My head is spinning from all these variations

I am quite frustrated as I read all the threads on the "interpretation of how to perform salaat." Some say 2, some say 3, some say 5...
I do not believe God is chaotic at all...and the answer MUST be clear as to how many times to pray and exactly what to say.
Prayer is a vital part of Islam, yet it seems no one can agree on how often it should be performed or even how.
I know I am very new at this, but I have to admit that seeing the amount of discord over this subject is depressing.

The most important criteria is submission and loyalty to GOD Alone. HE teaches/explains HIS scripture.
I can understand your frustration and confusion, but do not follow anyone, follow the Koran .Keep what you are doing ( 5 or 3 or 2) until you see evidence to change.
When you perform "Salat" ask your creator, keep doing exactly what you are doing now. Only change when you see evidence from Koran as you are studying and relying on your creator to help you. HE knows your sincerity. Trust in HIM Alone.

What's the use / benefit of people praying at the same time saying/wishing exactly the same thing?

'Standardization of Prayer' doesn't the term sounds ridiculous to you?
Perhaps there's 'something wrong' on your hypothesis at the foundational level..
Change the 'foundation' and you can build a better new house for yourselves..The best verses ever on Praying... really explains everything..
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them! for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Right...let me clarify that I don't know why it is so hard for me to remember how free my words were when praying before becoming a Sunni Muslim.
Islam is what I am attempting learn now.

bravoBut would point out the ayah 262, that applies to all people irrespective of what they do as long as it isn't shirk or they are not Zalimeen.
