come unto thee. thou wouldst have none to protect thee from God, and none to bring thee succour.

Because "islam" literally means "surrender" to the will of God, in English.
(I am careful to say "in English" because this original Arabic isn't like English... it doesn't use punctuation and caps in the English sense. Words are like sand.... spiraling from and around their source.)There is, it would seem, then... more than one way to surrender to God's will, if Christians, Sabians & Jews are all welcome in Prophet's kingdom.
