Hi All,
I am a new submitter. And, i am proud of being one. Unfortunately I am reluctant to reveal this to my family and society in general for fear of social backlash.
I grew up in a traditional sunni background, child of Indian Parents living in Saudi Arabia. My parents were not so 'strict' Muslims as orthodox Sunni scholars claim. Emphasis was always put on 'Enjoy life, do good things, and most importantly -> do not forget to fear god'. My parents never prayed and I beleive that it was due to a little bit of ignorance and also laziness.
As a child in school, i was introduced to the world of Prayer by my grandmother. She made me memorize what needs to be said during prayer. I was never in a habit of reading Quran as it was not my mother tongue and I never knew much of Arabic. I instead read a lot of literature, school textbooks etc which were all english. I bought a few books stories of the prophets by ibn kathir in English, the noble quran (an english translation of the quran verses etc.).I started praying 4 times a day.
After some time i left the 'path of islam' stopped praying etc since life became busier. I felt bad that life had changed for me, and felt bad thinking that i was moving away from god.
Every time during ramadan however, i used to observe fasting for the month, without salah. I started reading the Quran and its translation and decided to understand what it contained. It was during ramadan, that I came to encounter Quranism. I was instantly floored.
Previously, I didnt understand how God who is the most merciful (even more than our own mother), would ask us to do stupid things kill people who didnt beleive, ask us to not touch dogs bathe in a special way if we did, ask us to grow a beard but cut our moustache, put on a skull cap, make us tailor our pants above our ankles, and also ask us to treat women inhumanely and be what i felt was unjust.
I had questions What would happen to a native in a remote island who had never heard of allah and the prophet when he dies? would he also go to hell? i kept on asking whoever i could but could get no reasonable explanation.
Finally, now i knew.... God never asked us to do those things... people did.... I am happy that i found out... I have no fear any more, my mind is at peace. No more guiltiness for doing things that God made legal, but people made illegal. However, I am afraid that my own society which is full of superstition/ wrong beliefs from hadith and other sources would cast me out. I have disclosed my beleif to my parents and they do not disapprove.... but afraid of what would happen to the rest of my family when they find out. My wife had a tough time trying to understand and for the time being i have burnt my fingers at the first go and have decided on not revealing more for now. I just hope that in Future more awareness would be brought amongst ppl of the world and they leave their traditions and read the quran and try to understand.
I think that this forum is a wonderful way in which we can discuss our beleifs and follow the best path. I hope to use this forum as a way to strngthen my faith and find out what is right and what is wrong. handshake

Im at free-minds for 1 year , and i confess i lerned more in this year here than the back 10years of reverted islam i had.. this is like and airport, an international space where we shere our views even ifeach one of us might be diferent in many Quran interpretations, majority follow God Alone ..and with a lot of respect and brotherwood we keep improving and upgrading our knowledge.

You will find you may be ostracized by those who know you, some will tell you that shaitan has turned you from the path but you only have to be true to yourself though and you are not alone. I have even been told I should be killed by my neighbours! brickwall

Well, they were right you know. In an 'Islamic' state you'd be tried for apostasy and then be given the axe voodoo
(Though there is a difference of opinion to whether a female apostate should be given death or life in prison - if she doesn't repent and revert back to Sunni Islam peace)

Salaam and welcome. That makes two of us...at first I thought I was trying to find a way out of fasting, as it is difficult for me due to stomach issues. The more I read and asked questions, the more I realized that I wasn't trying to get out of anything...that Allah was guiding me to the truth, and during Ramadan at that!
