I think you could say 'shy' as well as 'modest'
Modest gaze means looking but not staring, looking out the corner of the eye, not a full LOOK, kind of 'shy' 'modest'

Before I go off and get my digging spade to pick apart the verses I will say this
- I have just woken up so bear with me as everything I say will be debatable
- This question usually comes from men or from those that assume men are to get the 72 'ripe voluptuous' virgins in heaven.
The thing that struck me most in reading these verses is the eyes. Allah makes a thing about these wide beautiful black eyes.
The translations range from servants to wives, I think Asad says they were your wives before but from what I get in reading is they are 'heavenly' companions, so never been anywhere else, untouched etc. I am in doubt that you get many though, you may only get one as the verses say 'matching' or 'joining' with you which implies one each, so not the 72 ;D
I am rather inclined to think that as God knows what men are like while alive then His description of heaven will be something that is sought after by men. Personally I dont think there will be any 'of that' in heaven as we wont carry over the 'desire' which is an earthly bodily function. So these virgins will stay virgins, because virginity is only a 'one go' thing anyway. (unless they have hymen reconstruction automatic there). soooo, I think they are 'companions' to 'serve' you with the drink and lovely fruits it also mentions and finally man will have one woman that 'adores' him and looks at no one else. I think these are heavenly creatures.
As for what will women get, well we dont quite think the same as men do although 5617 does mention youthful boys with those eyes too. I will be quite happy sprawled on the lovely couches watching the stream and someone bring me a coffee and some toast occassionally, I would pass on the virgins for a bacon butty peace

That's actually kinda scary. I once played this game called Buck Rogers, it had these aliens with soulless big black eyes. Never really forgotten the chills that gave me, even in 32 bit.I surely won't say no to that! I want to experience all the things I can't do here, I want to see the progression of the world and then control it playing different scenarios to see the outcome, I want to know everything by learning, not some mystical data dump in my brain immediately and I'm uh, neutered...like choose a subject and spend eons with brilliant (okay they don't have to be good looking) teachers and feel this sense of achievement and then I move on to the next and so on. There's just so much I want to do and I don't want to be emotionless.

I have often wondered how long it would take me to get bored stiff with reclining and eating and drinking and wondered if all the information of 'God the universe and everything' will just be dumped in my head and I will know it without the fun process of learning it. after all eternity is a long time. I've been in "eternity" psychedelically speaking and as soon as I entered that state the first thought was "damn, I want this for eternity", it didn't get boring the other 60 times either D. Remember that the emotion of "boredom" is only a switch in the brain.
Also I doubt girls think differently to boys, if they thought any different we wouldn't be here p

Then again, I'm too much of a control freak to ever "let myself go" purposely, I start getting scared at the thought of events beyond my control, fear of the unknown, heck sometimes just thinking about the process of dying has me curled up in a fetal position.
