Is their really a religion called "islam"?
-
Is there really a substance in the Qur'an why there would be a religion called islam?
In my opinion, the concept of "surrendering/isl?m (meaning not 'submitting ' - but simply surrendering as waving a white flag in an ego kind of war)" is the only straight path to walk on through life. I see no substance why this would suggest a specific religion (as in latin "religio" to be bound with something) organized by man.
"wa-man yabtagi gayr al-isl?mi d?nan...
and anyone who seeks for a path without surrenderence..."
(385)My conclusion
Surrenderence (in arabic isl?m) is simply one of many concepts in the 1400 year old arabic lecture of guidance and it was this word(!) that certain groups found suitable to wrap up in a (most literally) religious form and treated it no different from the catholic church - making believe that one is dependent on a human establishment. And God does not collaborate with people in the sense that we invented it (73).Peace!
-
Peace be upon you,
I agree, the word "islam" only means submission, with the implication that that leads to Peace.
There is no such thing as "religion", only the God's system.

Salaamun alaikum,
I would disagree with this. Allah specifically taught us that the 'deen' in His sight is 'al-islaam' (3/19) and that we are named 'al-muslimeen'. I don't think that the name can be translated without losing its some of its essence.
thanks and salaam.
-
the 'deen' in His sight is 'al-islaam'
Correct! Though, God never taught us to organize something particular in order to claim this "deen" is the only religion accepted by God.
If that would be the case, it would make no sense how jews and christians who...
"...(1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve."

(R Khalifa)"wa-man yabtagi gayr al-isl?mi d?nan...
wa-man = "and who"
yabtagi = "seeks"
gayr = "without, except"
al-isl?m = "the surrenderence"
d?nan = (acc.) "A path(/'religion')"God says that one is free to search for any "outer" path as long as it's purpouse is in harmony with the surrendering/al-isl?m on the inside.

Salaamun alaikum,
El-AzizCorrect! Though, God never taught us to organize something particular in order to claim this "deen" is the only religion accepted by God.
Ah, to organise something, I say yes He did. To claim that the organisation is THE ONLY way, I say no He didn't.
El-Aziz God says that one is free to search for any "outer" path as long as it's purpouse is in harmony with the surrendering/al-isl?m on the inside.
I disagree with your terminology with the 'outer' bit, but I see your point. No matter what you call yourself, its your essence which counts.
Dr FazlPride-shedding" is ISLAM, the Way To Salam!
I prefer this definition of al-islaam, i.e. 'the way to salaam' very much. Much more powerful than 'the submission'.

Think about this, was the human being created to SERVE the God, or to be a SERVANT of the God? My answer is to SERVE the God.
What I am getting at is that we were created to SERVE a purpose, not to be in a state of BEING, but a state of BECOMING.
We were created for ACTION, not to be THINGS.
AHHH, I cannot grasp the thoughts that came to me last night. I had it so clear but did not think about it until I saw this post from you. I will try to remember what came to me last night and get back to you.

Salaamun alaikum Kyle,
What I am getting at is that we were created to SERVE a purpose, not to be in a state of BEING, but a state of BECOMING.
We were created for ACTION, not to be THINGS.I get what you're saying, Kyle. I do agree with you that Islam is a process (i.e becoming) but this doesn't contradict the fact that we need an identification in the world. Lets say we have an equation '3x(squared)+12x+14'. We then say 'y=3x(squared)+12x+14'. From that point on, we can just call it 'y' and not the lengthy earlier equation. Same with 'al-muslimeen'. It's a very loaded word, denoting one follows Ibrahim's culture which as we know, is very deep.
Being doesn't contradict becoming, brother. 'Al-muslimeen' is being in a certain posture which allows a person to orientate himself towards 'salaam'. He then keeps becoming deeper and deeper immersed in imaan (which does increase, if you see the Quraan)
AHHH, I cannot grasp the thoughts that came to me last night. I had it so clear but did not think about it until I saw this post from you. I will try to remember what came to me last night and get back to you.
Please do, brother. I'd be very grateful, as always.

Salaam mquran,
'Al-muslimeen' is being in a certain posture which allows a person to orientate himself towards 'salaam'.
And I would have thought that it was the other way round... after reaching 'salaam' , would allow one to be called muslim. In other words, it's earned, not just named. Not sure if I'm clear.
-
Salaamun alaikum Zenje,
I take your point. Why I'd disagree with this deduction is because of contextual use of the various 'islaam' derivatives in Al-Quraan.
3/83 for example, uses 'aslama karaha' (orientating oneself towards peace forcibly). I think the word ur looking for to replace 'salam' here is 'amn' like in 3/84 where ur imaan leads you to submit.
thanks and salaam.

I agree and Id' like to add this
- In it are clear signs maqam of Abraham. And whoever enters it will be secure. And God is owed from mankind hijju Albayt, whoever can make a path to it. And whoever rejects, then God has no need of the worlds.
I consider albayt as the system of the God which is Islam and whoever enters it will be secure.

peace mq, marie, all,
like in 3/84 where ur imaan leads you to submit.
I dont see 384 as a sequential statement, i.e. amn leads to slm.
I consider albayt as the system of the God which is Islam and whoever enters it will be secure.
Nice & simple isn't it.

Wakas I dont see 384 as a sequential statement, i.e. amn leads to slm
Ok, how would you see the ayat itself then ? It does start with 'amanna' and ends with 'muslimoon'. Perhaps you see a different conceptual relationship ?
Marie I consider albayt as the system of the God which is Islam and whoever enters it will be secure
.Yeah. 'man dakhalahu kaana ameena' In other words, you enter awwala bait first, THEN you achieve a state of amn (interestingly, its not silm but amn).
I think a diagram would be good at this stage )
-
peace mq,

384 is stating a list of beliefs, then it ends with "and to him we are muslimoona/compliant". How does that equate to a sequential process which ends up with becoming 'muslimoona'? It doesn't.
If a member of the Labour party states a list of things they believe in, and ends with "and to Tony Blair we are compliant". This does not necessarily mean each one of those beliefs were a sequential process until they were compliant to Blair. No the person is just stating their beliefs and their position, not a sequence of transitions.Compare 384 with 397 in which "In it are clear signs maqam/position of Abraham. And whoever enters it will be secure." is stated. In this is a clear sequence, i.e. one enters it then they will be secure.

Salaamun alaikum Wakas,
I take your point and I think u've presented a very good argument with 3/97. Thing is, 3/97 is a conditional thing, if you enter Ibrahim's position, you shall attain 'amn'. 3/84 to me is an equational thing. If you have imaan in Allah, you will be in islaam. This would make sense rationally to me as well. Imaan is conviction in something. If you truly have imaan in Allah, your relationship to Him would be one of submission.
of course, i fully respect your view and appreciate this discussion.

I agree.
islam can lead to imaan, thus when one has imaan they can also be said to be in islam/compliance.
In this sense we are saying the same thing. However, for my part, a clarification...
One who is in islam/compliance cannot necassarily be said to have imaan. This is proven by 4914. This ayat to me implies a sequence, thus I disagreed with your sequential statement. I agree with your equational statement though.
I think I recall us having this discussion before.

Ah yeah, there is a sequence here for a person who wasn't a mumin before. If he complies with ad-deen al-islaam, then yes, it's possible that soon his heart will be open to imaan/conviction. That's my reading of 49/14.
I think I recall us having this discussion before
We did, yeah, but I always appreciate a refresher course. Give me a call sometime, man
