1850 And We said to the angels Yield to Adam. So they all yielded except for Satan. He was of the Jinn, he disobeyed the order of his Lord. Will you take him and his progeny as allies besides Me, while they are your enemy? Miserable for the transgressors is the substitute!

Can someone tell me what Allah means by 'yield' to Adam?

    Surely 'yield' cannot mean 'submit'?

    Peace.

    Peace,
    Respect.

Keep in mind that Adam at that point did not have a human body.
Surely angels weren't told to submit to a creature without a body.
However, it's a subject troubling me as well.
Seek God's help and ask God to increase your knowledge.
Also, compare the same verses as this one and the word yield, how is it used elsewhere in The Qur'an.

    God bless you.

    Peace.

Salaam, how do you know Adam, at that point, didn't have a human body? Peace.

Im certainly no expert but I agree maybe submit is too strong a word........I understand it to mean "stand behind" not literally stand behind but recognise that Adam was to be looked upon by the angels as unique and a wonderful creation of god that they should respect gods creation pr . Looking at things this way helps me then to understand the latter part of the verse as Satan was like no way!!! > as angels we are far more important and I will not yeild to a subordinate creation voodoo (Ok ok so my imagination runs away a bit but you get the picture)

The word used here is asjudu. The root is sjd.

MSJD - parts of a man that are the places of SJD, e.g. forehead/nose/hands/knees/feet etc. Any mode/place/practice in which the act of SJD is done.

I thought Satan was 'of the jinn'?
I don't see how a human deserves more 'respect' than a jinn?

Like I said, im no expert peace, its just how I see things to mean..........I think I tend to mix my catholic upbringing and early bible lessons with Quran now and then confusedas the stories are repeated in the Quran and as far as I can remember the bible explains how the angels did not understand why god gave Adam dominion over the earth....they questioned why he was worthy.......(although im off to check this now so dont hold me to that ) and although I may have used the wrong word ie respect... I see the verse as Satan refusing to accept gods will for humans to be held in any regard let alone in the regard where he should yield to them...

God knows best and hopefully he will guide me to the correct meaning pr

The evidence suggests the story of adam is a parable

                    Greetings and peace, all group

Ya'll know, I was thinking/meditating about 1850 earlier this morning.

Here are my thoughts. One of the possible meanings of "asjudu" is to physically offer respect. If Satan got in such trouble for not offering physical respect to a human, how much more important and necessary (for us) is it for humans to offer physical respect to ALLAH?

                    peace

I think in that verse the verb "sacada" refers to "accepting one's upper hand" , not necessarily means physically prostrate, bow down or submit, once said "accepted", "sacada" is performed.
                      In another verse 375;
?He said O Satan, what prevented you from yielding to what I have created by My hands? Are you too arrogant? Or are you one of those exalted??
Here "sacada" is used like the opposite of "arrogance", imo emphasis is on not something physical but rather refers to something allegorical...

There is a way to resolve all that.

First of all, the designation angel, is used many times, in a way that supports that angels do the will of humans.
One could use it in such a way "he helped me, he was an angel". "she did what I wanted, she was an angel".
One seems to need to separate the evil jinn Iblis from the equation, he will not do your will, or help you. He is your enemy. He considers himself superior because he is made of fire. There are also benevolent jinn.
To resolve this with the statement that Angels only do the will of God, one must consider the divine soul/ruh/consciousness/lifeforce of man.
The verse also seems to imply that angels do not do the will of Jinn. And jinn can be present in the human mind, like solomon "who had jinn present".
So it must be a human wish, and not the influence of satan.
And since human nature is divine, the wish is always good, and therefore angels, are never evil. Doing the will of God, the compassionate.

                            Salaam,

As per my understanding of 'sajada' is as follows

                            2218
2218 Did you not see that to Allah yields what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and the sun and the moon and the stars and the mountains and the trees and what moves, and many of the people, and many who have deserved the retribution. And whoever Allah disgraces, then none can honor him. Allah does what He pleases.

Did you not see that all do 'sajada' to Allah? That means, we can see. Please note that the word used 'taraa' in 2218 does not mean literal seeing by eye. Please refer 7198 for better understanding of this word. 'Taraa' means to see by Allah's signs, to see by research, to see by knowledge, etc. And 2218 makes it clear that we can taraa the sajada of all to Allah.

                            4829
4829 Mohammed is the messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against the rejecters, but merciful between themselves. You see them kneeling and prostrating, they seek the blessings and approval of Allah. Their distinction is in their faces, as a result of prostrating. Such is their example in the Torah. And their example in the Gospel is like a plant which shoots out and becomes strong and thick and it stands straight on its trunk, pleasing to the farmers. That He may enrage the rejecters with them. Allah promises those among them who believe and do good works a forgiveness and a great reward.

Again the same word used 'taraahum'. This aayat is for all, even for those who are present at the time of Prophet Mohammed (AS), but still the word used is 'taraa', if 'sajada' and 'ruku' in 4829 is a 'physical act' then it can be viewed by others by a naked eye, in such case the word used would be 'nazar' instead of 'taraa'.

4829 shows us that 'sajada' is an act that either be done by mouth or from heart.

                            1761
                            1762

1761 And We said to the angels Yield to Adam. So they yielded except for Satan, he said Shall I yield to one you have created from clay!
1762 He said Shall I show You this one whom You have preferred over me, that if You respite me until the Day of Resurrection, I will seize his progeny, except for a few.

Here I understand that Allah preferred/gave importance to Adam over Iblis and Allah asked that Angels for the same. Sajada in the above aayat is 'giving importance or preference'. This also clarifies that Iblis refused and became arrogant in 234 furthermore he said 'I am better than him' in 3876

                            1821
1821 And similarly, We caused them to be found that they would know that the promise of Allah is truth and that of the Hour there is no doubt. When they disputed among themselves about their affair and said, "Construct over them a structure. Their Lord is most knowing about them." Said those who prevailed in the matter, "We will surely take over them a masjid."

There are two phrases to be noticed in 1821 "Ubnoo 'alaihim bunyaanan" means "construct over them a structure" and "lanattakhizanna 'alaihim masjidan" means "we will take/hold over them a masjid". 'Masjid' is the place of 'sajada', if we take the meaning from 1762, the meaning is clear that they want to take/hold on them a masjid or a place of importance or a preferred place. Please note that the word 'ubnoo' means 'construct' is used only for structure and not for masjid in 1821.

Not only this, the meaning of sajad also includes 'remembering much'.

                            2114
2114 And who are more wicked than those who prevents from masjids of Allah that His name be remembered in them; and they seek their destruction? They will not be able to enter them except in fear; they will have humiliation in this world and in the Hereafter a painful retribution.

                            2240
2240 The ones who were driven out of their homes without justice, except that they said Our Lord is Allah! And if it were not for Allah defending the people against themselves, then many places of gathering, and markets, and bonds, and masjids where the name of Allah is much remembered, would have been destroyed. Allah will give victory to those who support Him. Allah is Powerful, Noble.

This is how I understand, I might be wrong.

May Allah correct me in my understanding if I am wrong and guide us all to His only path pr
