So I have always assumed it was the good deeds being more than bad ones that gets us into heaven but these verses have confused me.

" 414 And whoever disobeys God and His messenger, and transgresses His limits, He will admit him to a Fire in which he abides eternally, and he will have a humiliating retribution."

I would assume the breaking of inheritance laws stated here for example would be another sin and thus if enough good deeds have outweighed it on the day of judgement that it would be forgiven. But the way its worded on how some has done it indicates tht one will receive hell regardless of good deeds or not.

I know kufr and shirk are ones that cancel out good deeds but this doesn't seeem to be either of them.

Though there is this verse that makes me notice that raising our voice to the Prophet would as well which makes me question that idea

"O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the prophet, nor shall you speak loudly at him as you would speak loudly to each other, lest your works become nullified while you do not perceive." (492)

Yet we have the following verses that tell us how we are judged even if we have unrepented sins that it will be outdone by a good deed. Amongst other verses relating to the day of judgment I have seen these

78 And the weighing on that Day will be the true (weighing). So, as for those whose scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise).

79 And as for those whose scale will be light, they are those who will lose themselves for their wrongful behavior with Our Ayat.

Does that refer to being heavy against the bad deeds?

Anyways i'm now rather confused on the day of jusdgement. Can some one better explain? Thanks

Well the question i'm asking is rather simple. In the Quran it states that your good deeds will be judged against your bad ones yet there are verses that state if you do a certain sin it will mean you will go to hell thus seeming almost contraditory as only Shirk, Kufr, and apparently shouting at the prophet cause you to lose all your good deeds therefore for some sins when you see it state you will suffer a great punishment, what if your good deeds have outweighed that?

i see it differently. i could have saved so many lives helping so many people in so many ways but if i hurt one soul then i have to answer to that soul. you think it would be 'just' if I don't pay for hurting one soul because i saved 99 out of 100 souls? i can't get away from owning up, taking responsibility and accountability for my deeds. and i can't get away transgressing God's limits/laws just because i have done all these good things. if i break the inheritance law or divorce law or any other laws spelled out by God, then yes I have to pay for transgressing that law. i don't see it as losing the good deeds but paying for the bad deeds depending on what bad thing i did and if/how others were affected by my deeds.

let's take the inheritance law. ok - i transgressed it. now, would God look at my all my many good deeds but forgive me for transgressing this law? what if the person who i wronged didn't suffer at all and didn't care much? sure God could forgive me for that as i am sure i will have a non-arrogant excuse for transgressing God's laws.... but what if the person felt very hurt by my actions leading to hard feelings and such causing frictions in the family? would you think forgiving me would be 'just' in the second scenario?

i believe that justice will be rendered on the Day of Judgment when the good deeds are weighed against the bad.

i believe that justice will be rendered on the Day of Judgment when the good deeds are weighed against the bad.

But then that would mean that even one bad deed will deed one to hell.

                Also consider this verse

"And whoever disobeys God and His messenger, and transgresses His limits, He will admit him to a Fire in which he abides eternally, and he will have a humiliating retribution." (414)

Here it states that simply disobeying God and sinning and such will send you to hell. Thus if one were to look at it on its own, one would think that even sinning once will have you hell bound which is in many ways a Christian concept. Then you have verses of good deeds erasing bad ones and the verse about how you are judged for your good deeds being heavy will have you go into heaven.

Therefore where we have the contradiction in this is that if one were to believe that you would be punished for such a sin then it would contradict the idea of good deeds erasing bad deeds on the idea of good vs bad judgment. Course the only other idea I can think of is that one is sent to hell for a while and punished for those sins and then when done is brought to heaven, but the ones who believe hell is permanent would say this is contradictory to and I myself am unsure if hell is permanent or not

                Anyways what do you think?

                  There is one problem though

"And whoever disobeys God and His messenger, and transgresses His limits, He will admit him to a Fire in which he abides eternally, and he will have a humiliating retribution." (414)

Here this states similarly to that verse of inheritance where it makes it seem that even one sin outways ALL good deeds and therefore you go to hell. This is where it is contradictory as we are said good deeds outweigh badones and we are judged on our scale of good deeds being heavy on the day of judgment.

                  So what do you think?

Well I am officially more scared now as I just saw this verse

"O you who believe, obey God, and obey the messenger. And do not render your work in vain. (4733)

This scares me honestly...while I am hoping that the last part refers to the previous verse which is talking about those who are kaffirs will have their good deeds erased, but I am afraid that this rather refers to simplying doing a sin will erase a good deed -_- feeling hopeless if this is true...

Did you see 'transgresses his limits' in there? You will only get punished if you go beyond the limit. It is fairly difficult to even do that as it requires you to go out of your way to be evil. There is a verse saying that none but the most wretched/unfortunate go to Hell.

But a transgression is literally another way of saying "sin" which obviously it adds onto your list of bad deeds. For example one may crave pork and give in and eat it or even feel lazy and not pray one or some of his prayers. Thus we are still at a contradiction as to why God that our good deeds are put up against our bad yet we hear verses that assure hell such as these. I have a theory that these might refer to without the idea of Good Deeds being in the equation, and that the sins that don't mention any punishment such as the clothing verse of 2430-31 won't send you to hell even if you didn't do a good deed to balance that out while for those other ones one would indeed need to.

Anyways even if we were to take that verse that only the most wretched go to hell, one has to remember that God has different standards of what is considered the most wretched. A regular man might not see a polytheist as most wretched for example, yet God considers that the worst crime ever.

elektro OOOh! ( For a moment you had me scared and feeling hopeless. Then I remembered God's words in Surah 262 and Sura 569 Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

Well I understand that, but I wanna know how those verses work with each other in regards to good deeds balancing out bad ones or vice versa vs one bad deed erasing all good deeds as the text MIGHT appear to be. Seems contradictory for the moment but I assume there is a way around this.

Are you keeping a log book? If yes, then can you be sure you counted every single good & bad deed - some you mightn't even be aware you are doing until later on in your spiritual development.Only God knows how our good and bad deeds will balance out on Judgement Day. Perhaps the way round it to focus on the above verse.

Where you might be confused is that those verses where God talks about 'exceeding the limits' are always speaking about the final score.

Certain extremely evil deeds which are not repented will wipe out all others e.g. killing a believer (mu'min) on purpose. However kufr and shirk are not bad 'deeds' but entire ways of living, keep that in mind.

Let's give an example. Someone is a billionaire disbelieving magnate who made their money on riba. They donate some of their money to charity in a massive public event to look good but they hoard the rest. In this case, the fact that they did charity is totally outweighed by the fact that they acquired the money via riba. That would nullify their deeds because while they did do some good, they did it to support a way of life (deen) that is totally against God. That is the essence of 'disobeying Allah and the messenger' and transgressing the limits - the verse is talking about when people are in a constant state of disobeying, not when they disobey here and there.

Whereas if you believe, submit and do good deeds then God tends far towards purifying you and forgiveness. Remember the reason we are on Earth now is to test whether we submit to God or satan. How you wipe your ass is minor in comparison.

I just think that disobeying God/his Messenger is such a weighty crime that no amount of good deeds can possibly outweigh it. Sure we are judged on our good deeds, but we are also judged on our bad deeds, and disobeying happens to be a bad deed that cannot be outweighed by any good deed.

well this is what I believe in that good deeds and bad deeds will balance each other out, but I just wanna figure out how this contradiction works.

Whereas if you believe, submit and do good deeds then God tends far towards purifying you and forgiveness. Remember the reason we are on Earth now is to test whether we submit to God or satan. How you wipe your ass is minor in comparison.

Gotta disagree as God indeed does considering Shirk as a type of sin and not a state

"And those who do not call on any other god with God; nor do they take the life which God has made forbidden, except in justice; nor do they commit adultery. And whoever does will receive the punishment. The retribution will be doubled for him on the Day of Judgment and he will abide in it in disgrace. Except for the one who repents and believes and does good works, for those God will replace their sins with good, and God is Forgiving, Merciful." -2568-70

Its compared to those other two which are clear sins and not state. Anyways I understand that but the Quran has not mentioned at all that such sins wipe out good deeds and has clearly stated what actually does such as

"Those who have rejected and repelled from the path of God, and stood against the messenger after the guidance has been made clear for them, they will not harm God in the least, and He will nullify their works. (4722)

This is an example of kufr there that causes it to expell all their work. Otherwise I don't see anything that is a sin that can expel ALL of your regular good deeds. As for the "Transgresses the limits" that part clearly means sinning at all and isn't talking about a constant state as nothing is indictating at such and thus fore if one were to take it as is, it would seem like any sin one does wipes out all deeds if one were to take the part that states you will abide in hell.

Therefore it still sounds contradicting and the only thing I think so far is these might be referring to sins before considering the good deeds that might balance them out.

As for the example you put up, the way i'd think is that it wouldn't cancel ALL his deeds there as he's done good stuff possibly like raising his children well, helped people, and many other stuff but rather he would not get any reward for that donation due to the way he got it originally but not ALL of his sins I wouldn't think be outweighed for simply donating using riba money. Course I may be wrong.

I just think that disobeying God/his Messenger is such a weighty crime that no amount of good deeds can possibly outweigh it. Sure we are judged on our good deeds, but we are also judged on our bad deeds, and disobeying happens to be a bad deed that cannot be outweighed by any good deed.

But God has said that good deeds ERASE sins and that good deeds count 10 times higher than a bad one thus yes indeed good deeds outweigh bad weighs unless stated otherwise as in 4732.

"Those who have rejected and repelled from the path of God, and stood against the messenger after the guidance has been made clear for them, they will not harm God in the least, and He will nullify their works."

My issue is trying to figure out that contradiction /

Perhaps "good deeds" in general are distinguished from the specific sin of disobeying God and the Messenger.

but as 414 already proved that same line stating one will go to hell for doing such sins is also available for that verse that talks about all sins. Thusfore why it almost looks like we have a contradiction. So far i'm leaning towards this all meaning without the use of good deeds to tip the sale in your favour and cleansing these sins.
