Been thinking about this lately, does it realy have anything at all to do with God, or is it simply one causing devision in the society at large?

Looking at the word in the quran - can it be linked somehow to God?

    confused

    Anybody! Thanks.......In advance

      Salam
in my view, yes it has to do with God. For this point shirk is a big sin and God will not forgive it-in opposite to other sins.

        Salaam 357,

When the word "shirk" is used ALONG WITH the word "Allah" or "Rabb" then it surely has to do with Allah, otherwise no. This is how I understand.

May Allah increase us in knowledge and guide us to His only path pr

sure, I think everyone has shirk (besides Allah) and do shirk. It doesn't always have to be negative, it's only negative if we do shirk with Allah.

I think shirk is very misunderstood. Its much bigger than we assume. Much bigger.

I have done some research on this. Shrik is a theology, not a behavior. You don't commit shirk, you believe in shirk.

I think this misconception that many have about shirk has to do with this failure to see shirk as a theology. There is also some misunderstanding of what the Arab pagans of Mecca actually believed. Some believed that the Meccans believed in one supreme God. This is the furthest from the truth. The below post shows many shirk traditions. They are similar. Shirk is a mockery of the divine world and trying to bring that world to the human domain.

              http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=9603937.msg299923#msg299923

Also this is an excellent lecture about shirk and how it differs from monotheism.

I agree shirk isn't always negative, i think -according to the quran itself, but shirk against the spirit of God (instead of doing things to bring humanity closer to do the opposite) is what causes chaos and ultimately leads to destruction of good.

I don't think i could comprehend it as a theology -it doesn't add up.

Shirk is not forgivable and only thing not forgivable are actions giving bad results - surely and not simply a belief in th mind as that doesn't cause any change to God or the universe.

hmm is there any bad action that we humans don't mind it being done over and over -no, if we don't mind some action then it is no longer considered bad and thus doesn't require forgiveness.

Shirk is practissed by most people one time or another sometimes knowingly or in ignorance or with a blind eye to it - but overall we may be All Godly.

With respect the quran talks about things that are happening and not a theology, or dinosaures, that have long since dissapeared or things which may dessapear.

                  peace Bigmo.

                    Salaam,

I think the simpliest to understand this, is if you look at the meaning of the word.
As per my current knowledge we are doing shirk if we add "something" to "something" else.

Sometimes people understand it as "setting up equals with Allah" when it has to do with Allah.
I think the word "equals" is not correct here. It does not have to be equals, less then equal is also shirk. Thus everything > 0 what you join with Allah is shirk with Allah.

                    Salaam,
                    Bender

Bad things people do are based on interest. Peple are selfish so they behave in a certain manner, they are dishonest and greedy so they behave in a certain matter.

The question asked is whats shirk, at least what the Quran means by it. The best way to understand that is to go to the mushriks themselves. I am looking at it from the Quranic point of view of what is meant by shirk.

It says those who take other gods besides God. It says these gods can not benefit those who pray and worship them. It says that God is the creator of the universe. It says these god did not create a thing. It says etc etc etc. I am not sure what you mean. Did you read my thread i posted? Or did you listen to the lecture I posted? Its all theology.

The main question is what does it mean to take another god with Allah? Let us read Surah 18( The cave); 32-44 which gives us clues how shirk is committed by ordinary people.
                            I am only going to paste parts of this surah to higlight this issue. As for the rest everyone can read for themselves with their preferred translation;
34 "more wealth have I than you, and more honour and power among men." .....
later the same wronged one says
43 Would I had never ascribed partners to my Lord and Cherisher!"
And the parable ends with this reminder
44 There, the (only) protection comes from Allah, the True One. He is the Best to reward, and the Best to give success.
According to this parable which is given to us to reflect shirk comes in several forms including; when one give's importance to power, people or wealth.
Munafiqun are those people who put up the appearance of being submitters, but in fact give much importance to maintaining a hold on power and their reputation in the community.
They make themselves equal to Allah by succeeding in deceiving the majority to follow them and their ideas. As I understand it that is why both the mushriq and munafiq come under the category of people who will not be forgiven and who would dwell in the lowest secton of hell.
Maybe the worldly wise people should think twice? hmm

Mushrik means HYPOCRITE, and in QURAAN this word is used for those, who were double faced and tried to trick MUHAMMED(s) by saying they brought IMAAN but in reality they were still KAFIR and unfortunately most mushrik died as KAFIR.

Of course, but we all i think fall into the fold , even if it is temporarily - when ever we go in opposition to God - as He can see us not following him , but something other.......even though we may regret it after.

Each time we go in oposstion to the spirit of God.........it is shirk, as our master then isn't God, is he?

Let us try and stay clean, most of the time at least............

As I understand it that is why both the mushriq and munafiq come under the category of people who will not be forgiven and who would dwell in the lowest secton of hell.
Maybe the worldly wise people should think twice? hmm

This is implicit reasoning. The story does not tell us that the people involved were not pagans for us to deduce what you concluded. You must base Quranic arguments from explicit verses. There are many explicit verses in the Quran about shirk.

Mushrik means HYPOCRITE, and in QURAAN this word is used for those, who were double faced and tried to trick MUHAMMED(s) by saying they brought IMAAN but in reality they were still KAFIR and unfortunately most mushrik died as KAFIR.

A mushrik is kafir by definition. But kufr is a broader term. There is no similarity between the munafiqeen and mushriks in the Quran. The munafiqeen sometimes sided with the believers and sometimes with the Meccan pagans depending on whom they believed had the upper hand. I fail to see a real Quranic analysis here. Mostly relying on one or two verses usually by implicit reasoning. There are literaly hundreds of verses in the Quran about shirk. We must not be tempted to interpret shirk on how we want it to be but on how its talked about in the Quran and how it has been applied. The Quran tells us to go forth and see the legacy of those who disobeyed the prophets and refused to abandon their gods. The best way to know shirk is to study the religions of the mushriks.
