    Assalamu Alaykum,

I have been vegan for a long time. I am thinking about joining the military and I am unsure if I will be able to survive boot camp without meat. Therefore, I am going to see how my body reacts to it and visit a Malaysian restaurant that sells zabiha and they specialize in Malay, Thai and Burmese cuisines. Are there any suggestions from these ethnic foods? I am unsure of their menu (there's no website) but I saw that they had a ton of positive reviews. I only want to try dishes with chicken. I also cannot eat anything with dairy as I am heavily allergic to it. I know from the reviews that they sell chicken biryani but I have no idea what that food is. Again, I have not touched non-vegan foods in almost a decade and I did not grow up in a Muslim/SE Asian household.

    Peace

      Greetings and Peace, all group

@amuslim Which nation's military are you joining? If the United States, you may be pleasantly surprised at the vegetarian offerings--especially in prepackaged meals (MREs). You may or may not be able to stay vegan, but you can probably stay away from meat if that is your preference. What food do you normally eat? What foods do you like? You'll probably be put on a special diet for your milk allergy.

From a Thai menu, I strongly recommend the Chicken Pad Thai eat. It is one of my favorite foods. I also enjoy (and miss!) lamb/goat/beef biryani. Biryani varies from place to place, but in my experience is a tasty rice-based dish. I haven't been able to have good biryani since leaving Afghanistan. '( Some biryanis contain yoghurt, so be careful!

      peace

        Peace Abdul,

Army or Air Force in the USA. Again, I can't eat dairy, I have allergic reaction to that. I relaly dont mind if I have to rely on salad or very basic vegetables, I am not really picky when it comes to fruits and veggies. I just dont want to eat meat if I dont have to, as I am against the way the US and other countries do not practice cruelty free methods. The only problem is boot camp. Once out of boot camp, I can go to commisarie and buy my own food.

What exactly is biryani? Is it Muslim or a Desi food?

Abdul, were u in the military?

        Peace

          Greetings and Peace, all group

Technically, boot camp is only for Marines. It is called basic training for all others, and is typically followed with specialized training. In the Army, the additional training is called AIT. The additional training can be at the same place--OSUT (One Station Unit Training) or at an entirely different location.

All problems have solutions. If food is the only "problem" then you will have few problems indeed!

There is usually a very good selection of fruits and vegetables. You'll need to eat lotsa' beans and rice and oatmeal and potatoes and peanut butter!!! There is no probably--you WILL be put on a special diet because of your allergy (soy protein shakes?). You'll just about always eat an MRE for lunch meal, and have hot chow for breakfast and dinner. You can probably get kosher or halal certified MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), but you'll have to be careful with your allergy. There are also vegetarian MREs, but again, be careful with your allergy. If you intend to fast, plan ahead--and be sure to utilize a Chaplain for any special needs. During basic training, you will not be allowed to take food from the DFAC (dining facility). You will never have food in your sleep area.

I understand your concerns about eating meat. How do you feel about consuming fish, or eggs?

I'm in the US Army National Guard. It was in Afghanistan that I came to Islam! ) It was a Sufi friend over there who gave me the name Abdul-Hadi.

Biryani is a rice based dish, and it is found in many countries. I don't know what a "Muslim" food is, but biryani is enjoyed in many predominantly Muslim countries as well as in India. Link

I'm gonna' send you a PM.

            Peace brother,

Actually it would be for OCS. I am a college graduate so I would be applying as an officer. I have tried to look online to find the differences in the training with enlists but have come up short.

As for fish and eggs, I am vegan so I don't consume them. I am not sure if I have an allergy with eggs. The only reason why I know that I do with dairy is because when I have gone to restaurants, a couple of times they put it in when I explicitly told them not to. My body didn't react in a good manner.

Based on what you are telling me, my experiences shouldn't be horrible and it looks like there are tons of alternatives.

Thank you for all of info. I will be awaiting your PM
