What means Qatl ???
-
Salaam all,
I was wondering what exactly the word "Qatal" means in AlQuraan .
Qatl does not mean kill or fight because of the following
254
254 And Moses said to his people "O my people, you have wronged your souls by taking the calf, so turn to your Maker, and kill yourselves. That is better for you with your Maker, so He turned to you. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
Killing oneself is better for you? How?? If it still means killing then how about 3154?
3154
3154 Then He sent down to you after the worry a tranquility in sleepiness, it overtook a group of you; and another group was worried about themselves, they were thinking about God other than the truth, the thoughts of the days of ignorance. They say "Why are we involved in this affair?" Say "The entire affair is for God." They hide in their souls what they do not show to you, they say "If we had a say in this affair then none of us would have been killed here." Say "If you were inside your own homes, then the ones who had been marked for death would have come out to their resting place." God will test what is in your chests and bring out what is in your hearts. God is Knowledgeable as to what is in the chests.
Pickthall "...saying Had we had any part in the cause we should not have been slain here..."
Shakir "...They say Had we any hand in the affair, we would not have been slain here...."
Muhammed Sarwar "...They say, "Had we had the matter in our hands, we would not have been killed there"...."
"...They say/will SAY If we had order/control from anything, WE would have not been killed here..."
If they are already killed then how are they saying it? Please take a look at 230 below
230
230 And your Lord said to the angels "I am placing a successor on the earth." They said "Will You place in it he who would make corruption in it, and spill blood; while we praise by Your glory, and exalt to You?" He said "I know what you do not know."
Malaaika used the word "yasfiku aldmaa-a" instead of "qatl" what could be the possible reason?
Is qatl the opposite of victory?
474
474 Let those who seek to purchase the Hereafter with this world fight in the way of God. And whoever fights in the way of God and is killed or attains victory, then We will grant him a great recompense.
Please note the same word in red highlight and its different translation.

And recall when Musa said for/to his people, "O My Nation, You people have indeed wronged yourselves by having consciously and willfully adopted the sculpted calf. For this reason/therefore turn to your Creator for seeking forgiveness, thereat feeling ashamed/penitently/remorse for yourselves. This remorse will be better for you people in the sight of your Sustainer Lord". Thereupon, He the Exalted turned towards you in forgiveness. It is a fact that He is the One Who is repeatedly forgiving/pays attention, The Merciful.

Thanks for your response brother.
I strongly believe that each and every word of AlQuraan/AlKitaab has only ONE concept, yes concept not a single meaning which applies to all instances in AlQuraan/AlKitaab.
The meaning "remorse" cannot be used in other aayaats, for example how will you translate 474 without changing the meaning of qatl as remorse, as you translated above?
BTW thanks for 7149, I will check it out inshaAllah.

Exactly.
The concept/perception is infolded in the Root. The meanings of the word are determined by the concept of the Root plus the pattern of the word on which it is built that adds meanings/connotations and also adds relations when placed in a particular context with relation to other words/events. The basic concept of the Root will always remain present in a dominating state.
"Qatl" denotes and signifies act. An act has an intent and objective. And the act creates a state different to the one that existed before the act taking place. Moreover, the act when done is an ongoing activity over a period of time even if it is within a wink of an eye-but there is a beginning and and end.
The object and purpose of the act "Qatl" is to distance away the object of verb away from others, the society, people. Ill reputing a person is the first use of "Qatl" since the object is to distance away the people from his influence. The end is murder where one is physically and bodily removed away from the people.

I agree with you on this totally.

Can you please quote any aayat to get to this understanding clearly? Because there are already words used in AlQuraan for similar understanding, like "Ijtinaab ", "I'eetizaal ", "Laa Taqraboo ".

Cursed, condemned and distanced away have become those who fabricate and conjecture,
Qatl does not mean that they have been murdered. Curse and Condemnation results in distancing away someone.
Thanks for the aayat bro,
I agree with you on red highlighted part that it is clear in 5110 that it does not mean killed or murdered.
But the blue part is not clear enough for me to understand the same meaning as you do. InshaAllah, I will keep this meaning in mind and look for other aayaats and see if it fits. If you find any clear aayat please do post here.
May Allah guide us all to His true path pr
