What exactly IS the "QIBLAH"??

In my investigation of Salat I have come across an interesting point regarding whether prostration is physical or not. I can see the arguments of both sides but had not been able to find any evidence to strongly support one side or another.
One thing I think that might answer this is that there is a direction called the "QIBLAH" in verses 2142-145. This qiblah is a direction and sounds like a physical direction on casual inspection. What is this qiblah? Is there any evidence that it is related to Salat or prayer in the Quran?
This is an important question because I can't seem to find a link between QIBLAH and SALAT at all except for what tradition says. The verse says that others have differing qiblahs and that this was an important issue to test believers.
WHAT IS THE QIBLAH AND IS IT RELATED TO PRAYER, from any evidence in the Quran ??
