    Peace,

Throughout the Quran, one sees that God (and humans mentioned in the Quran) have the letter O attached before their names.

    For example

    God says
    O Moses
    O Abraham
    O Noah
    O Lot
    O Mary
    O Muhammed

What does the letter O in Arabic translate to?

    Thanks

      Peace be upon you,

I have seen that translated as 'YOU', for example

      YOU, you who have faith,....

      YOU Musa....

      etc.

But I am not sure if that is right or wrong, that is just what I have witnessed. I "THINK" it may be right based on my overall understanidng that the message is directed to EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US.

        Peace,

O in arabic translates as "YA' " like in "Ya' ayouha ellatheena a'manou"= "O you who have faith".

I'm currently translating the qur'?n to swedish, and I have chosen to exclude the word O!/y?! from the translation. Instead, it may in some languages sound very polite just adressing a person with his/her name.

"Y?" is just emphasizing this way of adressing someone by name, so that it (i.e. the name) is not confused with something else...like a subject form.

            Peace Mohamed, all,

            Peace,

O in arabic translates as "YA' " like in "Ya' ayouha ellatheena a'manou"= "O
            you who have faith".

Ayyuha (ignorant 3964) or ya ayyuha (magicien 4349) can play the same role than "O"
allahumma is equivalent to O Allah/the God, we call the God for something

"Ya/O" is an article for "nida/" ie for a call, it is used to call

                "O _ _ _ _ "!

It is Allah's calling on one to attention, as he is/they are unmindfully getting entangled in the worldly matters forgetting Allah's Help and Mercy which is very near.

                  Peace be upon you Doctor,

I agree, it is an attention grabber, like saying "YOU THERE! PAY ATTENTION"

Or like someone in my neighborhood might say "YO!"
