Chapter 2 2219 They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say "In them is great harm, and a benefit for the people; but their harm is greater than their benefit." And they ask you how much they are to give, say "The excess." It is thus that God clarifies for you the revelations that you may think. Chapter 5 590 O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and sacraments, and fortunes are an affliction used by the devil. You shall avoid him so that you may be successful. 591 The devil only wants to cause strife between you through intoxicants and gambling, and to repel you away from remembering God and from the contact prayer. Will you be deterred?

From what I think I know the proper translation is wine. Not intoxicants. But if God doesn't want you to drink wine then He probably doesn't want you to drink coffee or take anything that would cloud your mind in Amy way. Wether its a depressant, stimulant, uper or downer or I might mention tobacco.

I would say that coffee is a strong drug. I tried quiting but when back to it many times. I have to take the medication because of wich I feel like I need coffee. It does speed you up a little bit wich means that its an intoxicant. It makes you feell different.

I would say that if you are to follow the Quran you would nit drink coffee. I stil have some organic free trade coffee left and I might drink it till I change the medication or maybe I manage to quit earlier InshAllah.

    What are everyone else's thoughts?

It's not about how you feel, it's about impairing your judgment leading to sin and bad choices. Coffee doesn't do that.

With your line of thinking, tea would be banned, chocolate would be banned, vitamins would be banned etc because they all can make you feel better, more lively, calmer etc when it's all about what clouds your mind.

The Arabic word translated as "intoxicants" is 'khamar', I believe and it refers to clouding the mind/intellect, hence effecting your judgement/righteousness.

People may abuse anything and everything, including food. That does not mean that food is wrong, and not even that any food is wrong because it doesn't go well with every single person.

There is personal jedgment and observation of what goes right or not so right with onself. If coffee does'nt go well with you, then stop ip or reducir its consumption. Reduce the amount of food one eats, if one tends to eat too much, etc.

Ills of alcohol are socially notorious and known en general, so it makes sense that we should feel generally that we should not consume them. That is not the case of coffe, which, when it is good, natural coffee, has clear benefits, even though we should put a limit to how much we drink of it, just as with almost everything.

        Salaam

          Greetings and Peace, all group

Well, is it intoxicants or intoxication that we are to guard against? hmm Even water is an intoxicant. !

          http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication

Is alcohol an intoxicant? Fruit juices (such as orange juice) naturally contain alcohol.

          http//quezi.com/14067

The human body (or natural flora therein) make ethanol (alcohol) constantly. Bread contains alcohol. Even "nonalcoholic" beer <yuck> contains alcohol.

          http//www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/Controversies/Alcohol-A-Dangerous-Toxin-Foreign-to-Human-Bodies.html

It is not possible to avoid intoxicants. ISA, it is possible to avoid intoxication. It is a tenuous argument that an item is only an intoxicant when it causes inebriation, and not an intoxicant otherwise. By analogy, is fire only considered hot when it suits our individual position, and not considered hot otherwise?

The discussion of whether alcohol is prohibited has been discussed ad nauseum on other threads--no rehash on this post.

Back to the main point. Caffeine may make a person feel different, but it does not intoxicate. Eating makes a person feel different. Running or other exercise makes a person feel different. Participating in sports, waking up, etc...all of these make a person feel different. It isn't a bad thing. Caffeine doesn't impair judgement.

It is possible to switch to decaf/low-caf items, if there are concerns about caffeine intake. Surely too much of anything is not good; balance in all things.

          ALLAH knows best.

          peace

Here is one of many posts on alcohol. At the time of this link, it was 32 pages long. There are also articles on the main page.

To the best of my understanding, it is the intoxication and not the intoxicants that are to be guarded against, because intoxication can lead to lesser things. Note that "guarded against" does NOT equal prohibited. We are warned, counseled, and guided with good guidance--but abstaining from intoxication is not ordained. Abstaining from prayer while intoxicated is ordained.

443 O you who believe, do not approach the contact prayer while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying. Nor if you have had intercourse, unless traveling, until you bathe. And if you are ill, or traveling, or one of you has excreted feces, or you had sexual contact with the women, and could not find water, then you shall select from the clean soil; you shall wipe your faces and hands. GOD is Pardoning, Forgiving.

Although one is unlikely to savor whiskey by taking shots of it, if it doesn't conflict with an individual's understanding and commitments, there is nothing to stand in their way from doing so.

Beg pardon if too far off topic.

              ALLAH knows best.

              peace
