    Peace

Self gratification or masturbation is a subject that Allah has never touched upon for, it is very personal. Allah does not say things on personal matters, if it involves only you and you alone. Allah has given enough commonsense as to how much you can indulge in it and how soon you need to get off of it! We need not get intoxicated over this topic as matter of islamic principle.

      Peace Tay,

"Spanking your monkey is a natural release". I just love this quote and could not stop laughing. Is that an American slang.

        Peace Mozmahe,

I'm glad you found it funny. We all need to lighten up a bit. D
The origin of the phrase is a mystery to me. Most people here in the US that I encounter seem familiar with it, though.

        Take care,

A long time ago I had to go to the doctor for an infection (epididymitis), which affects the epididymis a gland thing behind the testicles? so I was with my dad and he asked me if I?ve had any wet dreams lately, and I answered (embarrassingly) that no, I?ve never had a wet dream in my life. My dad actually was quiet ?shocked?.
How is someone (especially a young male) supposed to relieve himself? What, do people really expect a teenager to never ejaculate in his teen years and early 20s till he marries? Im sure people here realise how extremely frustrating it is.

            Salaam,

Be comfortable with touching yourself. It is not sinful. The skin is an erotic organ as are your genitals. Do not feel guilt over something that is not wrong. Most, if not all people beat off or play with themselves, and some feel guilt over it and some do not. It's taboo for stupid reasons. Enjoy!

Yeah, just ask the Catholic Church. All jokes aside, suppressing the energies that are so prevalently part of the male design will only lead to trouble.

I remember like 7 years back, I was visiting my bro in Tampa and I happened to catch a news program about the Catholic priesthood. A former priest was being interviewed. He talked about how homosexuality was rampant among priests. He said it was sort of a gay brotherhood, and that those who didn't join the festivities were ostracized, himself included. By his estimates, something like 2/3 (if I recall correctly) of Catholic priests had participated. And this was way back before all the molestation charges.

So, like Joe said, It's taboo for stupid reasons. Enjoy!

              Peace,

                    Peace,

I came across someone stating the Ja-Na-Ba mentioned in the Qur'an has nothing to do with the traditional interpretation...

Please do not take this as "gospel" as I have never verified or studied this claim, as I believe there are more important issues for me to verify. I am only stating this as it might intrigue someone to look it up.

                    Two examples

4103 Fa-itha qadaytumu alssalatafaothkuroo Allaha qiyaman waquAAoodanwaAAala junoobikum fa-itha itma/nantumfaaqeemoo alssalata inna alssalatakanat AAala almu/mineena kitaban mawqootan

When ye pass (Congregational) prayers, celebrate Allah's praises, standing, sitting down, or lying down on your sides; but when ye are free from danger, set up Regular Prayers For such prayers are enjoined on believers at stated times.

443 Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola taqraboo alssalata waantum sukarahatta taAAlamoo ma taqooloona walajunuban illa AAabiree sabeelin hattataghtasiloo wa-in kuntum marda aw AAala safarin awjaa ahadun minkum mina algha-iti aw lamastumualnnisaa falam tajidoo maan fatayammamoo saAAeedantayyiban faimsahoo biwujoohikum waaydeekuminna Allaha kana AAafuwwan ghafooran

O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say,- nor in a state of ceremonial impurity (Except when travelling on the road), until after washing your whole body. If ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. For Allah doth blot out sins and forgive again and again.

The context of 443 could imply a meaning more to do with a mind that is distant or interested in other things as opposed to ceremonial impurity. General meanings in the Quran dictionary are to turn or put aside, cause to turn from or avoid, send any one way, discard, shun, keep away, restrain. Junub, side, side of a person...

Hence, its something that needs to be studied carefully...

                    regards

                        peace ash shuura and all,

i decided to bump this topic up because i've been studying it. it may be a moot point, but i thought it to be related to the validity of our prayers. at this point i'm not sure if an "all or nothing" nullification of prayer is in line with the spirit of the quran, but that's a separate issue. anyway, i've researched the issue of janaba and have found some interesting points that may deserve further discussion.

ash shuura, the definition i found in the dictionary of the holy quran is

janaba to turn or put aside, cause to turn from or avoid, send any one away, discard, lead by side, shun, keep away, restrain.

junb, junub side, side of a person's body, region, flank

junubun stranger, coming from afar, one who is under an obligation to have a bath.

janaba is a verb meaning to make remote and signifies one's remoteness from prayer because of immersion in sexual passion.

another point that it mentions is that it should not be translated as najs, which means polluted, impure, filthy- a technical term meaning "in a state requiring total ablution". "filthy" is, however, the translation given in the PM translation.

so the question is what constitutes a state of janaba? there seems to be some varying opinions. the dictionary says that it arises in case of emission of semen due to sex or poluted nocturn. one source claimed that it is orgasm with or without intercourse, or intercourse without orgasm. as for nocturnal emission, one source claimed it's necessary to bathe, another said it isn't.

now if we take it to mean the above, with the inclusion of wet dreams, then it's pretty simple for men- any emission of semen requires one to take a bath. for women, its a bit more complicated, and of course, me being a woman, this is what i'm really interested in.

one woman stated that she was taking a shower 6 times a day because she kept having discharge. the reply was that not all discharge puts a woman in a state of janaba. only thick viscous discharge, not thin watery discharge- and only if it comes from desire. as for nocturnal orgasms, the general consensus is that a woman does not have to take a bath after an "erotic dream" if she is not wet. same holds for men.

personally i find this all a bit complicated. so what exactly makes us "ceremonially impure"? orgasm or discharge or both? i read that its possible for a woman to have a nocturnal orgasm without lubricating. women also lubricate before climaxing. this creates somewhat of a burden for us because lubricating for women is about as easy as having an erection for men. sometimes we merely have to think about someone we're attracted to, even if not actually thinking about sex itself. this may lead women to feel obliged to either shower several times a day or to refrain from thinking about men. neither one is practical.

a side issue is how to perform the bath. some say that ghusl in the quran implicates bathing everything including the mouth and nose. others say that mouth and nose are not included.

                        any thoughts?

                          Peace bluerose,

I wouldn't get too worked up about all of the technicalities - sexuality is not dirty in and of itself - as I read once "having sex is a family value".

My personal thinking in relation to washing is that you do it when you think it is necessary - there is no formula and becoming entrapped in the details will lead you far away from the general intent of cleanliness.

There is no need to bathe in special ritualistic ways - and there is no need to formulate the specific conditions. Just use common sense.

The real problem is as you realise the "state of 'janaba'". I see nothing in regards to male ejaculation itself - the wash becomes necessary when one has been with a woman as it elaborates later in 56.

There is nothing dirty about semen/sperm - there is no impurity in it.

Similarly there is also nothing inherently dirty about urine either - it surprises many that urine is a sterile liquid with no bacteria etc. In tropical situations for example people are advised to urinate on wounds to irrigate them as it is the most pure liquid to use for this purpose.

Yes it has an odour sometimes which can be disagreeable - but it can sometimes have 'pleasant' odours as in ketonuria or 'maple syrup urine' disease. But odour does not make something impure - lovers of the oriental fruit "Durian" or "Jackfruit" will know how incredibly malodourous that fruit is - and they go on to describe the taste as being 'heavenly'. I've never tried it.

In the same light then - the secretions of a woman are not dirty - and in fact are in the design to keep the area clean and healthy. Like the example in nature - it is stagnation that leads to disease - not a normal flow. It is not dirty - so do not feel encumbered by traditional ignorance.

                          Peace.

                              Peace be upon you,

When you masturbate, at least for males, you lose your vital energy (Ruh) when you ejaculate. As was stated on another thread here, each sperm needs 1) energy to swim to the egg 2) energy to sustain a new human being.

The God tell sus to be chaste for this reason, so that we can preserve our vital energy(ruh). It iw what keeps us healthy physically and spiritually.

I agree with Idolfree1. Balanced chastity leads to that we keep ourselves strong (probably in most ways), and whenever we want to make a baby, we can give good, full energy from our store. We must not only keep check and balance when it come s to economy, but also to our internal energy, aswell as our spirituality!

                                Peace

actually, the theory that masturbation causes us to eventually have less sexual energy is a myth. according to surveys, people who masturbate tend to have more satisfying sex lives. doctors prescribe masturbation as therapy for patients who have certain sexual disorders in order to stimulate sex drive and to help attain orgasm.

Where can I read more abot this survey? I am confident i can point out the error.

                                      peace idolfree,

well i'm about a half-year away from becoming a doctor, so i've learned a lot. although medicine has its limitations, it is evidence based. many things, such as hazardous effects of drugs, cannot ethically be known until a drug has been on the market for a while. but that's not to say that vioxx and celebrex weren't working for what their intended purpose was- inflammation and pain. i also don't think that taking advice from doctors constitutes taking them for gods, as long as you're not using them as religious authorities in addition to God. if everyone had that mentality, no one would be seeking help from anyone. what kind of a world would that be?

also, i was referring to sperm count when i talked about sexual energy. i thought that's what you were referring to. there's no reduction in sperm count due to masturbation is what i was getting at. i don't have the literature on hand, but i'm sure you can criticize it. every scientific study has its weaknesses, but there are many factors that come into play when deciding the standard of care. a scientific study with accurate and reproducible results is definitely a plus. however, doctors must also analyze the cost/benefit analysis etc... just to clarify my point though, i'm not talking about masturbation in a spiritual sense. i'm just pointing out medical evidence.

                                          bluerose and others,

like Idolfree1 said, what was referred to was not sexual desire or sperm count. You can have a good sperm count, but be low in energy. The concept of Energy (Qi in chinese) is not dealt with in allopathy. I'd rather say it is laughed at. Allopathy knows alot of things, but it is usually highly specialized things... and less wholistic, taking the whole body into account.
Just to relate to your example of sperm count, I know a case where allopathy doctors found a situation of very low sperm count and also bad quality sperms, and they claimed there is no cure for this. They were probably correct, since they only knew about their own discipline 'allopathy'. However, this case was successfully treated with plain and simple acupuncture, which just involves lightly putting a few needles on the skin for about 20 minutes a session, 5 times a week, for just a few months. The acupuncture needles stimulated the Energy/Qi through certain points on the skin, and the problem was relieved.

The theories about this Energy/Qi is a subject which up till now is separate from allopathy, but it doesn't have to be! Both types of medicine are treating the same body... but in different ways, with different impact. Unfortunately, allopathy has often a high degree of side effects. Instead of competeing about which type of medicine is best (which is just rediculous and destructive) there should instead be an increased cooperation. Knowledge is universal.. it is not earmarked for anybody.

Another interesting thing I've thought about is that people usually discover medical problems when it is almost way too late. They are unable to discover the more subtle and gentle symptoms, and instead thinks everythings is "normal" until the situation is very bad. We live in such a aworld that we hardly have any connection with our body at all. It has become a piece of meat that we treat like a machine, not something we can feel. The division in physical vs psycological is very unfortunate. We get disconnected from our own bodies, and we will not be able to manage it instinctively. Consequently, our health declines.

                                          Peace!
