Peace Buzzor,
The word in arabic used for "ally" is "tatawallawo". But I think it's mistranslated.
"Tatawalla", as I understand it, is "to put yourself under the autorithy of" i.e to work for someone.
Thus a better translation would be
- O you (pl) who believe, do not put yourselves under the autorithy of a people with whom the god is "angry"; for they have given-up regarding the Hereafter, just like the rejecters have given-up on the people who are already in the graves.

that would clear up the apparent contradiction between 55 and 551 that we can marry the people of the Scripture but not take allies with the Christians and Jews, though if the translation isn't changed it doesn't matter cause people of the scripture do not necessarily mean only Christians and Jews or Christians and Jews at all possibly (still studying the concept of al kitab) but a better translation would take the burden off of us having to explain it so I'm all for it
P.S.-I just check the usage of it in the reading itself and its root usage, authority seems to work just as good if not better then friends/allies, you have any dictionary references or anything to prove your definition?
peace

yeah I noticed that contradiction, and that might have caused me to doubt its meaning. Often I really don't take certain words meanings too seriously in translations, or take them as the best translation.

peace someone, so would you take this as a command not to be employees of them, or not to let them command you, in a more genral sense (hope I'm making sense!) or......?

Peace,
a weird question, but hasn't the law for not setting up partners with The God already been set down? why would it be repeated in this way?
I think it's not at the same level.
In the real life, not everybody is able to work individualy, some have to work for others since the god distributed wealth according to his will. Some have more than others just because they were born in a certain situation. Nobody had choosen.
Serving the god is a 24h / 7days "job", and working is a part of serving the god. Working for someone is not setting up a partner with the god, but helping someone transgressing the limits of the god, that's what is forbidden.
And since, one way or another, one have to earn his living, we are encouraged to do it for the betterement of all in accordance with the god's limits, or at least not to cause harm for anybody.
I hope I understood your question )

Peace Idris,
this is a quote from "Al-mohit" dictionnary
.- .- .- " ".- .- .- .
This word has some different meanings depending on context
- To refrain or to avoid from doing something. (1152, 4738, 4816)
- To put oneself under the command of someone else. (6013, 2257 using a derivative, 328...)
In 489 both meanings are used in the same verse.
And the god knows best.

thanx, I agree that this translation sounds much better and makes much more sense in 489 and 551, I hope Layth sees this thread and thinks about changing the translation, I wouldn't want such a great translation such as free-minds' to misguide anybody, if you go to the Christian section on FM and go to the thread "Contradiction in the Quran" you'll see that this apparent contradiction as a result of mistranslation is discussed

Peace all,
hmmm....I don't know, I'm having a bit of a hard time with the new translation, it just isn't so much of a definite 'fit' as before.
So, we think being friends with anyone is acceptable, however unpleasant it might be, and the same goes for allying, in terms of business etc., though I can see that as being very dangerous, especially if the other party isn't likely to honor agreements etc. ?
I see the verse relating to the relationship between Jews and Christians, would it now translate as saying the two are under each others authority, or what? confused I am hmmmmmm.
