    shakk is also a masdar. Raib and shakk though somewhat different are pretty much synonyms. raib as I have always understood it (and the dictionary may correct me) is less presumptious about the innoncence of the thing causing doubt. So it implies a shakk that may involve a lie or a fanciful tale. Hence the term mureeb. Something that causes serious doubt, misgivings or suspicion. Whereas shakk is just plain old curiousity about whether something is true/genuine or not. I've given you my personal understanding which may be accurate but it might not be. I suggest you look at lisanul-arab for a more detailed, undeniable explanation.

    Anwar

      Peace Anwar.

      "Mureeb", is mentioned as effect or trait of Shak, therefore, how could they be synonymous?

      The fact is that only those people seek your permission for exemption who in fact do not consciously believe in Allah, the Exalted and the Last Day and their hearts are self-irked suffering duplicity. The natural consequence is that they, in their self-created state of irksome duplicity of thought, keep vacillating.

      The affect of Raib is indicated by the verb .
      Verb Intransitive; Imperfect; Third Person; Plural; Masculine; Mood Indicative evident by ;; Subject Pronoun, nominative state; - Verbal noun. Its Root is " ". Basic perception and signification is to revert back to the original position, location or state. Measure/Form-V verb relate to the intensive meaning of Form-II with the addition of reflexive meaning, i.e. the meanings of Form-II are reflected back onto the subject of verb. The indicative mood of the verb signifies continuance, or frequentative signification. The intensive and frequentative signification renders its meanings as to cause someone to waver, vacillate, in an affair, or between two affairs. This reflects a confounded and perplexed state of heart and mind. The feel, emotion, and passion and also the disconcert, irk etc are, in general perception too, related to the heart. Hearts need to disassociate from the emotion and passion to attain a tranquil state

      Their building, the one that they have designed, will continue to be irking disquiet of duality sustained in their/ hearts. This will continue except that their hearts diligently disassociate/distance self. Remain mindful that Allah, the Exalted is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise, and Knower of invisible/hidden realities/considerations.

          Mazhar,

          You have given your interpretations and tried to make them fact. If you are going to ask a question ask one because you want to know something you did not. I didn't know you were asking a rhetorical question. So my bad. In the end, if you don't cite a linguistic authority on Classical Arabic or cite some real deficiency in that authority and then try to provide a solution, dont' waste your time with me. Again, I'm sorry for trying to answer your rhetorical question.

            Peace Anwar,

            I don't uderstand why at times you put in meaningless lines on the board. Every word is defined therein.
            Why not you accept that Raib and Shak are not synonyms? If you think they are sysnonyms advance some reason other than that Jalalain had said this.

                Can be substituted by as done by translators.

                Majority of the Urdu, English translators substitute the word of Qur'an by the word in their translations. Are they right? Can be considered as sysnonym of ?

                Please give input.

                I start

                It is a Verbal/Infinitive noun, in Arabic terminology . In Arabic, it is a noun signifying action only. It is the source from where verbs derive. Its past and present tense verbs are -. Infinitive Noun signifies the action indicated in the verb derived from it. The action that a verb denotes signifies change and alteration of states in time and space, physical or abstract, which was the intent or objective of doing that act. An action causes an effect to take existence; causes a new state to emerge different to that, which existed before the execution of action.
                The major difference between the Verb and Infinitive Noun , in meaning, is that the verb signifies the occurrence of an action within a particular time-period, like the past, present or future. The Infinitive Noun alone can only signify the occurrence of an action within the time-period in which it finds mention. Other words are required to signify the action of the within the context of past or future. This aspect of peculiar choice of words in a statement of Source language Arabic, when ignored, causes major "translation loss" in the target language for perceiving the compact thought conveyed therein. These words in the translation, "you will find all the time reading it" attempt to convey this aspect of use of an Infinitive Noun in the statement.

                The Root of the word is " ". Lanes Lexicon, pp 363, Vol-III states, " -, Infinitive Noun "It occasioned in me disquiet, disturbance, or agitation of mind. This is the primary signification.". At page 364 it states; " The primary signification is Disquiet, disturbance, or agitation of mind. Accidents or evil accidents of time that disturb or disquiet the heart and mind".

                I could not find the difference between "rayb" and "shakk" in your post. I only saw the usage of the word "rayb" and its derivatives.

                Please show the difference between the two words and also "Imtaraaun" if you can.

                I believe that each different word used in AlQuraan got surely different meaning, no synonyms or substitutes is used. I might be wrong, but have to work out on that with the help of Allah if He permits.

                    After taking a look at the links that you gave, I am in RAYB about the meaning of 'rayb', yes this is how I understand.

                    "Rayb" = confusion
                    "Shakk" = doubt

                      One may have negative natured doubt about the condut of quite many people in his locality but that might not bother him or cause any irksome concern. However if he has same doubt about his spouse and progeny it will cause, to most of the people, psychological disturbance. There lies the difference. Shak precedes Raib and not vice versa. How can they be same? That is the point. Genuine Shak leads to enquiry and investigation whereafter it will diminish. Volitional doubt is not for purposes of investigation and enquiry.
