Oh, and btw. ? high heels are also haram, of course!

Wearing high heels is not permissible because it exposes women to the risk of falling, and we are commanded in sharee?ah to avoid danger in a general sense, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning)

      ?And do not kill yourselves?

?and do not throw yourselves into destruction?

It also makes women look taller than they really are and makes their posteriors appear more prominent, and this is a kind of deception and showing the adornments which the believing woman is forbidden to show ?

Did nail polish existed in the present shape at time of prophet?

regarding the photographs they are from

A pair of students at American University of Beirut show off their nail polish. A leading ayatollah recently said Muslim women could pray without having to remove their nail polish. Credit Meris Lutz / Babylon & Beyond

from the same site which says
Shiite cleric Ayatollah Mohammad Fadlallah issued a fatwa allowing women to pray wearing nail polish.
He recently ruled that women are allowed to strike their husbands in self defense.(Good news ladies)

          Salaam bros n sistas,

Gr8 to hear all yer opinions...
Leyna n Mushu , neither of those beautiful women are my wives and I don't think my real wife finds your query/ comment amusing! lol ;D
Emil, glad to know we share something similar... giveup

Ok coming to the topic at hand, here's what I could find

Ofcourse there is no harm in applying lipstick and nail polish. Also, there is no harm in performing Salat while wearing them. But we keep hearing that the Fiq?h scholars have decreed that since water does not reach the lips and nails that are painted when performing Wudu, women have to remove it before performing a Wudu. They judge that otherwise the person?s prayer is deemed void.

There's just one simple question for all those muslims who oppose such a simple joy as ?nail-polish?

Why did the Prophet allow men to do wudu without removing their socks??

If water should really touch every place that we do the wudu(face, head, mouth, hands, feet) why is it taught in Sharia that the Prophet allowed men to wear even leather socks (khuffayn) and perform wudu. Think about it? It does seem foolish to imagine that a simple nail polish wud break someone's salat but wearing socks on the feet does not! Why the double-standard?

          http//www.islammonitor.org/uploads/pics/washshoe.jpg

Also, if it is soo important that water must touch ever part of your hand, how is it that both the Quran and hadiths instruct us to use dry sand if water is not available. (sura 56)

          Comeon hadithists, talk to me!

The above proof only shows without doubt that Allah almighty only wants us to be CLEAN one way or another when we are praying to Him. Blindly putting rules and giving fatwas concluding this is right and that is wrong does not make sense. There is absolutely no reason a nail polish should spoil a woman's prayer if she is washed and clean.

I guess what we must remind some muslims is that Islam is not a set of rules, but Allah?s blessing for mankind. Therefore His laws will always be accomodating of our needs and wants. Here are cases that clearly prove this point

          • In the case of lack of water, Tayamom is accepted. This would be using Sand to clean the body. But does that mean if there?s no water, one would put sand in the mouth and the nose to clean them? Ofcourse not.
But if we were to blindly follow the idea, this is what we would have been expected to do, right?

          • When a person FRACTURES an arm and has a cast on- it is sufficient to rub water on the cast not on the skin. The assumption here that the arm was clean when the cast was put on. Would you say that the person?s salat is wasted and that Allah will not accept becoz the patient did not wash with water?

          • Islam allows to rub water during wudu even on some specialized boots that were worn during the time of the Prophet. Again in this case, the foot is not washed becoz it is assumed that the feet were already cleaned earlier.

Thus we can safely conclude that the same has to apply in the case of women?s finger nails. If the hands were already clean when applying the polish, there is absolutely no reason for her to be worried about anything when performing wudu and preparing for salat the next time.

Infact I know of 'some' muslim women who look forward to those ?5 days of the month? so that they could go about applying make-up/nail polish without worries. Nobody will pressurise them during that period and none of their relatives at home will form judgements based on their appearance. Well , isn't it wierd that Islam would actually have laws that result in situations that make muslims looks forward NOT TO pray ? Allah is the Most Beneficient , Most Merciful and the Most Understanding? He certainly wants every muslim to look forward for prayer.

I?d like to conclude with the Sura 1736

?You shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for using them.?

Having said all that, I've still not been able to change my wife's views.... Hmmm... Since it doesn't affect me and it's up to her how she wants to carry herself, guess I'll just let it pass and let her be D

          peace to all!
          Harris

harris, I agree with everything you wrote. If the issue is being approached with some logic, the conclusion that doing wudu with nail polish invalidates prayer does not make any sense.

Islam dislikes this.. Islam accepts those.. Islam requires that... Islam...

Islam should be another thing than a belief..

                Salaams all )

It's so refreshing on here...people actually thinking, querying, using logic... bravo

I know Muslim women "who look forward to those ?5 days of the month? so that they could go about applying make-up/nail polish without worries" too, and yes it is strange.

                Ah, YES!!! rotfl

I can't believe the great point you made regarding the wiping over of sox Harris. I NEVER thought of that before....ever. But you are so right. It don't make sense no matter which way I look at it!

Leyna I love the points you made with regard to high heels and danger - teehee.

I found that funny too. ;D

The fatwa is from a Saudi sheikh. Given the circumstances in his own country, I guess he should better use those verses to forbid men from driving cars! I'm sure there are more people killing themselves through reckless driving than by wearing high heels.

That said, I see way more women with high heels here in Egypt than in my European homecountry. And they are usually combined with hijab. And, of course, nail polish. ;D

If that is not hoarding... the hoarding of absurdities...

There should be annual fairs with participation from all sides and all civilisation clashes to show and market all the forms of women conditionning and brainwashing that can be had- No self-respecting woman should go about without at least 10 fashion or doctrine or in whtever other way imposed forms of self inflicting harm. That should be our first and foremost right to a real good annual fair held in every country to pick the best self demeaning ways of womanhood. TV and magazines and fatwas are not enough. Please, give us more of those items and ways without which our existence cannot be forgiven.

                    Salaam

This is what gets me about my oh so pious hadith following hijabi friend who refuses to think, she feels relief when she gets those 'days off' from prayer or fasting ???

" I dont HAVE to pray for a few days"
