Dear all,
I cannot understand the commandment that those who go to Haj should abstain from hair cut until their offering has reached its destination? And those who have to have their cut are expected to expiate by fasting etc as if abstaining from hair cut is a major spiritual progress. What can be the logic behind it?
May God increase our knowledge.

If you read the articles and follow the discussions here you will see that many refer to Hajj as debate, which we believe over time came to turn into a ritual.
If Hajj is debate where muslims get together and debate their issues, the cutting hair and shaving head would be meaningless. I looked at a selected phrase from the verse below and checked various root meanings of the words and I can see that it can mean something quite different in contrast to its traditional attributed meanings.
4827 Laqad sadaqa Allahu rasoolahu alrruya bialhaqqi latadkhulunna almasjida alharama in shaa Allahu amineena muhalliqeena ruoosakum wamuqassireena la takhafoona faAAalima ma lam taAAlamoo fajaAAala min dooni thalika fathan qareeban
4827 Truly did Allah fulfil the vision for His Messenger. ye shall enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, with minds secure, heads shaved, hair cut short, and without fear. For He knew what ye knew not, and He granted, besides this, a speedy victory.
If you want to look at the root words yourself, look up Kaf-Sad-Ra, Ra-Alif-Sin, Ha-Lam-Kaf.
I think this verse is talking about the fulfilment of the messengers vision when muslims entered into the submission to the restrictions according to the way GOD meant the universal order of things to be, in security gathering in a circle with restrained, cool minds without fear...
A longer verse describes similar things in 2196. Which we know refers to Hajj where muslims suppose to debate their issues in such a gathering. Here often you will see Huda is quoted as offering, but if you check the Qur'an you will see this is often relating to guidance.
For traditional muslims this will seem totally off the wall, and what I have done here is a first stab at the issue and by no means is conclusive. However, by your own admission it defies logic as for what reason one should shave their head and cut their hair but not restrain themselves by keeping cool in a debate?

The path to make sense of these issues is to study key words such as Salat, Zakah, Hajj, Huda etc. progressively from the Qur'an and then it will begin to make a lot more sense.

What I am looking for is that God's commandments should be rational. And as I see from your posts your approach is just the same. I want to find a way out of this bothering puzzle. It is obvious that cutting hair is meant to be physical(all translations have it that way plus a person with an illness on the head is exempted from the command) But this does not make any sense to me. I want to state again that I need help here!
- And complete the Pilgrimage and the visit for God. But, if you are prevented, then make what is affordable of donation, and do not shave your heads until the donation reaches its destination; but whoever of you is ill or has an affliction to his head, then he may redeem by fasting or giving a charity or a sacrifice

Can we look at the 'shaving head' scenario in a different light?
Rather than taking it literally in a physical manner, can we make sense of it symbolically? In 2196 I dont believe that affliction to the head means a physical problem, rather a mental one. If it is viewed in that sense then shaving of the head could mean becoming humble, reducing one's 'mental stature' or pride in one's mental prowess.I dont have quranic evidence to point this way, just an observation. I have still to look at this, as you correctly stated Ash Shuura, we need to gain correct understanding of Salaat, Zakaat and Hajj from the Quran.
We can only pray that God will guide is in the right direction.

I have not studied this subject properly, but if it is true that the arabic words state "cutting of hair", then my thought process would start by thinking about how many people are already bald. We can think of the argument used against the sunnis regarding growing beards, many Asians do not have facial hair. So we can likewise reason the command for cutting hair.
Why do people cut thier hair? It is REMOVING EXCESS that we do not need. The God tells us over and over about ECXESSES. We are not to take EXCESS in intoxicants, we are to spend the EXCESS of our money, etc.
I have no understanding yet of the verses, but those are just some thoughts out loud.
