I've been lurking around this site for a while, reading way into the night! I was raised liberally but came in to contact mainly with Christianity, although I also grew up in a predominantly Buddist country - I'm a 3rd culture kid (not so much a kid anymore).
My husband is a Sunni Muslim, although when I married him, he wasn't religious and now he is very mainstream. We live in Turkey. I started reading the Qur'an while on holiday in the UK and I'm mostly convinsted by the Qu'ran/God alone message. I'm worried though that I won't feel as 'free' in a mainstream dominant culture/country eg. Turkey to explore this path, not that I've actually talked face to face with any like minded people in the UK. The friends who gave me the Qu'ran translation do things like banning pet dogs from being in the house because it'll render them 'unpure' for salat purposes- this is from a white British convert???
Apologise for the brief intro. I've been meaning to post for a while, but I'm usually too tired by the end of the day to say much.

It is true that you will not be as free among others as if you were "mainstream"--but it is worth it. It isn't a popularity contest. Don't worry about what others do. Be a good example, learn, improve yourself--and if given the opportunity, invite others to the system.
2152 So remember Me that I may remember you, and be thankful to Me and do not disbelieve.
2153 O you who believe, seek help through patience and through the contact prayer, GOD is with the patient ones.
2154 And do not say of those who are killed in the cause of GOD that they are dead; no, they are alive but you do not perceive.
2155 And We will test you with some fear and hunger, and a shortage in money and lives and fruits. And give good news to those who are patient.
2156 The ones who, when afflicted with adversity, they say "We are to GOD and to Him we will return."
2157 For those there will be contacts from their Lord and a mercy, they are the guided ones.
If there is adversity, shoulder it with patience. ISA, it is for the greater good for you. By all means, if tested with adversity, pass the test! Think of how fortunate you are to have been guided!

Welcome to the forum. As you have noticed with the mainstream, their power is Ignorance. Most muslims do not study the Qur'an. They are made to listen to sheikhs/scholars/imams who school them according to their opinions based on Hadith. The only time they are allowed to explore the Qur'an, they do so using tafsir. These tafsirs are being taken as HOLY by them. The tafsirs add to the contents of Qur'an and often times abrogate the contents of Qur'an. So they read it with a man made filter.

The quran speaks of, "youths who acknowledged their Lord" abidding in a cave "and their dog has his legs outstretched by the entrance" in chapter 18 and look at verse 22.
