Not Qur'anist, not Qur'an Alone, not Qur'anite, but Muslim.

I was led to Islam with the guidance of the ICNA, a self-professed Sunni organization of Muslims and their branch organization, WhyIslam.org
During my time as a recipient of da'wah, the kind Muslims on that site focused solely on the Qur'anic teachings - it was only after I accepted Islam that they began dumping hadith laws on me. Initially I accepted it, since hey, these are sayings of the messenger!
Then 2005 rolled around and the infamous political cartoon depicting Muhammad caused an absolute outrage in the Arab world. People were not only rioting in the street, but literally making attempts on the cartoonist's life over a depiction of Messenger Muhammad.
What got me thinking was why weren't Muslims outraged over churches that had statues of Jesus, or the Sistine Chapel, which depicted God as a human? South Park had run an episode depicting Muhammad years ago and there was no outrage at all. Even Arabian art depicts Muhammad in various murals and paintings, so why does this Danish cartoonist deserve to have his life taken away? Nothing in the Qur'an said anything about a death sentence to those who mock a Messenger of God, and many accounts say that Muhammad was mocked, attacked and even had attempts on his life, which he forgave.
Needless to say, I decided to stop practicing my Islam in order to distance myself from all the anger and hate. I still identified myself as a Muslim whenever anyone asked what I believed in, but stressing that I only accepted the basic tenant of Islam - Belief in no God but God. I started reading the Qur'an again just recently alongside the hadith and realized that the Qur'anic religion was rather simple and the hadith made things very complicated - forbidding things that wern't in the Qur'an for no justifiable basis (for example, the Qur'an says that ALL animals are lawful to eat except for pig, but the hadith restricts the eating of any animal with fangs and female donkeys) while adding elements that completely negate the point of obeying the Qur'an (saying "Amen" after reciting Surah 1 during prayer supposedly erases all past sins). I brought this issue up with many Muslims who told me that Bukhari was very strict about what hadiths were 'true' hadiths by following a self-invented science of the truthfulness of the chain of narrators. Nevermind the blatant contradictions a hadith may hold, at least Bukhari thinks that all the narrators over 2 centuries were 100% truthful!
I reconfirmed my Shahadah at a local mosque, and said it my way "There is no God but God and Muhammad is a Messenger of God"
I'm currently doing personal research on the hadith and going book by book across Bukhari to highlight any and all hadith that do not agree with Qur'an, Science, Medicine or Logic. I'm only 3 books in and the list is terribly extensive.
I still pray 5 times a day, sometimes 3, but ultimately, I am thankful to God Almighty for allowing me to question the words of men, for Bukhari is to the Qur'an as Paul was to the Injeel.

Salaam Aleikum! and you are now SOOOO on the right path, the path of God Alone, which is all God, in His infinite wisdom, intended fpor us! the situation u describe is exactly how i ended up here, on free minds. I would like to tell you though, do not throw out the baby with the bath water...there are some sites u should visit, like www.submission.org, www.quranicpath.org, and www.masjidtucson.org, just to name a few. they call themselves submitters, which i agree with, and call myself. sadly, the names muslim and islam have been hijacked by the likes of the hadeethists in both the shiia and sunni factions, so unless u are willing to give lengthy explanations each and every time, people will always associate you with "mainstream" (read as hadeethist/mohammedanist wirshipper) muslims. this mainstream, ruined, no longer pure version of what God gave us has been distorted beyond any recognition. i studied art history in college, and there are literally thousands of beautiful pieces of art depicting mohammed together with Jesus, Moses, Elijah, angels, etc., from early on, and all thru rennaissance and later. no one had any problem with that. it is a whole entre category of art called asian art, not to be confused with chinese or japanese art forms. so, i prefer to be a submitter, because ultimnately, that's what muslim means anyway, and i equally do not believe in the arabization of my religion. no prayer of mine is less worthy if said in english, no translation of the Koran is less precise or good if in english, and since i am not arab, and since the religion was supposed to be the last testament ofr ALL miankind, the i am a submitter, who dutifully and lovingly prays to my God as many times a day as i can make it, and i have no reason to believe God is not listening. keep up your journey, and stay on the straight path-as Moses said in
Deutoronomy, walk the straight path, and step not to the left, or to the right. u are correct in all the points u make, and the more hadeeth u investigate, the longer your list of absurdities will grow. peace! -

Just because a bunch of people want to keep the Arab culture intact within their beliefs doesn't bother me in the slightest. They are Muslims, I am a Muslim, and I am proud to tell people that. I don't mind conversation and if anything, it sparks their curiosity when I tell them I outright reject most of the restrictions that the majority of Muslims abide by, since they're not in the Qur'an. It's a very simple statement if it's not in the Qur'an, I don't follow it. The only exception I make is with prayer, modeled off of Bukhari supporters so I can attend my local mosque without causing a stir. I keep my head up during prayer though
I'll post my findings on Bukhari Vol 7, Book 71 on the forum tonight as a little sneak peek of what I'm doing.
