    I would imagine the level of 'hypocrisy' in such society..

    Where 'common thief' hands are being cut off and became a burden to the local economy.. (because they cannot work properly or find decent jobs) while high ranking officials / member of the royal families are free to 'steal' any public money that they want without facing any penalty.

    So true. Furthermore the problem with hand cutting is that the person does not has a chance to repent. And that would also mean that the allegations can be false hence leading to hand cutting of innocent people who would suffer rest of their lives for a crime they never commited. However We should remember that these persons won't be able to get a job afterwards and hence unable to provide for their kids who would live in poverty and hence become potential criminals due to poverty.

    In conclusion, chopping off the hands of thieves is a barbaric and cruel act, invented by some retarded mullahs. The best way to keep people away from stealing is by preventing the Need to steal fight poverty in the society and if someone afterwards still steal something, let him pay back what he stole.

      Shalom,

      I think it can work either way. It may begin with lots of hands cut, but in fear, the crimes may drop down drastically. However, that should not justify it. How about this solution.... behead anyone for any crime ???? Let it be telling a single lie. Wouldnt that make people fear the law ??? Anyways, I am skeptical about it, specially when it comes to arab countries. Just as Jafar pointed out... let me quote

      Where 'common thief' hands are being cut off and became a burden to the local economy.. (because they cannot work properly or find decent jobs) while high ranking officials / member of the royal families are free to 'steal' any public money that they want without facing any penalty.

      Peace be on you

        Poverty invites Immorality;
        Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.(226

        Hand Cutting historically do not make crimes drop drastically. my proof, Ottoman Empire is dead.

        Societal Economic Co-operation to create abundance in life necessities makes crimes drastically go down.

        The best method stop criminal is to teach them how to farm food.

          What do you imagine the crime rate would be in such a society, a society where anyone who steals gets his/her hands cut off?

          Hand cutting violates the eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth and a nose for a nose and a soul for a soul.

          So what happened with a hand for a hand?

          Unless a person steals what is equivalent to a hand, and its kind of hard to see how that is going to be, then we can say amputating a hand. If someone runs away with somebody's hand then you can say we have to take from him his hand. The Koran does not allow anything above an eye for an eye (equal retribution) but allows below that as it did with murder where the highest punishment is a soul for a soul but allowed exile from the community as a lower ceiling.

          The Sacred month for the sacred month and all sacred things are (under the law of) retaliation; whoever then acts aggressively against you, inflict injury on him according to the injury he has inflicted on you and be careful (of your duty) to Allah and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).

          The Koran also tells us to

          53.38. Namely, that no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another;

          The Koran forbade tribalism where a person can retaliate against any member of a tribe or family of someone who afflicted him with some harm or injustice.

          O you who believe, equivalence is the law decreed for you when dealing with murder - the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. If one is pardoned by the victim's kin, an appreciative response is in order, and an equitable compensation shall be paid. This is an alleviation from your Lord and mercy. Anyone who transgresses beyond this incurs a painful retribution

          here the Koran also emphasizes equal retribution or something of the same kind. An eye for an eye or less, just like apples for apples. Here the Koran uses another analogy, the free for the free and the slave for a slave. This is a term used to imply equal retribution.

          The reason why the Koran emphasized this is not only because of justice (qist) but also because the Israelites believed Jews have a right for disporportionate respone. They interpreted the verse that said

          5.32 "On that account We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land

          As meaning only regarding israelites. Therefore a Jew's eye can be worth a thousand gentile eye. Thats why Israel often behaves with disporportionate response. Hamas took advantage of this recently by swapping one of their prisoners with thousand of theirs. rotfl

          This is against the teachings of the Koran but this is what the Talmud teaches Jews. That anyone who kills an Israelite it is as if he killed all of mankind. They erased the universality of that verse. So any kind of punishment must be equivalent to the crime committe according to the Koran. And not an eye for an eylash and a tooth for a jaw as Judaism and sectarian islam believes.

          When it came to good the Koran says we should retaliate the good with the same or better. As when people greet you.

          This is justice. So i do not interpret "cutting hand" as meaning amputation as this violated the Koranic justice. Unless a person has inflicted harm on someone equivalent to someome losing a hand. And thats pretty hard given amputation is stated in the Koran for murder only as a lower ceiling to spare a life(5.33).

                  Are you saying that thievery brought down the Ottoman Empire?

                        I'm talking about a society ruled by the Qur'an.

                        Doesn't matter.... without proper control... all homo sapiens have a very big tendency to corrupt and/or abuse of power.
                        And Quran cannot 'rule' since it's merely a book.. a dead matter...

                        Salam / Peace
