Why escape to a better life only to do this to your children?

I think there are plenty of converts who would have their children pulled from lessons. What's sad is that this got into a national paper and might prompt many parents to do the same.

Yup.
I originally was stressed out about what I was going to do with my kids (this was a few years ago, when I was in a Sunni-mindset) when it came to school - like I wouldn't want them drawing pictures, doing anything music-related, etc. etc. -
yeah sucks! i always wanted to learn to play the guitar, im now talentless (
I play guitar. Not even going to say I'm an excellent player, I'm not. I have no formal training and cannot read notes or anything like that. However I can play some things I hear by reproducing it on the guitar. Not everything though, some stuff is very difficult to play just by hearing it.
Anyways, if you have a passion for learning it along with the patience you can become decent. Even though I didn't do it, I would recommend you learn it formally. I.e. how to hold the guitar and bridge (this is actually very important) how to use your fingers when playing (very important as well, you will realize why when it comes time to playing difficult songs) and reading notes, and formal chords (A,B,C etc.) and not just ridiculously simple power chords

This is sad and sickening. Imho only people who have lost all connection with God and with their intuition can be brainwashed into believing that playing an instrument would be a sin.
nopeI used to play the piano and sadly had to stop due to not having enough space to put it and also because I was moving back and forth between two countries for years. But I know at some point in the future I will definitely take it up again. )

This happened at an Islamic school end of year program. They have a special class for children with developmental disorders like autism, mild cerebral palsy, dyslexia etc. The teachers do a wonderful job with these children (aged between 4-. But at the end of year performance for parents, while all other classes sang and recited poems, this particular class used musical shakers for their turn (they are kind of like a less noisy rattle). Music/rhythm is very helpful for them. But it was considered a big no-no simply because a "musical instrument" (gasp horror) was used in an Islamic school. Now this is sad! I was utterly shocked that it was taken up as an issue.
