Under any circumstances, is suicide allowed in Islam (under Quran-only Islam rather than Sunnism)
...not for the purpose of war or terrorism, but due to long term emotional suffering, pain and depression?I'm having some trouble understanding the verses 429-30
429 ....And do not kill yourselves; God is Merciful towards you.
430 And whoever does so out of animosity and transgression,
we will cast him to a fire and this for God is very easy.What if one's suicide was not out of animosity (i.e. to purposefully hurt somebody else) or transgression (being vengeful or angry at God for the current situation) ?
Please give your opinions and interpretations based on knowledge from the Quran.

God blessAllah didn't say suiciders go to hell, in the contrary, he only told them to don't despaire from the mercy of Allah, Actually allah sopke to suicidals nicely and gently, so no one knows how Allah is gonna treat them in the hereafter, and whoever say suiciders go to hell, is blaspheming for no one knows how allah is gonna juge them.

i don't believe sura 4029 is referring to suicide. God is telling believers basically not to take someone else's wealth, to trade with mutual consent and not to destroy each other. if anyone is out to oppress and be unjust then well to the hell fire they can go. hmm...sounds more like the ayat is referring to the likes of hosni mubarak who i hear is worth billions.
suicide is not something that is specifically addressed in the koran (please do correct me if i am wrong). we can infer that it is wrong in islam to commit suicide. God does make it clear not to kill except in self-defense and to save a life is to have saved a nation. so from this, i would deduce that commuting suicide is not allowed in islam as the person you are killing is yourself.
speaking from very personal experience, i can tell you that suicide is not islamic. twice in my life, i was at the point of ending my life. i know without any doubt in my mind that both times, God intervened. i was really angry that day though that i wasn't even allowed to end my life! but glad that i didn't.
on one has died and come back to let us know what is on the other side. no one has committed suicide and said that they were forgiven or not forgiven. why take that chance. people think about suicide wanting to end their suffering but what if the act doesn't end suffering. if you truly submitted yourself to God then suicide is something that you will not even think of. God is hope and i sure can bear witness to that.

Why should every suicide be considered equally?
It is not the same the suicide committed under the suffering of depression, which is a real desease and an awful one, as the suicide commited under rage or out of pride, or the one committed bearing in mind all alterntives and finding may be that any other will do more harm to your family or the people in general. I am not saying it is good or bad in any particular case but that the reasons for it may be quite different. At any rate, suicide, seeing oneself being pushed to it, is surely no fun, so it can hardly be done just for kicks. At the very least there may be a lot of confusion or a crucifying situation. It takes a lot of courage also. May God be Merciful to all of us, because finally we are all at some time or always against ourselves in a certain measure.

The most important part is that in 429 "And do not kill yourselves; Allah is MERCIFUL towards you" is said only to The Believers as the aayat starts with "Yaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo".
430 tell us about some reasons of doing so, and if it was done by "Aggression " and "Injustice " then the result was also given in the same aayat.

i don't agree with your conclusion that those who commit suicide do so out of aggression or injustice as in 430. i am not sure how you come to the understanding that sura 429-30 is referring to suicide.
you ask what makes people suicidal?
....victims of rape/sexual assault
....veterans of war struggling with post traumatic stress syndrome
....people who have lost their home to foreclosure, financially struggling, marriage falling apart
....people whose lives have been destroyed by hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, natural disasters.
....people suffering from incurable illness, tired of fighting, in too much physical pain, tired of doctors, being in and out of hospital.
....there is so much suffering of varying degrees. and not all who end up taking their own lives are suffering from depression. they are though suffering spiritually. it is when you lose hope of your life situation or the pain that you feel is so unbearable that you just want it to put a stop to it, that's when suicidal thoughts can get pervasive. people who want to end their life some actually believe that God will be merciful and understanding.
those who are suicidal have not completely submitted themselves to God, believing in Him, relying on God to help get them through and to bear their pain.

Gos is not unjust. He knows what He has burned each person with. He is Most Mercful and Wise, and He will not cheat on a single thing. Those who bore many sufferings with patience , even if they could not put up with forever, they will not loose whtever they had bore already. God says so, whatever good has been done, it will be seen, whatever wrong will be seen. God is Just and Ra'uf.
We do not know what thos who suffer are going through when they cannot bear it any more. Only God knows.

Probably not, but there is one thing which is very common nd it is that many different sufferings in origine, may end up in fact inducing depression, even in persons who are not prone to it, but the persistency of sufferng, in fact many times causes depression. I have seen it happening very often.

Justamuslim. Almost all of the examples you have given for why should one commit suicide are I would say nowere near a good reason if there is such a thing.
The only reason that you can say is understandable is chronic illnes that causes you unberable amounts of pain that cannot be treated with any medication. Even then its a question of whether you should let them be uthanised.
I have schizophrenia. I have been diagnosed about five and a half years ago. Even before that aparently my brain would have been diferent. This has caused me and those around me a lot of problems. I take the medication that makes me feel horible. Tired, dull, hard to feel happyness. It does irreversible damage to my nervous system, etc. But I have to take it.
And to kill my self while I am even half sane would be transgresion and anymosity to God. Life is a beatifull gift even when it gets hard.

Pel, for you to commit suicide would be a transgression or animosity to God but it is not for someone else. As huruf said, we don't know what people are going through that they can no longer bear their situation.
in my line of work, i see a lot of human suffering. it is easy for me to reach out to someone who doesn't have faith. the person that is hardest is one who believes that God is merciful and understanding and wanting to end their life not out of transgression but because they simply are tired and can no longer bear their situation. some have poor coping skills - boyfriend or girlfriend breaks ups and the ex takes a bunch of pills overdosing. at that moment ex is not thinking - ok, i hate God and I am going to transgress.
also, there are many who are 'passively' committing suicide which is no different than taking a gun and putting a bullet through the head.
back to the topic of this thread re the sura and ayat in question - is it really referring to suicide? from reading various translations, my understanding is that it does not.

Justamuslim, you sound like an understanding person, and thats good. Personaly I am trying to work out what does God say on the subject.
It says obviously not to kill your selves and then it says not to do it out of animosity and transgresion. So in some cases suicide would be forgiven. So uthanasia would be allowed. There you go, you are right Justamuslim.

Even though there is lawful and unlawful divide about things and actions, the ultimate rule is that normal laws are for normal situations and circumstances therefore under normal siutation and ciurcumstances what is unlawful is unlawful including suicide.
However not all situations and circumstances are normal for everyone everywhere therefore, it is up to individuals or society to decide whether the rules of the game have changed or not.
For example under normal circumstances one cannot kill anyone but when attacked one is allowed to defend and in that context killing of the attacker is no sin if that is the only way for the attacked to survival.
Same with food that haraam become halaal when situation dictates.
Islam has laws regarding three situations;
- laws that are private for individuals ie things between man and his god. So long as a matter does not affect anyone else in any way, it is one's own business.
2)Matters between individuals and their god relating social conduct. Two people do with each other whatever they like it is between god and them and nothing to do with legal authorities in the land. Two people fight each other and make up and do not go to police to report the incident then that is the end of matter.
3)matters between individuals and their god relating social conduct as well as law enforcing authorities in the land. Matters like birth, death, marriage, divorce, killing, robbing etc etc are not personal because such things need legal proofs for proper functioning of a society for various purposes. Society is an organisation or an association hence the rules and regulations for organisational purposes.
Therefore suicide is only sin if it is intended for wrong reason not otherwise. A perons sees a kid in the road and sees a car coming which is going to crush him and dives to save him and dies in the process is not a sin. So the intension and purpose or motive behind going for one's death decides whether one has sacrficed one's life or merely taken it away.
If one is in pain beyond one's capability to bear it, then suicide would not be sin because one is not taking one's life merely for sake of it or happily. Sin is only there when one does something with intention of sinning. Likewise intentions, situations and circumstances are between god and the person acting therein.
Just thought that one is going to die if one does not get the food and one is not aware of getting the hallaal food, is enough to turn the unlawful lawful for the person. You don't have to actually die to prove to youself that you were really in need of it.
