how would you translate 6:163

Salam, Peace all,
how would you translate AWAL (=first) in 6163
FM translation 6163 He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have submitted.
Yusuf Ali No partner hath He this am I commanded, and I am the first of those who bow to His Will
Pickthal He hath no partner. This am I commanded, and I am first of those who surrender (unto Him).
Shakir No associate has He; and this am I commanded, and I am the first of those who submit.
Thanks for your help

Peace and salam to all,
here is my rendering
614
Yusuf Ali
Say "Shall I take for my protector any other than Allah, the Maker of the heavens and the earth? And He is that feedeth but is not fed." Say "Nay! but I am commanded to be the first of those who bow to Allah (in Islam), and be not thou of the company of those who join gods with Allah."FM
Say Shall I take other than God as an ally; the initiator of the heavens and the earth; while He feeds and is not fed! Say I have been commanded to be the first who submits. And do not be of the polytheists.innee omirtu an akoona awwala man aslama
This is a very close formula used in 6163
In the first verse 614 the word ASLAMA is used "I am the first one who ASLAMA"
I would translate ASLAMA by "to make peace"This make sense when reading the context of surat 6, please read the entire surat.
My conclusion is AWAL is the "first" with the meaning the "one who make the first step" in this case to "peace".

Yusuf Ali
....." Say "Nay! but I am commanded to be the first of those who bow to Allah (in Islam),........."Certainly me, I was commanded that I become the first who accepted/submitted/surrendered".
Study of some other Verses 2285;10104;2791-92;3912;4066;4215 will InshahAllah will also help about this issue.

Salam,
if I read your translation I'll understand, the prophete is the first who submitted (if muslim means submitter), I don't think it is correct, what about the previous prophetes in that case?
My understanding is "the prophete is the first to make peace" v614, e.g. the context shows enemity against him because of what he was preaching, the right behaviour is to let them do and you first make peace so there is no "doubt" neither room for the ennemies to act as they do.
Peace

Dear Herbman,
Your intentions are quite appreciable, in the backdrop of irrational and hostile conduct of some elements who proclaim to be muslims. Such instructions are at other places.
Here there is no mention, even by stretching and importing connotations attached to such words in different structures, of initiation of peace process. The verb "Aslama" is intransitive-and will only convey the perception and meanings of "to submit to a verdict/word-accept wholeheartedly".When some one accepts/submits/believes to a verdict/word/proclamation he becomes a Muslim. If we listen the SOS shouting call of Firaun at the time of his drowning, we may know its meanings;
