As salaamu alaikum! My name is Jennifer and I am a Puerto Rican Muslimah who loves in the U.S. I reverted to Islam about 6 years ago and am still very new. Unfortunately, I was initially introduced into a sect and went about my religion in that manner for almost 3 years. After that, I found that I just wanted to be Muslim. I don't want to attribute myself to a sect. As a result of my decision, I am now very confused as to what I am really supposed to be doing instead of what I was told to do. I fear that I may be blind-following men. Of course I know what my 5 pillars are and uphold them the best that I can. What I am really having trouble with is finding the proper English translation of the Quran. I am especially interested in the verse regarding hijab. I have been covering my head since I reverted to Islam 6 years ago, but I don't necessarily believe that I should. As I have come to find out, covering of the head is more of a cultural affair that was carried out years ago and continues today. What I am getting from the verse in the Quran is that I am to cover my bosom. Can somebody please help me? I don't want to make the wrong decision. I want to do right in front of Allah and I would love to be able to explain to my 2 beautiful daughters why mommy covers her head without having to say that 'I think I'm doing what Allah wants me to.'

And let them not reveal their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their women, or those maintained by their oaths, or the male servants who are without need, or the child who has not yet understood the composition of women. And let them not strike with their feet in a manner that reveals what they are keeping hidden of their beauty. And repent to God, all of you believers, that you may succeed.

It's a good translation to begin, but I reccomend to use more translations and best is ofcourse to search for the keywords in The Quran itself to have the best definition of the words.

As for my current belief. The Quran does not explicitly command to cover your hair. However, it does state for women to basically, take their covers/shawls and cover their bosom/chest area 2431This verse later states something like, they shall not show their ornaments , except to so and so. and more enlightlining what this ornament might be would be referring to that they don't strike the ground (e.g strut) intentially to show off their ornaments (e.g outlines of body figure under clothes).Also, another Hint what this ornaments might be would be be the commandment to cover the chest area just talked about before...
Also, Notice that only Women have ornaments, Not Men. Both Men and Women could grow out their hair. Hair therefore, would be controversial, and maybe would count as a partial ornament, if not, at all as an ornament..
Also, Modesty and righteous work are other things to keep in mind. If Wearing a controversial religious covering is going to hinder your chances of getting a job, where you could make an income, and whereby you could spend and do righteous works, then i would suggest take off the head covering. And Modesty? You could still be Modest and not cover your hair.Recommended readings

As far as I can recall, I found it nowhere in the Qur'an where a person is asked to cover their head/hair.
As a side note, its interesting to point out that you can find it in Bible
Holy Bible 1 Corinthians 11 (2-12)
I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head?it is the same as having her head shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.
A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
As it looks to me, the idea is that there is a hierarchy like this

-Man
-WomenWomen keeps her hair covered as a symbol of the hierarchical superiority of man.

Wow...that's pretty big considering that's what I've believed in for 6 years. Can you provide Quranic proof for the above statement?

Thank you all for all of the information you've all provided. I've have been comparing the Arabic text of the Quran with the English language and have come to find out for myself, the same that all of you have told me.... Allah never commands the woman to cover her head. I'm very nervous about taking it off because I've worn it everyday for the last 6 years of my life. I've even gone to work with it. It feels like everything I was taught was a lie -[

Personally i don't see anything wrong with summarising the major points.

i don't agree totally. let's take fasting for instance - especially given it is the month of ramadan. yes, it is from the koran. search fasting and see how many verses you will find in the koran addressing fasting? God simply states fasting is enjoined as it was before and for what purpose. if it is too difficult then, you feed the needy. so is fasting really a major point or is being a righteous person?
the major point/theme is to believe in God, the last Day and to be a good person, doing good deeds, living a moral life. over and over again this is what God says in the koran. Sura 262 "surely those who believe, and those wo are Jews, and the Nazarenes, and the Sabians, whoever believes in God and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear upon them, nor shall they grieve.
fasting is merely a means of achieving the goal.
