Iran cleric says dogs "unclean", not to be kept as pets
Sat Jun 19, 2010 306pm IST(Reuters) - A senior Iranian cleric has decreed dogs are "unclean" and should not be kept as pets -- a move aimed at discouraging Western-style dog ownership in the Islamic state, a newspaper reported on Saturday.
Dogs are considered "unclean" under Islamic tradition but, while relatively rare in Iran, some people do keep them as pets.
By issuing a fatwa -- a religious ruling -- Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has sent a clear message that this trend must stop.
"Friendship with dogs is a blind imitation of the West," he was quoted as saying in Javan daily. "There are lots of people in the West who love their dogs more than their wives and children."
Guard dogs and sheep dogs are considered acceptable under Islamic law but Iranians who carry dogs in their cars or take them to public parks can be stopped by police and fined.
The Koran does not explicitly prohibit contact with dogs, Shirazi said, but Islamic tradition showed it to be so. "We have lots of narrations in Islam that say dogs are unclean."
The interpretation of religious rules on personal conduct is a constant source of debate and potential conflict in Iran which has been an Islamic republic since a revolution ousted the Western-backed Shah in 1979.
In a television interview last week, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad weighed in on the issue of the Islamic dress code, saying women who fail to cover their hair completely should not be harassed by the police.
Morality police are conducting their annual crackdown and women who reveal strands of hair are liable to be stopped in the streets for failing to respect the dress code, or "hijab".
Ahmadinejad's surprisingly liberal view was condemned by fellow hardliner politicians and senior clerics "I wish he had not said those words about the hijab," Grand Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati told the faithful during the week's Friday prayers, in a rare criticism of the president.
"We are grappling with many problems including economic and political ones but the issues of morality and ethical security are among the important issues that cannot be ignored," he said.
Tehran University has set up a thinktank "to investigate the problems related to hijab", the representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to the university announced on Monday.

So they have very serious economic and political problems, but women's clothing is one of the most important ones.

Respect.I had a dog when I was a kid.
Just one advice get a small dog.
One of those that don't grow.
It's easy tot ake care of them, to feed them.....trust me.God knows best.

Peace.i took my friends dog for a walk yesterday shes got a jack russell terrier, hes pretty small but the most excitable dog in the world. his bark is bigger than his bite and himself three times over! wasnt that easy to take care of him.
btw, any one of u here have dogs as pet? been thinking about having a dog, maybe a siberian husky! ;D
siberian huskys are so dam beautiful! but im more of a springer spaniel lover

Dalia, It depends on your lifestyle and what you are looking for from a dog. It really depends on the dog. No two dogs are alike. As an example, I have worked with German shepherds who just weren't very smart. And this is a breed of acute intelligence.
Huskies are gorgeous, but have very high energy. Not sure if they are the best If you live in the city. They require lots of exercise due to their high level energy (iirc, huskies could walk for a week without food/water) and have a mind of their own; very stubborn. Not recommended for first time owners. Some info here
They also 'talk' a lot (not bark, but howl etc). Jackies are craaazy. Be preprared to do jumping jacks along with them.
Small dogs yap too much for my taste.

Rotties and Great Danes are more my thing. Also like German Boxers.

I love Great Danes. ) Many years ago, when I just started university, I was doing an internship in an advertising agency and they had one of those. Walking him every morning was part of my duties, lol.

Respect.Well, if you got the time, get many dogs and get any size you want, but living in the city means sacrifice.
My grandfather had a dog and when I wanted to take him for a walk, they all looked at me like i'm from Saturn or something.
Dogs are free in the village.Anyway, stick with a tank fish, ;D

I read somewhere that dogs will compete for being the leader of the pack which they consider the family, and if the owner/etc is meek, they're essentially not going to be respected. Rather get a cat, who occasionally looks your direction but leaves you be to sun in the sun the rest of the time. No walks, no fetch, no slobber, no baths, no barks. Bliss.

My cat would try to drive me insane when he wanted attention and I had no time for him. I would sit at the computer and try to work, and he would run through the apartment screaming, scratching the Persian carpet and so on. So, no, cats aren't only decorative and cuddly. ;D

Mine are both Maine Coon's. Excellent breed, huge like a small dog, very silky soft fur, good with kids and best of all...quiet companions. They'll follow you around sometimes, they want to sit in the same vicinity etc but don't ask for attention. Quiet voices too, can never hear them unless it's time for dinner or they've spotted a bird and start trilling...awesome mousers as well as a bonus. -

100% true. It's for the good of the family. A survival instinct. A weak leader cannot be respected/trusted. Only the strong survive. That being said, once the human becomes a good leader, they will respect, be loyal to him/her 'till death.
I prefer dogs because I actually 'get' their logic. Plus, they've taught me a lot about the universal language of energy that we all speak fluently, consciously or subconsciously. Further, they make such wonderful companions. Every dog owner will swear that their dog has the personality to die for.
