Mazhar, you are correct; the verse I was looking for is 2888. Maulana Muhammad Ali's translation is

"And call not with Allah any other god. There is no God but He. Everthing will perish but He. (emphasis is mine) His is the judgment, and to Him you will be brought back."

I think that once you get into eternity, and concepts such as Ultimate Reality, there exists nothing but Allah.

"There is no God but He" is wrong, better there is no god but Hu, or Allah!

Any god is for the worship, even the god alone, but Allah is The Reality, and The Reading (Quran) calls for Reason and common sense!

La illaha illAllah, means there are no gods.
La ilahe ill-Allah = ?There is no GOD, only ALLAH?

?Set not up with ALLAH any GOD!" The KORAN, 2888

There is an interesting book by the Turkish author Ahmed Hulusi "Mohammed;s Allah", which can be downloaded/read here

ANYWAY I agree mostly with loxbox13

I am convinced that allah doesn't translate God

            Ileh = a Law
            Allah = The law

notice, when god speaks to us about rules/laws/haram and hallal etc.. he calls himself Allah
when speaks about generating life, descendance etc... he cals himself Rahman, that is close to Woumb / Matrix in pluriel
when he speaks about food / wealth etc.. he calls himself RABB

sometimes he calls himself ANA, like in surah TAHA when talking to moses, when he says it is me ANA allah etc..

so assoiating another ileh with allah simply means associting another Law with his LAW ( ALLAH )

very simple and very true, on top of it, it so logical, thank you for the examples!

              Peace.

              Peace.

It doesn't say God either; it says the god (allah). And the god has no partners, he is one god. So if you believe in gods, then none of those you believe in is the god. They only exist in your imagination, while the god is real.

              Abdelilah

After remembering 12106 I must retract my earlier comment.

And the majority of them do not have faith in the god except while they are idolaters.
              12106

So it is possible to have faith in the god while setting up partners with him (i.e. polytheism). Instead, 262 shouldn't be read on it's own but in conjunction with signs like 448.

The god does not forgive that partners be set up with him, and he forgives other than that for whom he pleases. Whoever sets up partners with the god has indeed invented a great sin.
              448

              Abdelilah

                Greetings and Peace, all group

                Questions are underlined.

262 Surely those who believe; and those who are Jewish, and the Nazarenes, and the Sabians, whoever of them believes in GOD and the Last Day and does good works; they will have their recompense with their Lord, and there is no fear upon them, nor will they grieve.

The passage does NOT state "GOD alone." GOD does not run out of words, and AQ is deliberate in every word. Does the above passage apply to polytheists or not?

986 Those who rejected from the people of the Book and the polytheists are in the fires of Hell abiding therein, those are the worst of creation.

In this passage, are polytheists lumped in with rejecters from the people of the Book--or are rejecters among the polytheists lumped with rejecters from the people of the Book?

AQ warns against polytheism--it is not part of the deen. Not everybody on earth subscribes to the deen in AQ. Are the warnings against polytheism only for the followers of the deen?

                ALLAH knows best.

                peace

                ~Abdul-Hadi

Polytheist are non believers by default. While for the people of the book they can be believers or not. Hence the Koran had to emphasize when talking about the people of the book. Its good you picked that up as most Muslims don't. There are many verses where the Koran talked about the believers and the non believers of the people of the book.

All believers are the same and all unbelievers are the same. But the communities they come from differ. The Koran divides communities based on faith. There are the communities of the Torah and Gospel and Koran, each has believrs and non believers. However pagan communities are all non believers. Of course we are talking about definitions and categorization. We don't know whats in people's hearts and minds.

If I am not mistaken, the same line of thought was adopted by Parwez, Dr Shabbir and Akhtar Sherazi when interpretting the Qur'an.

                  Interesting subject though. Thought provoking.

                    In chapter 262 we read

VERILY, those who have attained to faith , as well as those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Christians, and the Sabians -all who believe in God and the Last Day and do righteous deeds-shall have their reward with their Sust; and no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve.
Then in 986 chapter we read

Verily, those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture and (from among) those who associate gods with God shall be consigned to the Fire of Gehenna. Therein they shall abide. It is they who are the worst of all creatures.

How do you reconcile the two? Moreover, does this not negate plurality of belief as we read in 548

And unto thee have We vouchsafed this divine writ, setting forth the truth, confirming the truth of whatever there still remains of earlier revelations and determining what is true therein. Judge, then, between the followers of earlier revelation in accordance with what God has bestowed from on high, and do not follow their errant views, forsaking the truth that has come unto thee. Unto every one of you have We appointed a law and way of life. And if God had so willed, He could surely have made you all one single community but in order to test you by means of what He has vouchsafed unto, you. Vie, then, with one another in doing good works! Unto God you all must return; and then He will make you truly understand all that on which you were wont to differ.

On a side note, some Muslims who believe in the theory of abrogation, are quick to defend the above saying (for example) "Verse A abrogates verses B". Case closed!!

However, I am sure there must be a better explanation.

However, I am sure there must be a better explanation.

There is of course nothing called abrogation. Abrogation means the Koran is obsolete. The term "among them" means there are also those who are not "among them".

The Koran reminds the prophets that among those who surround him are enemies. It also tells the believers that among them there are those who listen to the hypocrites. It also said among the believers there are those who are stingy with their wealth. The Koran then responds by saying whose stingy is stingy on themselves. So the term among them indicates there are those who are not.

                      1. For the iniquity of the Jews We made unlawful for them certain (foods) good and wholesome which had been lawful for them;- in that they hindered many from Allah.s Way;-

161-162 That they took usury, though they were forbidden; and that they devoured men's substance wrongfully;- we have prepared for those among them who reject faith a grievous punishment. But those among them who are well-grounded in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what hath been revealed to thee and what was revealed before thee And (especially) those who establish regular prayer and practise regular charity and believe in Allah and in the Last Day To them shall We soon give a great reward.

Not all of them are alike; a party of the people of the Scripture stand for the right, they recite the Verses of God during the hours of the night, prostrating themselves in prayer. They believe in God and the Last Day; they enjoin Al-Ma'r?f and forbid Al-Munkar ; and they hasten in (all) good works; and they are among the righteous. And whatever good they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for God knows well those who are Al-Muttaq?n .(3113-115)

And there are, certainly, among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), those who believe in God and in that which has been revealed to you, and in that which has been revealed to them, humbling themselves before God. They do not sell the Verses of God for a little price, for them is a reward with their Lord. Surely, God is Swift in account. '(3199)'

7.159. Of the people of Moses there is a section who guide and do justice in the light of truth

So there are those who God is pleased with among them and there are those God is displeased with among them. There are those who are believers from among the people of the Book and there are those who are non believers from among them. That is why the Koran clarifies which section its talking about. But with polytheism they are all disbelievers if they believe in the polytheist theology.

The Koran also sees those around Muhammad as being either believers or hypocrites. And after poltheism faded and Islam spread we now have Muslims who are believers and Muslims who are not.

The Koran does not have a sectarian outlook. Whoever believes in God and the herefater he is a believer. Whatever religious identity he comes from is irrelevant. Most people follow religion out of upbringing and not necessarily faith.
