Beheading

"When you meet in battle those who have disbelieved, smite their necks; and after the slaughter fasten tight the bonds, until the war lays aside its burdens. Then either release them as a favor, or in return for ransom."
Is beheading justified by these verses?

(All meanings from AL MAURID, AL WAFI, ATLAS and HANS WEHR dictionary)
O ye who believe! when ye meet the unbelievers ADVANCING never turn your backs to them. 815
O ye who believe! when ye meet a FORCE be firm and call Allah in remembrance much (and often); that ye may prosper. 845
Therefore when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight) smite at their necks; at length when ye have thoroughly subdued them bind a bond firmly (on them) thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded) but if it had been Allah's Will He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you some with others. But those who are slain in the way of Allah He will never let their deeds be lost. 474
D.ARB AR- RIQAAB = BEAT the captives
H.ATTAA 'IDHAA ATHKHANTUMO -HUM = until WHEN you have given them a sound BEATING
FA- SHUDDO AL- WATHAAQ = Then you fetter / shackle / tie them up
FA- 'IMMAA MANN(AN) BAcDU = then (release them) be it (with) graciousness
WA- 'IMMAA FIDAA' = or be it (with) ransomIf it is KILLING of DISBELIEVERS then whom shall the Muslims RELEASE with RANSOM? THE DEAD BODIES THE DISBELIEVERS?
There is no NECK in the above verse. For NECK please read the following verses with AcNAAQ
?FA- ID.RIBO FAWQA AL- AcNAAQ WA- ID.RIBO MIN -HUM KULL BANAAN 812
? So SMITE them above the NECK and SMITE of them every fingertip. 812

- So, if you encounter those who have rejected, then strike their formation until you capture them, then bind them securely. You may either set them free or ransom them, until the war ends. And had God willed, He alone could have beaten them, but He thus tests you by one another. As for those who get killed in the cause of God, He will never let their deeds be put to waste.

If you encounter (in war) those who disbelieve, you may strike the necks. If you take them as captives you may set them free or ransom them, until the war ends. Had GOD willed, He could have granted you victory, without war. But He thus tests you by one another. As for those who get killed in the cause of GOD, He will never put their sacrifice to waste.

Salaam,
I don't think beheading is justified period. And atleast not the way these guys do it. Kidnap someone, keep him for two weeks then behead him while recording a video and chanting praises of God (Allahu Akbar) and songs of Muhammad. roll
On the other hand, it would be interesting to see how they came to the conclusion that the verse 474 is talking about 'neck'.

I think the strike their formations one is more accurate, to strike their necks though (if correct) I see it as an idiom used for striking their command forces, I remember Shabbir Ahmed interpreted this way and I agree with him, but strike their formations could also work

Peace be upon you,
It looks as if we are to SEPERATE(not beat) the captives and tie them up, later thay can be released.

when i look at the wording it makes no sense; 1st would Allah who we call upon as Ar-Rahman Ir-Rahim tell us to cut off the head of another human that He has created? Then afterwards to tighten the bonds? you have to ask why you'd have to tighten the bonds of a headless body? And still later to "release them as a favor"? what kind of favor have you done by cutting off that person's head? and release the headless corpse for what purpose? what's it going to do when you release it?

Iraqi Police Discover Five Decapitated Iraqis
MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Police have found five decapitated bodies of Iraqis in northern Iraqi cities, police and hospital officials said on Tuesday.
They said two decapitated bodies were found dumped separately in central Mosul on Tuesday, two days after another was discovered near a bus station. Two had been identified and the third was also believed to be an Iraqi.
There was no immediate word on who had beheaded the three men or on the motives for the killings.
In Kirkuk, Lieutenant Colonel Awaad Jibouri said the corpse and head of a former Iraqi army officer, identified as Ali Hussein, was found in a town southwest of the city. Hussein had worked at a U.S. military base in Kirkuk.
A second Iraqi, identified as Taha Abdullah, who worked at a U.S. barracks near Baiji was also beheaded and his body was found on Monday night, Jibouri said.
Militant groups fighting U.S.-led forces and the U.S.-backed Iraqi interim government have beheaded half a dozen foreign hostages and several Iraqis in recent months.
Insurgents have frequently targeted Iraqis and foreigners working for U.S. forces in Iraq, from truck drivers to laundry workers. mg

Peace,
I believe this verse is referring to when we are in war with the disbelievers (yea yea, obvious I know). I don't believe it is referring to any war that we'd be in today as bombs or guns would be used, and it seems "smiting necks" would be hand to hand combat with swords or something along those lines. Also remember that War is only incumbent on believers in self-defense, there is no other justification for war (muslims cannot go around kidnapping people and then decapitating them, this makes no sense according to the verse, plus its not self-defense). I therefore look at the situation in the following hypothetical manner, The believers are being attacked simply because they declare that their God is one God, assuming that they've bore the attacks with the utmost patience; they've exasperated all other diplomatic options, and now the Disbelievers have openly declared war upon them. They therefore, are permitted to defend themselves in combat ( I assume it would be hand to hand combat in the past). Thus, even if the verse did read necks (which it probably doesn't, I don't know arabic), the believers would be told to strike at the necks of those who are attacking them, which to me seems to be an efficient way of killing people in hand to hand combat. However, I don't believe this is what the verse is really saying as it doesnt make much sense with regards to the "release them" part, as they'd be dead. Oh Gosh, I'm rambling again. All in all, I look at the FM translation as being the most appealing to my logic. However, I dont see why beheading in actual combat wouldn't be justified, how is it any worse than dropping an incendiary bomb on a group of people? At least with beheading you're only killing the person attacking you, there are no Civilian casualties. Furthermore, even with the traditional translation, I dont see where it would justify capturing people, and then decapitating them.PEEAAAAAACE
