Is Iddat ( waiting period ) still applies to women now?

The waiting period of women after divorce/death of husband is 3-4 months and i case a woman is pregnant then it is till delivery of the baby. I have heard scholars saying that it was to make sure if the woman was pregnant or not. But this is 21st century and we can easily find about the pregnancy without having to wait for 4 months.So is iddat still applicable to women now ?
If yes what are women even required to do ? In my family the women are being locked in a room for 4/9 months. They aren't at all allowed to come out especially if there's a non mehram. They hardly even go out of the house unless it's really important. ( I dont know if it's a sunni practice or not ). What are the dos and donts of iddat ?
