Why are there thinking like this?

Salam All,
This morning I had a debate with a Sunni Muslim who is also my friend (only two of us). I told him that there are many contradictions between hadith and the Quran. He denied it and when I proof my point he told me that he still belief the hadith is the one supposed to be followed. He also mentioned that why should I followed a minority when the majority of Muslim belief the hadith. When I quote him about the verse in the Quran saying that we should not follow the majority, he said that this verse is only valid during the time of prophet when the Muslim is minority. When I told him that we do not need the hadith because the Quran if fully detailed he replied ?Did the Quran teach us how to comb our hair and how to brush our teeth??
Why are there thinking like this? He is not uneducated person. He is a university graduate and a retired officer in one of the government department here. He prays five times a day, he fast and he belief that the Quran is word of God. He said that we are not supposed to read the Quran?s translation because once the Quran is read in other then Arabic language the meaning is different.

Your friend is not open minded.
you friend thinks like that because he is in denial. He doesnt want to go against what he have been believing for so long. it is hard for some people to accept the truth after believing falshood for so long.

Perhaps you can explain by saying the first descriptive word used for al quran (other than kitab/book/decree) is al hudan (the guidance), see 22. It is essentially a book of guidance. When al quran states it is fully detailed, it is referring to its role as a guide book. Knowing how to comb our hair or how to brush our teeth correctly has minimal impact on our guidance. Perhaps you can strike an analogy with a "how to" manual for a specific job (i.e. building a desk). The manual is fully detailed with respect to its goal, just like al quran.

but this argument is subjective because people select what can be classify as guidance. techinically, a instrustion on how to brush you teeth is guidance and can be classify as sipirtual guidance . Why? because it can be link to graditude with GOD by craing for the things he given you (including you teeth). Remember, all aspect of our life is important and curcial to our guidance.
that is why i dont follow or agree with the "koran only" argument, because it is fault and subjectively used. Dont get me wrong, i dont follow haidth as relgious laws because GOD baliantly said so. But i dont use the argument "the koran is fully-detialed" because it is very subjective.

glndcp, this is precisely the issue I face when I try to convince people into beilieving that yes, indeed the Koran is complete. I also add to this fact, another fact, which is that the Koran contains no NONSENSE such as telling us how to brush our hair and teeth.
God knows we know how to do these things. The Koran contains things that are necessary for our salvation and brushing hair is not a requirement for a peaceful hereafter.

It is hard to give up what you have thought was true for so long. Just remember to be patient with your friend. That is very important. Continue to show him/her the signs that we can find all throughout the universe that proves the truth.
Also, show him/her ALL of the verses that contain the word "hadith" in the reading(quran), especially the one that asks "which hadith after this will they follow?"
