When you say you love God, is it out of fear or love? I think that true good is when you do good because you love God and others, not because you fear Hem. I think that if you do good just so you woukdnt go to hell in next life or prison in this then you are not sincierly good because that means that if there was no punishment you would be maybe bad.

It is our love for God which makes us love God's creation and stand up for the cause of God. As for fear; often we get wispers from Satan, which instill fear in us so we should not fear anyone or anything but offending our creator. I understand to worship God means to serve God. If you do it to please God, in return for a reward, well we all like to be loved and rewarded for our love. I do not do good to be spared hell, but I do not like to do anything wrong intentionally, as I do not want to end up in hell with Satan.
      Peace

For me fear God means fear the consequences of my actions. It is my actions that determine where I end up in the life hereafter. I can't hurt someone and expect to get away. At the end, need to own up and take responsibility and accountability for my actions I put myself in hell and earn my way to heaven. as God said, it is not easy.

there's only punishment if you do bad,or transgress God's limit. So it is not like you need to do good to avoid punishment. Sometimes there is no thought process involved in doing something good. example if I see a child fall, my immediate reaction would be to help and comfort the child.

doing good deeds just so that you could tip the scale on the good side at the end - hey, what's wrong with that? personally, i prefer heaven. and i have no shame in majorly sucking up to God. oh, there are times when i just have to stifle my anger and bite my tongue till i bleed and i sure would like to think that i earned some major brownie points for doing that.

what about doing good unconditionally from within you?
Wouldn't your character be looked at? Being unconditional in your ideology, not just doing good things to get rewarded.

and hey, Whether you go to heaven or hell, you get recompensed for Exactly what you.....
and Of course the fear of God and the love of God would both be an incentive to do good.

ok - let's take an atheist who feeds the hungry. now is his character better than a believer who feeds the hungry because of his love of God? better than a man who feeds the hungry doing what God commands him to do if he can't fast? better than a man who wants God's blessings?

In that case the atheist's character is better, since he's feeding the hungry for the hungry person's sake, not to get a deity's liking

Please understand, i wouldn't be talking about athiests vs. believers,

which would be better, a believer who does good asking nothing in return, or a believer who does good just for the rewards?

which would be better in character and sincerity?

I guess the best is when you do good deed just because you know it is the right thing, or best thing, to do.
And when you know it is the right thing to do, and you do it, without expecting anything back, when you do it purely for the good of it, unconditionally, when you help, spread goodness, you consequently feel very good in yourself, and so receive it back.
