Quran Study Group

Peace be upon you,
Yes, OQS was very, very, very helpful. I think we should duplicate the process with the group we have here. With this free minds forum and a study group fo rthe God's book, that should help us all. Does anyone know a good place to set this up?
-
Peace be upon you Marie,
I havent been there in a long time, I do not remember where it is found
-
Peace,
Sorry for a few days of silence but my computer caught a bug plus it needed updating and more memory (some watches had more memory then this poor thing!). Now it feels like typing on a space rocket )) What a difference!
Great that there is not only my humble self who is interested in the project ) With all the potential that is here on the forum I think the QSG may be very fruitful, God willing!
Sabo wrote
"I'd like even to suggest that a new forum category for this online study could be done."I agree. That would make the reference much easier! Hope Layth and others in charge can do some "harry potter" magic about it
I suggest putting it in a separate category, say Quran Study Group; then each sura would be a different topic, and within each topic/ sura, there would be different posts about each verse/ groups of verses. That would make things clear and user-friendly ) Of course, there should be a topic for general issues, not connected with a particular sura or Quranic term. In this such posts as these ones could be put in.

"When we take the order of the Quran as it is, its fine, but in some places there must be made reference to either later or ealier positions in the book, which clarify the context further."Agreed. Yet, when we start discussing we should, in my opinion, take the Quranic order as the major. Of course, references, forward and backword, will be unavoidable!
idolfree1 wrote
"PLEASE! PLEASE! include me in this study group when it is created."Dear idolfree, and all of you. Everyone is welcome to take part because I want it to be our shared effort! So feel free to discuss and explore the Quran and hope that in this way we all will benefit, God willing!
idolfree1 wrote
"Might I also add that everyone make a copy of this reading(quran) for themselves that they can change so that as we study, we will also be formulating a book that is CLEAR, unlike the current translations. "I think it is a great idea! Hopefully, after it is done we won't need any translations any more )

"Yes, OQS was very, very, very helpful. I think we should duplicate the process with the group we have here. There have been a few Quran study sites online, some of them gone now, and they may still be an inspiration and a help for us. Yet, behind my idea of the QSD there was the desire to involve the excellent people on the FM forum. C'mon girls and boys, we can do it too! Besides, there is no better way to learn than to do it oneself!
So much for the organisation stuff. Let's roll up our sleeves- sura 1 is waiting!
Any comments on the introductory remarks?
With peace,
Layla

Peace be upon you,
Are we starting right here in this section? If so, what is the first section we are to discuss, the entire surah 1? I will wait a little while for a response before I start posting. I am excitied to have a study that goes in order, as this one, while at the same time we can discuss certain issues on the rest of this forum.

Rahman/ Rahim so far?
Usually/ traditionally, they are treated as derivatives of the same root, ?rahima? (as TheNabi pointed out (after Omar?s dictionary I suppose?, p. 205) with the meaning ?(?)To love, have tenderness, pity, forgiveness, show favour, have all that is required for exercising beneficence?). There is also the meaning of ?womb? (mentioned by Wakas) and ?relationship? (rahimun, rihmun; pl. arham) (Omar, p. 205)
As such, Rahman and Rahim are translated into ?Merciful? and ?Compassionate? respectively. J.M. Rodwell claims, there is ?only a shade of difference between the two words? (the Koran, p. 431), namely ?the former (?) implies that the mercy of God is exercised as occasions arise, towards all his creatures; the latter that the quality of mercy is inherent in God and permanent (?)?. He suggests ?In the name of Allah, the God of Mercy, the Merciful? as a rendering closer to the Arabic original (ibid).
Similar line of reasoning we can find in other translators and interpreters of the Quran. Omar (mentioned earlier) proposes a fuller distinction between those names
Rahman idea of fullness, extensiveness, greatest preponderance of the quality of love and mercy which comprehends the entire universe without regard to our effort and asking even before we are born; generally pertains to this life and the creation of the universe (as Prophet Muhammad was to say). Also it ?circumscribes the quality of abounding Grace inherent in and inseparable from the concept of Almighty (?)?
Rahim the idea of constant repetition and giving of liberal reward to those who deserve it and seek of it, in response to and as a result of our deeds and supplications; Prophet Muhammad was to say that this attribute pertains to the life to come. It ?expresses the continuous manifestation of that Grace in and its effect upon us and is an aspect of one?s activity.?
On the other extreme, Parwez (in Exposition of the Holy Quran, pp. 66-67) differentiates between Rahim as ?one who provides nourishment in the normal course of growth and development? as well as ?in progressive evolution? and Rahman as the one does the same ?in full force and manifold in an emergency? or ?Emergent Evolution?. Parwez rejects the concept of mercy as un-Quranic and explains ?Rahmat? in terms of source of nourishment and those gifts from God (like e.g. the joys of life) that are free (e.g. 119-10, 1882) as well as protection or cover (and contrasts it with ?zarar?(1021, 3033), ?sayyi?at?(3036), and ?ahlaka?672). To boot, the Wahi, as a source of the Divine Revelation and thus a nourishment for the soul/ nafs and body, is also ?Rahmat? (2105, 4332).Irhazi offered yet another possible translation ?In the name of God, The Origin, The Arranging (after Le Soleil se l?ve ? l'Occident - Science pour l'Heure, Farid Gabteni).? This one is linked to the meaning of ?womb? mentioned in e.g. Omar and by Wakas (who I think referred to the same book and translation as Irhazi)
The link http//www.free-minds.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2105 provides a short discussion on possibilities of rendering those Arabic terms into English and linguistic possibilities of translating them into not necessarily repetitive terms.
It is argued that although ?(?) words coming from the same root are essentially similar but can have different meanings (?)? (savage_carrot). Zlatan supported this line of reasoning with his short definitions of homonymia and polysemia, a language phenomenon not restricted to Arabic only. The former refers to cases in which ?the meanings are totally unrelated while in the polysemia the meanings are different but related or similar (?).? And a lot of examples of such polysemic cases were offeredRoot meaning1 meaning2
Nfq infaq= spending nifaq=hypocrisy
Aabd worship, serve, submit reject, disdain,
Qst do justice do injusticeKhfy hide, cover show, uncover
?dhaab punishment sweet, pleasant
It is believed that whatever translation we accept, those two terms are ?two sides of the same sphere? (Wakas), which brings us back to the traditional stance?
But returning to the comment by Omar, who says that the name ?Rahman? ?(?) circumscribes the quality of abounding Grace inherent in and inseparable from the concept of Almighty.? That reminds me of the article by Sister W.H. (http//free-minds.org/articles/gods_system/rahman.htm), who argued that ?Rahman? should be translated as ?Almighty?. She underlines the fact that both names/ attributes are used as a pair (and a pair of opposites! despite the common root) but at the same time their meanings are made clear by the Quranic contexts in which they are used as separate names and in different meanings. The author refers to the simple truth of the Quran
self-interpretation (which I mentioned too in the introductory post)? (?)Usage, not etymology and certainly not dictionaries, is always the ultimate determining factor in word-meanings, and this is no exception. How a name is used in the Qur?an should be our determining factor in deciding what is the meaning of that name (?)?
While Rahim indeed shares its meaning with mercy, being merciful and love, Rahman does not. It is ?(?) referring to the power and authority and all-encompassing might of Allah.? She mentions that Rahman is used interchangeably with God/ Allah (17110) and it cannot have possessive forms (unlike e.g. ?Rabb?)
The most representative sura to show the correct meaning of Rahman is sura 19. In verse 18 Mary/ Maryam asks for help and protection against an intruder; in 45 Abraham/ Ibrahim fears the wrath of God (Rahman) against his disbelieving father; in 85-95 the idolatry of Christians is exposed- they claim that Rahman shares His power with others. Probably the most telling example is that of sura 201-8 with its throne of God ? a symbol of His power and authority. While later verses 108- 111 show God?s Power on the Day of Judgement. Sura 55 refers to God?s creation of the universe, people and the mode of teaching. Sister W.H. refers to other instances of the usage of Rahman 2163, 1330, 17110, 1918, 1926, 1944, 1945, 1958, 1961, 1969, 1975, 1978, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 205, 2090, 20108, 20109, 2126, 2136, 2142, 21112, 2526, 2559, 2560, 2560, 2563, 2563, 265, 2730, 3611, 3615, 3623, 3652, 412, 4317, 4319, 4320, 4333, 4336, 4345, 4381, 5033, 551, 5922, 673, 6719, 6720, 6729, 7837, and 7838.
?(?) when the two names, Al-Rahman and Al-Raheem, are invoked together (in succession) in the Qur?an, their usage clearly declares the ultimate Authority and Power of Allah(?)?
?Power and might are associated with authority, punishment, retribution, and the ability to overwhelm and conquer all who are without power - and in the context of the Almighty, all else has no power relative to Him. Mercy, on the other hand, is associated with forgiveness, kindness, leniency, the act of extending help and relief to those without power, of giving without asking in return, of considering the point of view and situation of one outside oneself, someone different, of being responsive and receptive. And in the case of Allah (glory to Him in the highest) all else is unlike Him, hence different, and all else is the recipient of His mercy. It is His mercy that connects to us, that deals with our wants (from our point of view or situation) and needs, and through which we can relate to Him. For we are, relative to Him, powerless, and unable to perceive or contact Him, except through His mercy (and Power which enables His mercy). And so we have two crucial attributes absolute power and authority on the one hand, and all-encompassing mercy on the other. The relationship between these two attributes, two opposites, is absolutely dynamic, profoundly so, and that profound dynamic indicates something of the profoundly dynamic nature of the Supreme Power, of Allah (?)? She underlines the dynamic and active aspect of Divine creation as well as that of the relationship between those attributes opposite and yet balanced.
As it can be seen from the above, the traditionalists heard the bell ring but they must have misplaced the church Thus their vague and shaky explanations of Rahman and Rahim served in the sauce of opposites such as general and particular, this life and the hereafter, or pure grace and cause and effect.
And what do you think, dear friends? Having looked at the Quran?
With peace,

Peace be upon you Layla,

Peace be upon you,
11 With the God's description, the cause (it is a mercy that we have the ability to cause an effect), the effect( all causes lead to an effect, the God's Might)
The descriptions of the God are disciplines for us to implement and try to maintain, we reap what we sow.
12 The appreciation to the God, Lord of the creations.
We appreciate the laws that guide us in creation, without it we would be always guessing, and guessing is no substitute for the truth. Every thing is connected to the Whole
13 The Cause, the Effect
14 Controller of the system time
Cause and effect controls this time that we experience, it is all part of the God's System(deen).
15 You we serve and you we seek help from
It is our best interest to serve (follow the commands) of cause and effect, the Most High has made it control this system, so you might as well submit to the laws of the God. We seek help from the description of the God as Cause and Effect. Learning how to cook is one such example of the help sought from cause and effect.
16 Guide us to the maintained path
17 path (of) those You blessed on them, not the angered on them, and nor the strayers.
The God is above anger, but I am not sure which word is should be understood.

Peace be upon you,

Peace all,
Thank you for your participation in the project! Hope that in time more people will get involved and share their understanding of the Quran with us here
Before we finish on the first surah, I would like to draw your attention to some specific terms that appear in it. First of them al-aalamin (wonder that the definite article al- is of some importance!)
This term looks rather straightforward. According to most dictionaries and the all-favourite Burhan, it can be translated into various ways and has many derivatives

Dear Moderators, any chance for arranging the Group in a suggested-before way? -
Peace be upon you,
Since many have provided ample material to work with, I would expose only some conclusions based on the verses cited before.
For the word "ar-rahman"
I consider it to be "the original and the ultimate cause". An example could be like in running a computer simulation, you set all the parameters in advance, with a known set of rules or an algorithm, and you press ENTER, then the simulation begins instantly. (see 551-4 "552 ?llama al-quraan = defined the set of rules/laws )
The word "ar-rahim"
I don't know of a word in english for it, but I consider it to be like "the provider of the necessary hardwar" for the incubation of the simulation above. Like the womb and the baby.
The word "al-?lamin"
This one, I'm almost sure it means "the knowledgables". It's the plural of "?leem" as in "rahim" plural "rahimin" (7151 1264)
-
peace All,
Is the following correct?
where ever the word 'baa (with) ' appears it is always connected to a verb which may be apparent or hidden. in the above example it is hidden and is implied. the verb is 'ashra oo (I begin)' and is implied at the end of the sentence since God's name is the most important part and so naturally is at the beginning.
correct translation is therefore ' with the name of Allah the most merciful the benificent I begin'

Peace be upon you,
So everyone here so far sees the meaning of "rahman" to mean something along the lines of "causation" like a seed being planted?
And "rahim" is basically like the womb which, according tho the governing laws, brings the cause to the effect?
-
Peace be upon you,
How does everyone see verse 17?
I do not agree with using "emotions" to describe the God who is above emotions. So what does everyone have for "anger"?
-
Salaamun alaikum Layla,
Excellent idea starting this. I hope to learn and contribute as much as I can, insha Allah. Perhaps as well as an inquiry into the meanings, we can also see the flow of this sura from beginning to end. I was stimulated to this approach by this article
http//www.islamic-awareness.org/Quran/Q_Studies/Mirfatihah.html
This sura starts out with 'al-hamd' , a certain emotion which leads to looking for Allah who is
- rabb al-alameen
- ar-rahmaan and ar-raheem
- maliki yaum-ad-deen.
So here we're moving from recognition of 'rabb' (role of parenting in a cosmic sense) to ar-rahmaan and ar-raheem put together.
Then, we move to maliki yaum-ad-deen, our relationship with Allah is mentioned for the first time.
Next, verse 4 which says 'to you alone we serve and to you alone we seek 'istaan'. To me, the 'and' or 'wa' here is best translated as 'that is', i.e. 'na'budu' and 'nastain' are one and the same thing. 51/56 clarifies this by saying we are created ONLY to serve him, which means there's nothing else but serving Him. This is our relationship as a response to verse 3 above.
Verses 5 moves us towards this path which we defined in verse 4 and verse 6 shows indicators of that path.
Insha Allah, if we look at this 'flow' of sura 1, we will get a better feel of it, imho.
shukran wa salaam.

Peace be with you all,
With pleasure I see that the project is slowly developing And must admit that I have already benefited a lot from an in-depth analysis of some of the Quranic terms and the comments that have appeared here and in other threads. I am sure that more is to come! I may be a bit sad that "alamin" does not necessarily mean "worlds" (it suited so nicely the dream people have of life on other planets...) but the truth should be more important than our wishful thinking.
I would like to suggest a closer look at the term connected with "alaamin" from 12, namely Rabb. Parwez stressed the importance of "Rabb" and "Rabubiyyat". Please look at http//www.toluislam.com/pub_online/exposition/glossary_o_to_r.htm#_Toc428590298. Any opinions?
Definitely, a closer look at the Quranic context would give us more information. Insha Allah, I will prepare that for us soon (unless somebody will be faster ).
I think that "hamd" is worth a deeper investigation too (a pity that the link about it has steered off the main point, however very interesting as well!) http//www.free-minds.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2161
What do you think about Omar's (pp.540-541) differentiation between malik and maalik (with an alif) that is, that the former refers to a king, and the latter a master (alif adding to an 'intensity'). Am I wrong or is it the only occurance of "maalik" in the Quran? If Omar's suggestion is right then the translation of "nabudu" into "(we) serve" would be more proper since no-one "worships" a master... But then, on the other hand, no-one worships a king either ?
I am in the process of preparing some materials on "yaumi ad-din" and "din" itself. So please be ready too! From the suggestions so far (and Aaron, thanks for your mail!), you tend to think in the same direction as I have in mind, i.e. that "yaum" does not imply a "day" but rather a more or less specific length of time e.g "era". Hope that it will get clearer, God willing.
Looking forward to your comments and opinions.
With peace
