Evil Eye

I have a question regarding the "evil eye," or what is known as "hasad."
I have recently met a very nice girl who married my cousin. She is friendly, warm, kind and basically has all the qualities you would want in a friend. We quickly became close and used to spend a lot of time together. However, I noticed that every time she complimented me about something I own or have, something would go wrong with it. I know that the evil eye is mentioned in the Koran but I didn't pay much attention to it before. I always found people who blamed everything on it as a bit silly and unable to take personal blame for their problems. Therefore, this was actually the first time I feel that someone has it. The coincidences have been too many for me to think that these things went wrong just after I told that girl.
Finally, I took a mutual friend aside and asked her if she feels the same way about the girl. She told me that yes this girl has the evil eye and that she didn't want to tell me because we are such good friends. I asked her if she thinks maybe we are unfair and these are just random things that happened and she said what I said which is that these coincidences have been too many.
Anyway, I just want to ask several questions regarding the evil eye.- Why would God give someone the power to affect another person so negatively? I mean the effect of the evil eye should not be underestimated.
- My mother said that the evil eye happens not when you want something the other person has, but rather you want that person to lose it. For example, if I like my cousin's hair and want my hair to be like her, that's not the evil eye. But to want her to lose her hair aka "zawal el naema," is the evil eye. Is that true?
- That girl I talked about is very kind and sweet, so how could she be so nice and yet have something as horrible as the "evil eye."?

Lots of people have "hasad" i don't think it turns them into super humans who have abilities to ruin everything they speak of. that would be kinda scary.
Hasad is like envy but it's well an evil type. similar to what your mother said, wishing a person loses something or not wishing good for someone, not accepting their achievements etc being envious of them. one could envy another and desire and work to it, but if one was to desire and wish others against what they have etc that would be hasad afaik.
There is 1 i know of, seeking refuge from evil

where I live giving compliments is seen in a positive way - being nice. I give and receive compliments all the time. No evil eye here. The evil eye is when someone acts on their jealousy doing you harm.

Respect.I'm not sure this can be attributed to the evil eye but is it possible that maybe you're dealing with the power of suggestion?
I mean, power of suggestion can sometimes be more then just simple words or mere suggestions.

Here in Egypt this is very much believed and before I actually lived here I thought it was just superstition, it's not. People can have the evil eye without even wanting to or realizing it, apparently.
A friend of mine took in a sick cat and nursed it to health, another friend of hers was visiting one day and remarked on how healthy the cat was looking, next day cat broke its leg.
There are people here in upper Egypt that still use black magic and spells on people, and it works, you dont have to know about it so its not suggestion.
I think the evil eye is to do with negative energy that is strong and directed towards someone or something. Confused, you should talk to the girl as if shes as nice as you think she is she needs to be aware of this so she may be able to do something about it.

aiyesha, if that is the case why doesn't it happen here in US? the mexican, asian population also are into this evil eye. when i see a white or black baby, i compliment on how cute the baby is and i don't see anything happening to white or black american babies. almost every day, i am giving compliment about something - how young a person looks to the outfit they are wearing, etc. people also give me compliments. black eye is culture dependent.

possibly yes, and possibly you dont have the evil eye so nothing happens when you compliment people.
believe me I laughed when i was told about 'bad eyes' as its called here, but after living here I dont laugh now. My husband is the cup winner for a Luxor football team, he's a great player now but was the best a few years ago. Someone known to have 'bad eyes' complimented him, he broke his leg in the next game.
I'm not saying everyone who compliment is like this but I do believe it.
If you have never visited Upper Egypt, especially the West Bank of Luxor, ancient Thebes, then you have not experienced the 'vibe' like there is here. Many 'have' to live here once they have been, its got an energy you cannot describe and it's not entirely 'good'. This place attracts many 'spiritual' people, people that use 'energy' related healings like Reiki, use of crystals, all those kind of people 'feel' it. There are probably more Reiki Masters and practitioners in Luxor per square mile than anywhere else ;D

My take
- "Evil Eye" is certainly a superstition.
- It sprung from a 'habit' of 'trying to blame someone or something for the mishappening that we endure'.
I think the discussion missed the point.
The most important thing is actually
- NOT TO BE ENVIOUS TO OTHER PEOPLE.
- DO NOT BLAME OTHER PEOPLE FOR YOUR MISHAP.
- BE POSITIVE NO MATTER WHAT HAPPEN.

ok let's talk about the last two chapters of the Koran. here's my take on it.
Sura 113
ayat 1 indicates what kind of refuge we are seeking. I seek refuge in my Lord who created or owner of dawn - 'morning' as the sun opens up. I seek my Lord - of that light that cuts through the clutter, evil and reaches something that is good.
ayat 2 this verse is a general statement of what I am seeking refuge from. God did not create evil. He created things. And it is people's actions or interactions that create evil. And I seek refuge from harm of those creatures.
ayat 3 is specific case of ayat #2. the last word in that aya 'wakab' can relate to society/mankind. Ignorance, denial, disbelief, desires can cloud our judgments. I seek refuge in God from the "evil that covers over". I seek refuge in God from those things that cloud my judgment.
ayat 4 another specific case of ayat #2. can be taken in literal sense or idiomatic expression. "hookath" could also mean confusion. I seek refuge in God from people who increase my confusion or make me stay in that state of confusion. (I have never come across a sorcerer but am surrounded with people who can tie me up in knots so to speak and some do it quite well by using the Koran itself in increasing my confusion and trying to keep me in that state. I seek refuge in God from people like that).
ayat 5 another specific case of ayat #2. it is not the jeolous people that I seek refuge from. It is the evil from the person who is jealous and act out on their feelings.
Well, that's my take on Sura 113. When time allows will share my take on Sura 114. From my understanding, God doesn't tell me to seek refuge from for example a woman who said the jacket that I was trying looked good on me. God does tell me to seek refuge in Him from coworkers/friends/family especially and also strangers who might be envious of me and act on their feelings.
Sura 113 is a great chapter to recite first thing in the morning as I start my day.

from my understanding these can be the same thing. Energy is a very powerful thing, the entire universe is run on it including us. An action is not necessarily physical action.Sura 113 is a great chapter to recite first thing in the morning as I start my day.
Yes, to guard you against seen and unseen and the ones who 'practice' envy. Envy is an emotion, not an action. Emotions can create very strong energy.
