    Hi everyone,

Well, this is exciting! I had no idea until this evening that not only was there a term for us - 'Quranites', but even better, that it there was even an 'us' at all! I thought I was alone in applying myself to the blessed Qur'an exclusively.

My conversion story is a relatively simple one. Despite enjoying 'comparative religion' over the years, I considered myself an agnostic. I had also never gotten around to reading the Qur'an, as I had no real interest in (what I thought was) Islam. A few months ago I met a Muslim work colleague who gave me a copy of the Qur'an after we had some interesting discussions about his faith. Although I only read it out of curiousity, it changed everything; I literally read and believed. Something deep and fundamental changed in me. I can't really explain or articulate it as well as I wish I could.

There were a couple of elements which didn't seem consistent with the essence of the Qur'an, which I discovered to be issues with translating Arabic into English (eg. "Kital" being wrongly translated into "Slay" or "Kill", when "combat" or "mortal combat" seems more accurate, and gives a completely different context).

It's also an understatement to say that I was and continue to be quite shocked at the difference between what's in the Qur'an - such a beautiful gift to humanity - and what's being passed off as Islam. I cannot believe just how much of the latter essentially constitutes cultural baggage mixed with Hadiths, and containing so many elements which not only aren't even in the Qur'an, but even completely contradict it! And finding out that there are a lot of Muslims who haven't read the Qur'an at all, or who recite it in Arabic, and yet don't know what the words/sounds mean. But these are different topics.

Anyway, I'm glad to continue to be guided on the right path, into true Islam, and am certainly looking forward to discussing things with like-minded brothers and a sisters. Peace be upon you all.

          Peace Khalil,
Welcome to the forum. Remember to be patient when learning about the topics in the Quran. There are some good tools at http//www.studyquran.co.uk/

In particular I like these two tools in combination.

http//corpus.quran.com/ - It helps if you learn about the Classical Arabic root system before using this tool.
http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm - Best classical Arabic dictionary source I've found so far.

            Peace to all,

Welcome to the forum Khalil, its great to read your story as it reminds me of my conversion, the first time i ever prayed as a muslim I had the words written down in arabic and english and I recited them, but when I got to the Muhammad is the messenger part I couldnt say it, this is before i even heard of Quran alone Islam, it was just instinctive that it didnt seem right to pray that part. As i researched and taught myself I found this sight, been over 5 years now and im still a practicing "muslim", hope to hear more from you.

It seems another "wow" is in order! Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming, and for providing some excellent research materials and resources sun

I've still got a looooong way to go in terms to studying and contemplating the Qur'an, to truly understand everything so I can and live it sincerely. And this is something I'm ecstactic about. To that end, learning Arabic and hopefully memorising the Qur'an itself are also goals. From what little I know so far, the truth of Islam is clearly the Qur'an alone, and I am grateful for The Beneficient's guidance and mercy in leading me to and keeping me on the straight path.

As for using the term "Quranite" or "Quranist", of course I don't mean to introduce any kind of notion of a particular sect or such. We are simply Muslims, and the false nature of schisms and those who propagate them are outlined in the Qur'an (a surprise and a delight). However, given that the term "Muslim" is commonly used to refer to those who believe in and practice non-Quranic materials and traditions, I believe it's important to differentiate ourselves in respect of our sole term of reference as Muslims God's word, and God's word alone. But only in that respect.

Incidentially, I had a very interesting discussion/debate of sorts with a group of Sunni Muslims at work yesterday. There were some quite animated (though still friendly) and shocked reactions when I raised the issue of referring to the Qur'an alone, without the Hadiths and the Sunnah. They honestly could not comprehend or entertain the notion of understanding or practicing the Qur'an without these references. Along with some other thoughts and experiences, I hope to put this into a seperate post. However, I suspect it will be best to keep my thoughts to myself in public as some reactions may not be so friendly.

Once again, thanks for the great replies! peace
